(NewsOK)   Congratulations on passing your Advanced Placement tests. Unfortunately some of you were sitting at the end of the table, rather than the side of a table. Rules are rules, so you'll have to retake them   (newsok.com) divider line 102

mandatory obedience to pointless rules - another hallmark of an authoritarian society.

seriously - is THIS the kind of country we want to live in?

This has the feel of a zero tolerance policy. Which is to say somebody needs a public flogging for suggesting this is an appropriate response.

We've been there since students with asthma were told to check their emergency inhalers in the office and go see the nurse if they needed to use it. You know, while they're dying.

If I ever have children, there's not a chance in hell they'll be subjected to public school.

No no no, this was just a narrow, long table, not a wide short table. You other guys were at the ends.

What the fark kind of stupid ass rule is that?

My guess is some idiotic feel-good rule meant to prevent cheating?

dj_bigbird: What the fark kind of stupid ass rule is that?

If you are at the ends of the table it makes it easier to cheat. You don't have to turn your head, which makes it more obvious.

Ain't no rule says a dog can't take an AP test.

Do all the students retake the test or only the ones at the ends that passed?

2009-05-29 12:24:23 PM
So the administrators of an Advanced Placement test got the students' placements at the table wrong?

EvilEgg: Do all the students retake the test or only the ones at the ends that passed?

Seems like someone on the end of the table failed and wants a do-over.

According to the article, it has not been decided if they need to re-take the tests. I'm curious about how the issue came up.

Cheating means to deliberately break a rule for your advantage. If they forgot to tell the people on the ends about the rule, then sitting there cannot suggest cheating. Therefore, they did not cheat and should not take the test.

2009-05-29 12:58:55 PM
Nowhere in this article does it confirm that the students passed (or failed) the tests, or even that the tests had already been scored. Being allowed to re-take the tests may, in fact, help out some of the students.

The real penalty should be assessed against the school, though, since the parameters for these types of tests are always spelled out in painstaking detail and it takes a special kind of moron to not be able to follow the instructions. Maybe they had the gym teacher administering the test.

Oh, that was bad of me. My apologies to the gym teachers of the world.

Maybe it was a guidance counselor.

If new tests are ordered in all the subjects a total of 384 students would have to return.

If the mean scores were affected, perhaps the ends justfied the means.

What if I'm in an individual desk? Technically anywhere on there is the end of the table.

Makes me want to go and watch Brazil: "Listen, this old system of yours could be on fire and I couldn't even turn on the kitchen tap without filling out a 27b/6... Bloody paperwork."

/Sorry, I'm a bit of a stickler for paperwork. Where would we be if we didn't follow the correct procedures?

I would hope that a wise person sitting at the end of the table with the richness of their experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a person sitting at the side of a table who hasn't lived that life.

Test validity is test validity. When it's your child that didn't make their 4 or 5 on the test, you'd be reaching at straws, too.

Is that also about the time that wages failed to keep up with the cost of living, forcing everyone into dual income families? How odd.

Why does the school board do somethign smart, and look at the statistics of the test results?

If the mean score has not changed all that much from this year vrs last few years, or this year vrs other school districts in the same area, then keep the results.

If, on the other hand, it does look like the scores are oddly inflated, then for a redo.

Then it's also easier for the students sitting at the ends of the sides (?!) to cheat from the people at the ends. We're going to need a potential cheater map to sort this one out.

Hack of all trades: Test validity is test validity. When it's your child that didn't make their 4 or 5 on the test, you'd be reaching at straws, too.

Er, reaching at what straws? When some kid cheats off of some other kid, they aren't actually taking the correct answers AWAY from them.

Calm down Gina. They are asking them to waive the rule. They probably will allow this.

Of course being reasonable isn't near as much fun.

It's a school board. Have you seen the requirements to be on one? Most places it is just being above 18 and not a felon. No rules on education or skills...just a member of the community.

So they were not placed in the correct spot or they placed themselves in the wrong spots, this is very important in my opinion of if they should have to take the placement tests over.

Has very little to do with cheating. It has to do with maintaining the integrity of the exam, that not one student is given an advantage, whether the advantage comes from a cheat sheet or sitting at the end of a table. Everything down to the last detail (seating position) has to be the same for every one of the test takers. Standardized tests are standardized for a reason.
