Would have helped if they included pictures..jeez.

However after googling, it really does look too much like the H2. And all it has in common with the original Studebaker is the name and future failure. Oh well. Tons of movies are remakes, toys, TV shows, cars are all going remakes now too. Guess they finally ran out of gay sounding names for 'wind' to name new cars.

You decide:

All cars are pretty much clones of each other, anyway.
Altima, Accord, Camry, Civic, Passat.
Ram, Silverado, Tacoma.

2003-02-16 05:32:06 PM
That's pretty bad. But look how suspiciously similar the H2 looks to the 2000 Ford Equator concept:

2003-02-16 05:32:58 PM
... at least Studebaker changed the wheels

2003-02-16 08:08:16 PM
They should release Studebakers that look like the old ones, and Willy's that look like the old ones (think giant ballsy PT Cruiser)

2003-02-16 08:25:20 PM
I don't like ballsy and PT Cruiser in the same sentence.

2003-02-16 08:26:05 PM
Yeah, looks pretty damn close to each other. I know I'd be confused if I saw both on the street.

Though Chrysler did something similar to Daewoo I think. Their Korando SUV concept had a 7-slat grille, just like their Jeeps, so Chrysler sued. The Korando went into production anyway, and you know what they called it?

The Jeep Liberty.

2003-02-16 08:26:10 PM
When the H2 was first going into production,GM prevailed in a suit filed by Chrysler/Jeep saying that the seven slot grill was a ripoff of the Jeep design. Their defense could come back and bite them in the ass.

the real question we need to consider here is: would Fozzie Bear drive it?

/"Wocka! Wocka!"

2003-02-16 08:26:58 PM
Sorry Jwreholz, it takes me too long to type!

2003-02-16 08:28:55 PM
Meh, no big deal. Actually you're sort of supporting my point, kinda. You came up with an angle I totally missed.

2003-02-16 08:29:45 PM
"future" cars suck. I thought they'd fly and have cool junk like turrets. Those things look like they could fire a mean laser beam. There isn't anything quite like the good ole gas guzzling cars of yore ('50s, '60s, '70s).

2003-02-16 08:30:27 PM
How many rectangular boxes on wheels do we need anyway?

2003-02-16 08:30:34 PM
In reality I hope GM is successful. It's bad enough we've got ONE of these ugly-ass things on the road. Do we really need a second that looks almost indistinguishable?

I can see the headline on FARK now. "Ugly-ass SUV born in Indiana. ."

2003-02-16 08:30:43 PM
All farkin' SUVs look the same, and we're about to go to war for their gas. Peachy.

2003-02-16 08:30:45 PM
I'm with Chonny69.
You just can't beat a '68 Camaro or a Hemi Cuda.

Damn you Fark filter!

2003-02-16 08:33:56 PM
The studdy looks like a range rover. And the H2 looks like the Borg Cube...

hey sparky, hate to burst your bubble, but the the CIS study of SUV owners supporting military action in iraq is the exact same proportion of all americans that support military action in iraq. now please go back to playing in the street

You will be assimilated.

2003-02-16 08:37:20 PM
they're both ugly as fvck - probably fun to drive though...

2003-02-16 08:40:49 PM
yea, the ford concept looks like the hummer, but smashes real easy

2003-02-16 08:42:15 PM
Why can't they build more neat little cars like the mini cooper? I'd love to see a new bug eyed sprite!

2003-02-16 08:43:24 PM
I think the front end of the Studebaker looks like a 60's era Jeep Wagoneer. The rest is H2 though.

2003-02-16 08:44:37 PM
Yep, they both look like crap.

2003-02-16 08:45:48 PM
Fozzie Bear unavailable for comment.

wocka wocka!!

2003-02-16 08:50:03 PM
Square, blocky, pug-ugly. Both of em. Close enough for a lawsuit?

Then Mercedes should come out and whack em both for ripping off the venerable Unimog.

The worst part is: the Humvee, ancestor of the H1 and H2, is a military vehicle. Meant for serious offroading. Designed for conditions where there IS no AAA to come pick you up if you have a problem.

These puppies will probably never leave blacktop in their lives.

Kinda like how they Willys became the current bog-standard Jeep Wrangler, became the Grand Cherokee Laredo Special Edition with surround sound CD, fine leather seats, gold trim, etc etc...

...became the Escalade.

2003-02-16 08:51:38 PM
I'll wait for the fuel cell version.

2003-02-16 08:51:55 PM
On an unrelated note, GM discovers that most cars do, in fact, look just like each other.

2003-02-16 08:55:13 PM
Also- Purchase price of a new 1994 Hummer- Approx 50000
Purchase price of 2002 hummer, after trendy yuppies started buying them-100000+

2003-02-16 08:56:25 PM
I feel pity for anyone who drives a 4x4 and actually takes it out off the blacktop and into the woods, or the desert, or mountains, or whatever to do rock-crawling, dune-hopping or trail-running, and gets lumped into the stereotype of "Bah, nobody with a 4x4/SUV ever takes them off-road!". I also pity those who own SUVs and four-wheel-drives (REAL 4x4s, not these little RAV4s and CRVs and etc.) because they don't know what they're missing. Driving around in the dirt is one of the most entertaining ways to kill a weekend, whether it's to get to a favorite camping/fishing/hunting spot off the beaten path, or just to fark around in the mud (yeah like we've got mud out here). I really feel sorry for all those yuppies who'll never know how much fun they're missing. I've had more fun driving over rocks on a trail going less than 5 miles an hour than I ever did blasting down the freeway at 110.

