The vehicles aren't manufactured there, but they are completely customized from the tires up by Icelanders.

Also since I'm the submitter of an Iceland thread I am obligated as always to post my Iceland pic gallery for all to enjoy.. (Clickr on Picr for Flickr)

Isn't the soil in Iceland really... scarce and valuable? Wouldn't this hobby be really harmful to an already threatened soil layer?

Well they just don't drive all over the place. More likely they will go over highland roads like Sprengisandur.

Fark the cars; Those are some pretty decent looking lefts reeling at 3:19.

Once you get off the main highway up there, you need one of those. They don't believe in creating roads everywhere, nor properly grading inclines for cars.

Yes, but they're not driving over farmland. There's a lot of unpaved roads leading off the ring road.

Me Neither, but I drive a Bronco:

It could do all that stuff, and run the Baja 1000.

My choice for an anti-zombie daily driver.

They never go for the hard stuff in the movies or books.

Upon further review the 1st video is rather long (and mostly stuck in mud and funny parking moments) with very little Unimog footage & no MANs, but Tatras are pretty cool - it's like 4 wheelin' with something the size of your average fire or garbage truck.

Please accept my reprise: Why go IN the water when you can go ON it? (new window)

Those Unimogs are pretty cool, but monsters. A friend of mine's dad had one and he got it stuck in a field. It took four of our trucks to pull him out.

I like my post apocalyptic vehicles of the Dobbertin variety.....

Or I'll take a Scout II or late 60's Bronco with points and condensor to avoid those pesky EMP's

Meh. The only cool thing about this video is that the Pathfinder has a Safari Snorkel (new window). Those have always impressed me.

Otherwise? Who really cares? The Amphicar went on sale in 1966. Modern trucks can be modified to easily ford a 3' deep stream with no problems. And heaven help you if you try to run up against the MaxiMog (new window)... But they fit very different markets.

My family's business is considering picking up an Aptera for our delivery vehicle (as soon as it's available here, or as soon as we're willing to drive it back from CA)... It will be a year or two, there's so many other things going on right now, but just having it painted with our business logos and driving it around town would serve as a rolling advertisement - likely worth much more than the $40,000 or so it would cost in the long term - especially if we put a surcharge on deliveries. Most of the people we'd be delivering to would be too stoned and/or drunk to bother going and getting food anyway, so I have to imagine that they'd spend $5 to have munchies dropped off at their door.

There's a Virginia safety/emissions sticker on the Ford, and I think there's an old Arlington County tax sticker, too.

No escaping the taxes, even as far away as Iceland.

Yeah, about that thing. How do I say this in a civil tone? You see, I'm not really all that good at being civil sometimes. Well, I'll try, anyway

Ya can't take the mudder farkin' top down, can ya? It ain't no Jeep, unless the mudder farkin' top comes down and the mudder farkin' doors come off. What is the whole point of getting out there in ya gonna be in a farkin' box?

After it was announced that the base was closing in Sept 06 there was a virtual fire sale on cars owned by military folks, because many of them were too old to ship back to the US, and many of the Navy people were given orders for Japan, where it's no longer legal to bring in a US-spec car, even temporarily.
