So people become more knowledgeable as they grow older? Who would have guessed?

I'm just the opposite. I used to be a smart young whipper-snapper in my 20s, but now most days are a blurry haze.

I didn't care much about politics until 9/11. Even then, I didn't care as much until I bought a house.

They'll care when we run out of burrito wrappers and the plants won't grow and it costs $25 for a hand-job at Starbucks.

Considering that mainstream news has mostly become vacuous navel gazing I don't blame them.

2009-06-13 12:16:09 PM
Or, perhaps, older people grew up when the news was somewhat useful and informative, and got used to following it, and stuck with it even as its quality declined to what we call "news" these days. Younger folks? Why would they bother -- the news is crap.

This is extremely troubling since American teenagers are so intimately involved with the the security issues at the Afghani-Pakistani border and Federal Reserve policy.

well, if you have nothing better to do than write angry letters to the editor, chances are you probably read the newspaper too.

I was a new junkie when I was a kid and after I left the house. I always had a subscription to the local paper and watched the news regularly. Over time, the paper morphed into fishwrap and the news morphed into vacuous newsreaders vying for the lowest common denominator through infotainment and artificial controversy. I think even my ten-year-old self would look at what passes for news today and go, "WTF?"

At least they'll know something of where it is and WTF is going on there.

But, of course, they have to care first. You can lead a horse to water, etc., etc., etc.

And sadly, all those old geezers watch Fox News and are uninformed twats.

/Also a major reason why they have such big numbers over the other 3.
//Old people tend to be republican, old people make up the majority of news-watcher... ergo... fox news has a shiatload of ratings.

berylman: Considering that mainstream news has mostly become vacuous navel gazing I don't blame them.

Indeed. I'm in the 18-34 age group and I keep in touch with news via the internet. If anything is to blame for a supposed lack of youth inquiry, look at what passes for TV news.

Still, this whole thing stinks of an AARP reacharound mixed with a little Republican stink: "yeah, the youth got that Obama into office, but they're NOT smart, we are! Now, where's my Palin bumper sticker?"

Probably because CNN has TOT MOM type news broadcasts, Fox is wondering if Barack Obama listens to gangsta rap in the Lincoln Bedroom, and newspapers are dying unless they report on celebrities and what kind of food they are eating.

How can you make an informed decision during an election if you have no idea whats going on around you?

Hey I heard hes gonna give us free stuff.

Or as Nancy pelosi would say....No its free....taxpayers government is paying for it.

jake3988: //Old people tend to be republican, old people make up the majority of news-watcher... ergo... fox news has a shiatload of ratings.

I still say Fox's Infotainment factor is what draws ratings. The channel's a pure joke as far as the news they report and the reek of unprofessionalism, but lots of Liberals watch it apparently so they can yell at their TV during Hannity and O'Reilly. I don't really know of any Conservatives who watch MSNBC or CNN. Maybe some for the latter, but obviously not enough to boost its ratings.

Newspapers are dying because journalists are little better than Fark commentators.

cchris_39: Youth Propoganda Czar?

We already have that, he goes by the title "Drug Czar".

2009-06-13 12:58:45 PM
A parable.

There was a town where the water was very "hard", so hard that if you left home for a few days and returned, the water from the faucets ran brown or black and smelled of rotten eggs. The Silent family installed a Culligan system and used soft water for drinking and dishes and hard water for bathing. The Eks family bought bottled water for drinking and used the hard water for bathing. The Millenial family drank bottled water and never bathed.

The moral: Newspapers suck, but not getting a newspaper is worse.

Of course, according to the article such knowledge is also correlated with college attainment and very few people aged 18-21 have completed their bachelor's degree. The tendency of the young to forego land lines and the good economic sense that makes may also bias the younger sample toward teh s2pid.

2009-06-13 01:06:54 PM
Are we talking about the garbage that passes for news or things that truly matter in the world.

2009-06-13 01:07:30 PM
Maybe they have heard he news, that wasn't on the news.

As long as we have people that can print up fiat money, no freedom you can come up with can't be over turned with their fake money.

Wait, news comes in a non-internet format? Why is this not a trending topic??!!?!?!?!!?

2009-06-13 01:11:51 PM
The government is ignorant to the needs of the people, that sets an example for the people to be ignorant, so the people need to find something they can ignore and what better thing than the so-called news to be totally ignorant of.

2009-06-13 01:16:07 PM
"Considering that mainstream news has mostly become vacuous navel gazing I don't blame them."

That's for sure, CNN resembles Entertainment Tonight more than a news channel. No, I don't give a rat's ass about an ex-president going sky diving or anything that some Brangelina is doing either.

Well the 30,000 or so of them in Afghanistan right now, I would think are intimately involved in the border and the 100,000 or so who lost their homes last year when their family couldn't pay the bills after loosing their jobs and so on have intimate knowledge of the problems at the Fed right now.

Or..

Maybe our whole farking generation has realized that mainstream media is nothing but propaganda to push some sort of agenda. So, we get our news off the Internets. Now we can't answer questions made for the zombies that read newspapers and sit in front of CNN and Fox News all day.

Thought the same thing.

"The poll showed that young people don't know they can be killed at any time by terrorists, bears, or people darker than they, while the elderly knew all these things. Young people polled did not know Iraq had WMDs and Saddam Hussein Hitler Bin Laden was responsible for the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor on 9/11.

Get your news from the internet, not anything on that god forsaken television.

Yeah, that's why every young person I know opposed the Iraq War, while every older person said we had to go to Iraq to get President Bin Laden who had WMDs and was responsible for 9/11. You old folk were absolutely right.