2003-02-16 08:57:55 PM
Hmm, fuel cell powered Humvee-like vehicle.

There's a thought. I know that Toyota got a brain and started offering a hybrid minivan(in an Estima hull), instead of only that puny little Prius.

2003-02-16 09:00:20 PM
Ironically enough, isn't Studebaker the great, great grandfather of AM General? When Studebaker went out of buisness, a part of it remained (partnered with AMC) to manufacture military vehicles called Jeep-Kaiser, this eventually became known as AM General and was eventually taken over by GM.

So in a way, this seems fitting.

How about bringing back the Volkswagen "Thing"? Not sure what the original name was, but I love that bizarre-looking car.

2003-02-16 09:02:49 PM
Oh, and if you think standard production SUVs are good for offroading, I once took a 98 ford explorer through a lousy cornfield, ended up ripping off the sway bar and blowing the transmission. In a CORNFIELD.

2003-02-16 09:04:23 PM
The Prius isn't a bad car for what it is, but it's a little too pokey for New Mexico roads. Now if you up-scaled that powertrain a little and put it in a larger car (say something the size of a Taurus or an Impala) then you'd have something. Say a 3.0L V6 with an electric motor and some batteries under the back seat cushion. It'd be the perfect car for this area, especially for long trips. The electric motor runs the car in the cities, and on the highway the six takes over with the electric motor providing a power boost for passing, kinda like a nitrous system. Ohh yeah, I'm seeing the high-performance potential here already.

Uncoveror: 60/40 is about the national percent of people who support war anyways, so it has nothing to do with SUV drivers. Now 80/20 for large SUVs that is kinda suprising, but really boils down to the fact of the personality of large SUV drivers (feeling indestructible, and that nobody else matters but them). The stories of a few people saying that they supported way because of their SUV will always occur in a large enough sample group. Anyways if we became friends with iraq like the french have we could get oil real cheap. There are plently of ways to get cheaper oil than war, and war won't help much. But anyways I digress

Beemer: There's a guy at work here who has one of those hideous monsters. His license plate says "HUMVW". Thinks he's clever, apparently.

2003-02-16 09:10:16 PM
If you've got a 3.0 L v6, what's the point of being a hybrid?

hint, gasoline engine is only supposed to keep the batteries topped off. That's why the Prius can have such a small engine--would work for a Taurus, too, especially if you're also using regen braking. All mobility is provided by the electric motors on the wheel hubs. That's the part you need to amp up. The system you're envisioning would be good for people that take LONG trips, though--electric in city, gas engine takes direct control on highway. Need a hell of a gearbox, though. And hybrids aren't meant to be high performance, they're meant to be commuter "I spend most of my day in the city anyway, or in bumper to bumper 15-MPH-on-the-freeway" cars.

2003-02-16 09:12:56 PM
Beemer:
The "Thing" was the American name. Pretty much everywhere else, if memory serves me correct, it was called the Safari. However, that name was taken in America.

what is the link to the Avanti homepage, please

Ishidan: I know they're meant to improve fuel economy, but I'm a performance enthusiast. ANd it wouldn't be that complicated. The electric motor would be in-line between the engine and transmission. When inactive the motor would charge the batteries, and when the gas engine shuts down it takes over. Everything from the torque converter back would be pretty standard. The motor of course would also serve double-duty as the starter for the gas engine.

You can go two ways with this tech, the way I'm looking at it. You can go either for fuel economy or more power, or maybe a little of both. Look at multi-valve engines. The OHC motors are generally more efficient because they can move more air right? Well instead of going the fuel-efficient route (same power out of smaller motor) they went the more power route (more power out of same size motor). Hybrid tech is the same story. If I can have a car that gets the same fuel mileage but delivers more performance, that's great. Having the same performance and better mileage is great too. Either way you go with this you can't really lose.

I still want a Baja. Reminds me of an updated version of an El Camino. Which I also want.

I want a Hummer with a gun turret still attached.

2003-02-16 09:25:03 PM
Cleckmoon: Ah, you live on Long Island. That explains the need for a gun turret. The only place where traffic is worse than NY is LA.

2003-02-16 09:25:50 PM
If you want a new el camino, I suggest the new chevy SSR. It looks way better than the subaru baja. Performance is up there with what the old el camino SS's.

I have to laugh every time I see some little-dicked SUV owner shoving nearly a $100 in gas in one of those POS. I can run my sports car for $5.00 a week and run circles around those road slugs in the process. The fun part is that gas prices are expected to top $3.00 a gallon this summer. Muwahahaha! See you at the gas pump -- as I'm driving by! HAAHAHAHAHA!

Who knew you could copyright a cube-shape? I'll be dinged.
