Al Jazeera has a feed from the US right now. "There's no congratulation yet on the election..."

You dropped that.

Doesn't Iran have an embassy or something in New York at the UN?

2009-06-15 05:12:49 PM
DamnYankees: Tatsuma: I don't think people should protest at the Iranian embassies unless we know the Regime is going down.

Protesters attacking the Iranian embassy in America would be disastrous for the protesters at home

Not to mention Americans have no causus protestus - stealing an election is a domestic issue for Iranians.

I'd have to disagree. I think it's perfectly appropriate for citizens anywhere to object to the killing of protesters anywhere. We have a right to express moral outrage wherever it happens.

Dire: what_now: IMDWalrus: What on earth do the Decemberists have to do with Iran

When Obama had 60,000 or something people go to his rally in Oregon, the pro-hillary (and anti-sanity) website www.hillaryis44.com said that the only reason those people were there was because there was a Decemberists concert.

It was absolutly ridiculous, because the Decemberists, although fantastic, probably don't have 60,000 fans, let alone that many in the Portland Oregon area.

Actually they have quite a lot more than 60,000 fans, and they are from Portland. I have a bunch of friends in the Portland area, some of which were at the event, not all of which were Obama supporters. Hearing it from the people actually at the event, the reason for the huge turnout was a "perfect storm" combination of Obama supporters, people just there because it was a big "happening," people there mainly for the concert, and the fact that it was the first nice day outside in a while. It was one of those magical times where everything sorta came together and made it more than the sum of its parts.

Having said that, I doubt the band has a big fan base in Iran. Their latest album made it to 14 on the Billboard chart, but that's a U.S. thing. I don't think the U.S. Top 200 Billboard list means anything to the average Irani music fan. They have their own scene there...

Yes, except for the fact that Obama consistently drew big crowds at ALL of his appearances during the campaign, in the US & Europe. Portland wasn't an outlier. And it wasn't only the Hillaryis44 crowd, but FoxNews who ran w/the Decemberists story, too.

whats this i'm hearing about Obama addressing at 5pm EST tonight? its 11 minutes into a non-existent speech. or are all news stations just not reporting it.

Tatsuma: Hiymenator: Dude, there's not Iranian embassy in America.

I thought they had opened a bureau since the Obamam administration arrived on the scene, as reciprocation.

I may be mistaken, but I think it's just an "Iranian Interests Service" in the Pakistan embassy. Either way, I got the gist of your original post on the matter that Americans shouldn't be attacking their embassy and I agree whole-heartedly.

Dude, there's not Iranian embassy in America. They have a desk in the Pakistan embassy though.

There's one up here in Canada, but I'm not sure how many Iranian-Canadians are in Ottawa or willing to drive. On a related note, wonder what the odds are on a Tamil-style highway blockage?

itazurakko: but it had me wondering - surely people are able to call their families, etc on the phone?

They had shut down domestic phone service for a while, IIRC.

Also Tats, I'll protest in front of the Iranian embassy in the US all day except for one detail -- they don't have one.

You do know fascists have laws too. This isn't about "law". If anything, this is about the dictatorship coup in Iran trying to overthrow their own laws that made and the people accepted.

The Bruce Dickinson: Anyone wondering WTF the Basij are...

The Basij is the largest student union in Iran and a volunteer-based Iranian paramilitary force founded by the order of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on November 1979. The Basij are subordinate to, and receive their orders from, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Originally consisting of those males "either too young or old for regular military service," the Basij are perhaps most famous for providing the volunteers that made up the human wave attacks against the Iraqis during the Iran-Iraq War, particularly around Basra. Currently Basij serve as an auxiliary force engaged in activities such as law enforcement, emergency management, the providing of social service, organizing of public religious ceremonies, and more controversially morals policing and the suppresson of dissident gatherings. They have a local organization in almost every city in Iran.

From that, it sounds like the Basiji are similar to the Ordnungspolizei that operated in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. Is that valid, or am I way off base?

In America cable news watches you

CNN isn't coming out of this one smelling like a rose, that's for sure.

None of them are, they're rediscovering the purpose of the Press and realizing they're a tabloid.

They need to loan their servers to Twitter.

it's really REALLY looking bad for CNN. I mean, I kind of expect Fox to lie about shiat. And MSNBC has always been the red headed step child of news organizations. But CNN cut their teeth on reporting events in the middle east. That's like their backyard!

They've gone tabloid. They fell for the trap of "business." Press isn't supposed to be a "business" it's supposed to be information. This is comparable to Churches using their special status to influence elections.

They are using their special status and rights to make money. They are ignoring what the "Press" is and should not benefit from the Amendments built to protect the Press.

No joke. I think it started spiraling down when FOX appeared on the horizon and CNN and the others started to copy their "Newsertainment" tabloid structure. I think current goings-on are definitely a dash of cold water in the face for them.

/LOL yes I just blamed FOX for cheapening the news media.

Tatsuma, would it be a good idea to include a link to 'How-to-set-up-a-proxy' in your introduction ?

Perhaps also useful: HTML anchors

A named anchor inside an HTML document:

<a name="tips">Useful Tips Section</a>
A link to the Useful Tips Section from the same document:

<a href="#tips">
Jump to the Useful Tips Section</a>

Hmm, I guess the pagination would nullify the use though, hosting it as a seperate page/blog post could work, perhaps this even has already been done.

Also, do universities have own proxies? I know mine does, but it requires a login and password, so it's not an option, sadly.

Thanks again for the information/clarification.

A company of redcoats doing volley fire WAS the machine gun emplacement of it's day. The longbow was also a volume effect weapon. It took more men to achieve, but the basic effect was the same.

Revolutionaries have always been, and always will be, at a disadvantage in terms of sheer firepower.

Due to the special climate and high measure of humidity in Rasht which is mostly being accompanied by heavy rains, the people are truly calm and tranquil with peaceful approach toward complexities and controversies.
