Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

entropic_existence: So its still up in the air whether this will become a good cat thread or a good evolution thread. Personally I am betting us evo-critters will be overrun by postings of moar kitty pics and antics.

It is actually quite a good article though on the evolution of cats.

even though i'm with ya being in teh evo-crowd,
i'll be putting my money on teh "overrunning. :-)

perhaps some of THE best parts of the article are the
comments, all dozens of them. choice one as case in point:

Lauren in Mountain View at 06:47 PM on 05/22/09

Anyone who shares a house with these fickle creatures knows that cats adopted humans as pets long ago, not the other way around. Our opposable thumbs make us useful for getting the lids off food cans, changing litter pans and making sure the back door is opened in a timely fashion. The human/cat burial you show (Cypress, 9,500 years ago) is an obvious case of human sacrifice, so the cat would not have to go without its accustomed room service in the afterlife. The popular bumper-sticker simply states the truth: "Dogs have [owners,] cats have staff."

also, the comments point to the seemingly out-of-place "dog bias"
of the article's authors, which i noticed as well. *snicker*

glomar at 12:10 PM on 05/26/09
---
Methinks the article's author has a bias against cats. I am alive today because of my cat(s).
I call BS on the article.

and the hilarious:

rightly at 07:17 PM on 06/10/09
---
Bookish nonsense. Everyone who has shared a home with Felinis divinis has learned the Homo sapiens is the adopted species.

Seriously it's a pretty cool clip.
I wonder if what he's doing at :56 could be defined as cat juggling?

That is truly amazing. I've never owned a cat, sadly I'm allergic because I love them. Do any of you guys have cats that do stuff like this?

"The fifth lineage, however, included not only the fifth known subspecies of wildcat-F. s. lybica in the Middle East-but also the hundreds of domestic cats that were sampled, including purebred and mixed-breed felines from the U.S., the U.K. and Japan. In fact, genetically, F. s. lybica wildcats collected in remote deserts of Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia were virtually indistinguishable from domestic cats. That the domestic cats grouped with F. s. lybica alone among wildcats meant that domestic cats arose in a single locale, the Middle East, and not in other places where wildcats are common."

IANA evolutionary biologist, but couldn't this just as easily imply that the Middle East wildcat population descended from cats domesticated elsewhere? Or that they're the key to the only weapon that can stop Evil from destroying all life?

have you thought about getting a cat like a siberian? they are "naturally hypoallergenic" cats! my husband is SO allergic to most cats but not to the siberians!
