Two factors. One, it's not so much the age as the people you didn't have a relationship with but could have. Two, the more practice you have in relationships at a younger age, the better you will be at them later. Granted, you can have a relationship without going all the way, but these days it's a rare serious relationship that doesn't have a significant physical component.

To some extent, it's always been a choice. I've had my share of dates, though none of them ever materialized into relationships. Even if they had, though, I'm pretty sure I'd have tried to avoid sex. I'm not ready to be a dad yet, and if you're not ready to handle the consequences, there's only one foolproof way to not become a parent.

But on the other hand...it's a source of regret for me. Not that I wish I'd done anything when I was younger or with anyone in particular, but I feel like it gives me nothing to offer anyone...well, anyone over the age of 15, basically. (Not that I'd go that young, but you get the point.) A 27-year-old woman isn't going to want to deal with a 27-year-old virgin. A 20-year-old woman is sure to be frustrated by one. Maybe there are some who are patient, but I've always guessed they're in the minority.

People are by nature masturbatory creatures; that is to say that we do what feels good. We indulge ourselves for as much of our waking time as we can afford. We are also extremely social animals. For whatever reasons, most of us seek out the company of others. This is as it should be and to deny yourself these two basic things is not only sad, but unnatural IMHO.
