"After this contract, I'm done," said Zambrano, who is signed through 2012 with a vesting option for 2013. "I'm serious. I don't want to play. I want to help this team, I want to do everything possible to win with this team, but after five years or four years, or whatever I have left on my contract, I just don't want to play.

Well, the Cubs will have won at least two more paper championships in January by then - so he'll have that.

It just goes to show you... show me what you think is the coolest job in the world, and I'll show you some guy that's sick to farking death of it.

Well, if you rtfa, you'll note that he loves his job, but wants to be there to watch his daughters grow up. I can't fault the man for that.

as a Cubs-hater, I have to say....I wholeheartedly support this

He's my age...and if I were in his shoes, having made more money than God with an opportunity to retire in my early 30s and enjoy life without a thought to money and day-to-day living and the struggles we all go through...I would most definitely ponder the same thing

actually, probably EVERY athlete thinks these things...it is refreshing to have an athlete say it out loud.

Oh...and will be great to not watch my Redlegs flail against him 3-4 times a year.

I don't know if pitching is the coolest job in the world, let alone the MLB. Sure, you get paid millions, but every 5th day your arm is sore as hell and needs "treatment". You have to pitch in sweltering heat and have to use a lot of energy to fling the ball 90+ MPH.

If I had to pick, I'd be a DH. Sure, it is a crime against humanity, but I'll be getting paid millions to swing a bat and play no defense. I can surf Fark and go out 3-5 times a night and sometimes run.

Plus, Z has millions. Who wouldn't want to retire in his early 30s?

/please, PLEASE DO NOT RETIRE.
//I bet you Zambrano is prouder of his HR last night than 6 shut out innings.

I'm reading between the lines here.

Well, he'll be 32 or 33. Let's see if he feels the same way when someone is backing up a money truck to his front door to pitch for them for four years.

Yes, but how many times per season do you need to do that? 30-32 plus playoff appearances? I'm not saying it doesn't take its toll, because it most certainly does... but you're also not talking about a 162 game grind.

Still, being a DH would still be the "coolest" job ever in regards to baseball. You get paid millions to swing a bat! And that's it! I'd take that over being a pitcher any day of the week.

I have never seen a gatorade machine what the fark is that? but I would like to try gatorade in a margarita machine..

What about being long relief?

"Hey, we're down by ten runs, just try not to add to the embarassment"

Can do, coach!

As someone else said, if I was making the kind of money he is now I would think about retiring as well. There would always be some kind of baseball related job in broadcasting or with the front office if you wanted it later.

Of course, in 4 or 5 years if he is still doing well (big IF) and teams start throwing ridiculous money at him it will be interesting to see if he has a change of heart.

I expect Zambrano, Ozzie and Hugo Chavez will be in some type of reality show. Book it. Done.

Nicely done, as a Brewers fan I agree. I'll live with the cards winning before the Cubs.

This is good news. My lawn looks terrible from April to September.

A Gatorade machine is this. It's gotten nearly as much press as the team's poor performances.

Dempster broke the Gatorade machine. Zambrano tried to fix it because he was thirsty after all that yelling.

If he is so distraught about missing out on time with his family, shouldn't he retire now, and give back the contract? Family is the most important thing, right Carlos?

Oh, he doesn't miss them THAT much...

The hell with 2012 and 2013, I'd like to trade him away now. Anyone looking for a rental?

2009-06-06 03:36:09 PM
I respect his reasons. I would do the same thing. You don't get that time with your family and friends back. At some point entertaining us like a trained monkey has to take a back seat to his life.

Zambrano is so full of steroids its no wonder he wants to quit asap, I bet his testicles have almost atrophied to nonexistence :(

I think he remembers:

i.cdn.turner.com

and he wants to have two usable arms when he is 40

I would love to be the closer for the Nationals. Make $3-4 million a year for a team that is going to win 60 games, of which you will only appear in 20-30 of them.

Inside knowledge, or wishful thinking?

What this guy needs are 5 or 6 knocked up girlfriends looking for child support so he has to play for another 15 years.

2009-06-06 10:12:42 PM
I'm sure he'll change his mind when he wants more cash and hasn't won a championship with the Cubbies.

I'm happy with the result from Chicago, but there are lots of problems to fix. But I will agree... "USA"
