(Pew Research)   Only three percent of American teenagers do not play video games. That's it, just three measly percent who are not glued to the bright glow of a television screen, letting their brains rot even faster than in a Hulu commercial   (news.yahoo.com ) divider line

sluck604: Necrosis: Been waiting for a video game thread...

After 5 years, I have finally ordered a new computer (i7 920, 6GB RAM, Radeon HD 4870 1GB) and am looking forward to doing some PC gaming again. Back in the old days I enjoyed Command & Conquer (yes, the original), Unreal Tournament, Heroes of Might & Magic II, Worms Armageddon, No One Lives Forever, etc.

What games have I missed in the last few years (I haven't paid any attention to new games) that I should check out? I'd like to get some new games to take advantage of having a decent computer, but getting some games that are a couple years old would be pretty cheap...

p0rtal, l4d, Half life 2. If you want a life stay away from Everquest/world of warcraft and the like.

Other games to play: Postal 2 (truly disturbing but fun), Call of Cthulhu dark corners of the earth, starwars battlefront, savage (although I don't know if its possible to play it anymore), enclave.

This is why, mark my words, in 50 years TV will be a thing of the past.

Much like Old Time Radio is today. Sure there are few stations making new stuff, but not like it was.

50 years from now, once technology has basically made the Holo-deck cheap and affordable, why would anyone watch TV? Except for the odd duck throwback.

No excuse me, I'm gonna go listen to some Jack Benny. See what antics Rochester is up to.

SinisterDexter: Yeah it's realistic, but who wants to spend game time making their character sleep, study, work, eat, or use the can?

I see you've missed the fabulous success of The Sims games. :p

TedNigma: The kids get 2 video game days. Wednesday from after diner; approx 6pm, to an hour before bed approx 9pm. And all day Saturday. 1 hour on 1/2 hour off. Give or take 10 minutes to get to a pausing point. Nothing on our TV except for History and Discovery Channel. They have no electronics in their rooms. We have a computer room with 7 networked machines that can be used for homework, FaceBook, and chatting with family. ONLY family are on their contact lists. Yes, I look.

Not sure if it's to restrictive or not. However they never complain. They can earn extra time with chores though.

Your mileage/house may vary.

p.s. You know you've spent to much time playing games when you look out the window and admire the resolution.

I would place your entire family on suicide watch. Does your prison offer that?

It's been said before but...

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a farking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed-interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of farking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fark you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing farking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, farked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life . . . But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got video games.

Seriously, video games are an awful way to waste your life. Except for all those other ways.

If they are playing video games that means they are not on my lawn.

Which is good.

Fallout 3 is one of the best games to come out in the last few years (and you can play it with max settings on your computer). And I wholeheartedly second Portal as well. Great game. You should get the Orange Box, it's a damn good value for what you get. Oh, and I just picked up Unreal Tournament 3, it's a lot of fun and it looks great.

OMG I had that system!! Magnavox FTW! No one I talk to has ever heard of it, they look at me like I'm stupid and ask are you sure it wasn't an atari. We had lots of games on it, used to love playing it. I've progressed to only playing WoW and other pc games (Loved Spore).

Anastacya: How is the bright glow of a TV screen any different than the bright glow of the Intarwebs?

Seems to me that surfing for porn or even being on Fark (gasp) amounts to about the same thing.

And, I managed to lose weight playing WoW. Suppose I'm an anomaly.

indeed. the fridge, it was so far.
