more or less, yeah. I built an ISP in 1994, which means 15 years ago (just one year shy) I was not only on the net, but was an integral part of it :) A proponent, promoter, all that. And yes, I had been on before that. And then there's the simple examples of usenet, bbses, etc.

You know, it surprises me that it takes something like Fark to make me feel really really young.

wepsi: 47 is the new 42: I have an issue with one of the questions. You ask when we first discovered Fark and make it a required answer, but I don't remember when I first discovered Fark, and there doesn't seem to be a way to say "I can't remember." I could make something up, but that would mean your theses is based on falsehoods and thus invalid.

You can probably remember the year? It can't have been that long ago.

/unless you were drunk

No, I cannot remember the year. It only allows a year since it only allows four characters. I also can't remember how long I lurked before I created an account. I may or may not have been drunk. This is Fark, after all. Also, your response seems like you did not do the work of deciding what questions to ask and the possible responses, which could be considered academic dishonesty.

at80eighty: IonBeam2: It's asinine crap like this that makes me believe that all but classical sciences (physics, chemistry, ect.) should stay out of publicly funded universities. I hope you don't think a graduate thesis on "alts" and a graduatate thesis on, say, gravity waves are on the same level.

do all purists by definition come built with barbed sticks up their ass?

I can see how this can be expanded to psychology study. Fark has a wide user base , it explores how/why people manifest multiple facets of their personality despite relative anonymity - seems like a decent and fairly different subject to take a crack at

Yeah I'm sure this will be expanded into a psychology study. Psychology is mostly bullshiat, so this will fit in nicely. I'm sure someone will get paid a lot of Finland's tax dollars to phrase the results of this study in a way that makes them sound scholarly and proufound, no matter how unsuprising and asinine those results may be.

2009-06-03 03:37:23 PM
Some time ago, in a private email exchange, I accused a TFette of creating a Fark alt strictly for the purpose of studying how others reacted to the character she had developed for that alt. I had thought she was doing it as an exercise for some writing she was doing. She denied it, and pointed out how she would have done it much differently and I believed her.

But it got me to thinking.

What better way to explore how others react to a character than to put that character into place where they would interact with others? And even more importantly, what growth or change could such a character experience in that way before being committed to the page in a story? What marvelous background could I obtain on this character to use later as a story line developed?

First, I developed the kind of character I needed for the story I intended to write. I worked at outlining his personality profile, fleshing out a past for him, and even went so far as to find some pictures online that I could use to stick in his Fark profile. I did this on and off over the course of a couple of months. Eventually I got to a point where I thought I had a convincing character who I knew enough about to be able post confidently on Fark as this person. I printed out a couple of pages of background I had written so as to keep his story straight, and I started to cut and paste some of "his" posts and other TFer's responses when I thought it might be something that would resurface later. Today I have a three ring binder with about 25 pages of material and lots of hand written notes. I have a very complete and very individual character now.

The problem, however, is that I allowed things to get out of hand just a bit. In developing this character's interactions with others, I have allowed the character's personality and judgment to run rampant without being held in check by my own judgment. Additionally, maintaining the completeness of this alternate persona has begun to cut into my time, because now he has email conversations with a few of you, not to mention his busy posting schedule here on Fark. This has resulted in several instances where this alt has really pissed some people off. At the time I thought it was a great character study, but just like Fark is not my personal erotica site, neither should it be my literary laboratory. My freedom and enjoyment of the site should not be at the expense of other's feelings and in retrospect I regret having even started this experiment in the first place. I would like to therefore apologize for my actions and for the actions of my alt, McFifestien

Sincerely,
MickeyD
