Lol, I originally read that as "molestation by female commuters...", and thought that was exactly the reason why men were trying to sneak on the womens only train.

Those Japanese men sure get a lot for one subway token. Man, I buy a token here in Boston, and I get no kind of action.

Between the guys living with their folks well into their 30s, men groping women at every possible turn, and fellas so shy that they have to go to phone bars because they can't look a woman in the eye, it becomes evident why the average Westerner does so damn well with the ladies in Japan.

Um... how about prosecuting the offenders? Take the same people who are watching for men getting in the wrong cars and have them look for gropers. Seems a little more fair than locking up all the women.

OK everyone, what you need to understand is that this is RUSH HOUR in Japan that they're talking about. During rush hour in a Japanese train, over 200 people cram into one tiny car (about 11 per train) every 4 minutes. I tried riding a morning rush hour train once into Tokyo, and I had trouble breathing (I'm over 6 feet tall. Imagine what it was like for the rest.)

Pregnant women and senior citizens who tried to ride these trains could literally die. Also, you can't stop someone from groping you when your arms are pinned to your sides, and you can't identify them when your head is pressed against someone else. Rush hour in Japan is HELL!

Maybe one day with a lot of fighting, men will be able to grope and molest any woman they want to in japan withiut fear of persecution.

The problem is, there are people and hands everywhere and there is no, I repeat, no way to tell who's hands are doing what. Putting 200,000 volts through a complete stranger who hasn't done anything wrong is, how should I say, disturbing to the wa. It really is a situation that is unique to trains, in any other place, molestors would worry about their victims knowing who they were and usually wouldn't risk it.

It's sad, but the women's only cars is the only solution I could think of as well, and they can't even keep that enforced. Everyone in Japan (except for the pervs) are just too nice to really slap someone around for being where they shouldn't be.

I agree that Japan's outpouring of really bizarre sex stuff is directly related to their polite exterior. There is another factor though, Japan is what is called a "guilt" society, where all moral restraints are enforced not in the Judeo-Christian way like here, with an all-seeing Dog, but by other people. Therefore, if you do it when no one is watching, it is just fine, almost no matter what it is. The weird part is, in some circumstances, what people do in public can be considered "private", just because no one wants to know. Reading porn on the trains is one of these things.

Just one complaint about this program. During the morning rush hour, the women only cars better be as packed beyond capacity as the normal cars. I used to ride on the particular JR lines mentioned in the article, and believe me, if the women have breathing room on their cars at 8am, I'd put on a wig and dress to get access.

Or how about do the program the other way--a molesters' only car. Let all the dirty, old men grope each other for a change.

ERrr people have heard of mace, someone tried it in a nightclub recently, and 22 people died of trampling...and there was a door out in the night club...imagine the chaos in an enclosed train car made for 100 people with 200 people in it...half of them would die :(

Regarding slapping in public, that is considered distasteful for Asian culture, and in a crowed subway car often when you are inches away from if not touching another person. Pepper spray is just unthinkable for that situation. (Just thinking about the damage that psycos did by throwing the plastic jug of fuel into the subway car, I don't want to think about it)

When I lived in NYC, the subways would get so crowded that you couldn't help but be squished up against someone. Most people would turn slightly so their crotches weren't grinding against you every time the driver sped up or slammed on the brakes. However, sometimes you'd get the dude who was enjoying it. All it took was an elbow in their ribs or for you to turn slightly so they'd be bumping yer hip instead. Wimpy Jap women!

On the other hand, I do recall riding the train downtown one morning and there was this hottie in his biz suit squished up behind me. I must say that we both enjoyed the ride. You haven't been reading. I and others said that it is impossible for them, or the police, to know who is groping them. There is huge public service information campaign going on now, posters all over every station asking people to please tell station personell if they see anyone chikan'ing, I doubt it is being very successful. On those crowded trains, there is absolutely no way to identify anyone with any action, it's too crowded even to think.
