The motorcycles cutting through the crowd has an easy solution.

Clothesline is cheap and readily obtainable.

Thanks to Tats

Not to mention Americans have no causus protestus - stealing an election is a domestic issue for Iranians.

what_now: IMDWalrus: What on earth do the Decemberists have to do with Iran

When Obama had 60,000 or something people go to his rally in Oregon, the pro-hillary (and anti-sanity) website www.hillaryis44.com said that the only reason those people were there was because there was a Decemberists concert.

It was absolutly ridiculous, because the Decemberists, although fantastic, probably don't have 60,000 fans, let alone that many in the Portland Oregon area.

Actually they have quite a lot more than 60,000 fans, and they are from Portland. I have a bunch of friends in the Portland area, some of which were at the event, not all of which were Obama supporters. Hearing it from the people actually at the event, the reason for the huge turnout was a "perfect storm" combination of Obama supporters, people just there because it was a big "happening," people there mainly for the concert, and the fact that it was the first nice day outside in a while. It was one of those magical times where everything sorta came together and made it more than the sum of its parts.

Having said that, I doubt the band has a big fan base in Iran. Their latest album made it to 14 on the Billboard chart, but that's a U.S. thing. I don't think the U.S. Top 200 Billboard list means anything to the average Irani music fan. They have their own scene there...

Wow. The video of the Basij firing into that crowd ... this why paramilitary forces loyal only to a portion of the government are bad, people. Venezuela, Iran or Lebanon, doesn't matter. We should be thankful that our forefathers had the insight--and at times bloodshed--to remove such temptations from those in power here.

It would only be fair.
I mean, Reagan and Bush ver1.0 gave money and weapons to the Iraqis in order to kill Iranians. Might as well heap them a few sub machine guns and see if they can't make a ruckus in Iraq to distract us from our crumbling economy.

How the hell would that work out? Dropping containers of M-16s from a C-17 flying low over Tehran? I don't think there's a synonym for Diplomatic Incident grave enough to cover something like that.

Weaver95: netweavr: They are using their special status and rights to make money. They are ignoring what the "Press" is and should not benefit from the Amendments built to protect the Press.

As has been previously mentioned here (and elsewhere) CNN has often traded favorable news coverage to authoritarian regimes in order to gain high level access across the middle east. CNN itself has been reluctant to give the protesters any sort of favorable coverage, that seems true enough. But with so many people wondering why they're lagging behind the story here, CNN might end up being forced to do the right thing despite their corporate reluctance to do so. Even CNN isn't immune to market forces. If they damage their brand name too badly, they'll pay a price for it (literally!).

It's a delicate balancing act, to be sure. For a decent explanation of the concerns and debate over how to cover these kinds of events, yet maintain access to the country by not getting kicked out by the regime, watch the movie "Live from Baghdad".

006andahalf: The hard part about guessing how bad CNN & co are looking is that no-one on this side of the pond or the other really gives a shiat in general to pay lip-service to, let alone analyze what is/isn't coming out. If the shiat really hits the fan to the point where no amount of concealment works, maybe it will come out, but they do manage to crush this in a few days, it might not.

The fact that the protests were shot on has been on NPR already, also BBC. It's out.

Apparently Iran is trying to block INCOMING signals rather than outgoing, which makes sense from a "must keep news of the unrest in the capital from spreading DOMESTICALLY" point of view, but it had me wondering - surely people are able to call their families, etc on the phone?

Makes me wonder if people (Iranian people outside of Iran) have any campaign to call people living in other cities/rural areas...

RECAP OF THE DAY, ACCORDING TO AS

I will sum up what happened in Iran today...
Literally millions were on streets in Tehran today sunday, and also other cities to have a peaceful protest.
As violence started, ppl got shot, snipers were seen near Azadi Sq. some ppl injured and few died.
In Rasht (n also Tehran) ppl said they got calls from authorities, saying they've been wired on phones and listened to.
Tomorrow, tuesday there WILL be another gathering at ValiAsr Sq. 5 PM #iranelection

Been out and about today; not a lot of green out in the streets of Pittsburgh (some, though), but a lot more news services are turned on where I've been.

Try to talk to people, too. Get real people that you know informed and involved. It'll only lead to that much more attention for the issue, get more help where possible.

Anyone wondering WTF the Basij are...

The Basij is the largest student union in Iran and a volunteer-based Iranian paramilitary force founded by the order of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on November 1979. The Basij are subordinate to, and receive their orders from, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Originally consisting of those males "either too young or old for regular military service," the Basij are perhaps most famous for providing the volunteers that made up the human wave attacks against the Iraqis during the Iran-Iraq War, particularly around Basra. Currently Basij serve as an auxiliary force engaged in activities such as law enforcement, emergency management, the providing of social service, organizing of public religious ceremonies, and more controversially morals policing and the suppresson of dissident gatherings. They have a local organization in almost every city in Iran.

Concur.

We went to the Chinese embassy to protest only after they cracked down on Tienanmen. If anyone should protest at the embassies, it's only Iranians who should. We can't let Iran's "leadership" assert that this is the US' fault.
