I've heard it's fairly easy for American guys to get laid in the Down-Underverse, something to do with our accents. Any truth to this rumor?

*booking tickets*
2003-02-13 11:45:21 PM
I've heard similar stories from a few of the Aussies I know, Quick1. Then again, it's easy for pretty much anyone to get laid down there from what I gather. They're pretty slutty (men too, not just women).

So Bruce is driving home one day in his ute from a hard day's work shooting 'roos. He crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge and, much to his surprise, half way over he sees his girlfriend standing at the edge, hundreds of feet over the water below. Jamming on the breaks Bruce stops his truck and jumps out.

"Crikey Sheila! What the bloomin' 'ell are you doing?" he shouts

"Well, Bruce. I just discovered that I'm pregnant. I'm going to top meself"

Bruce stands there dumbstruck for a moment and then replies "You know Sheila, not only are you a great root, but you're a bloody good sport too..."
2003-02-14 12:49:07 AM
You mean all Aussies don't look like her?

Dammit! I already booked my flight.
2003-02-14 04:03:46 AM
She doesn't look Aboriginal.
2003-02-14 04:09:42 AM

No they don't :-P I lived there for 3 years and while some were nice people, some weren't.

I guess it's something to do with their "tall poppy syndrome" culture.

But then, it does not explain away this aspect of having to put people down in order to feel good about themselves. I was there during the Olympics in Sydney and I can safely say that the sports commentators did a whole lot of that.

It is also reflected in the news coz when Leyton Hewett beat someone, he *THRASHED* his opponent 6-4, 7-5.. but when Sampras beat someone 6-1, 6-0, it was reported in a less than enthusiastic "Sampras won the match 6-1, 6-0"

Oh, back to "Sheilas".. people like Megan Gale are the exception :-P (think I'll be flamed by Aussies now) :-P
2003-02-14 04:10:06 AM
What are you guys talking about? You fark the kangaroos too!

Yeah...but YOU farked the UGLY one.
2003-02-14 04:14:25 AM
I think that chick has a penis. I personally wouldn't mind such a girlfriend, but still.

I don't see why anyone would want to appeal to horny guys though. The type that'll go across the globe because they think they'll have more luck getting their socially inept selves laid there would surely be an annoyance soon... but I guess their money is as good as any.
2003-02-14 04:15:08 AM
PSH! She's not that hot by my elevated American standards.
2003-02-14 04:19:58 AM
I think they should have Men At Work do these commercials. I can't think of finer ambassadors to represent Australia...

...except for that Jacko guy maybe. And I'm not talking about Michael Jackson.
2003-02-14 04:21:29 AM
I've been there around the end of 2001. It was great, but your biggest problem more than anything else is convincing someone to spend 3x as much money on a flight during peak, when they could go to Europe or the Carribean for less. I was just going nuts when I thought I could go to England from LA and back, *twice* before it cost me what it took to get to Australia.

Although Australia was worth every penny once I got down there. Sure, there wasn't a Disneyland there. Hell, not even a Universal studios, Fox Studios blew over in Sydney. But that aside, there were other things in Australia, Fraser Island being a stand out to me along with the typical american tourist type thing of hanging out with Kangaroos and Koalas at Lone Pine. My trip up and down the east coast was all that and more and if I had the time and money, I'd do it again.

And yes, our American "accent" does help a little with the ladies. ;)

2003-02-14 04:23:40 AM
Ambassadors? I would think their former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke would be excellent... he went on National TV, drunk as a skunk, telling everyone that the next day was a public holiday. He declared it after the Aussies won the America's Cup :-)

Rumours speak of him once holding the world record in speed drinking of beer :-)
2003-02-14 04:26:02 AM
I heard the Sheilas liked Yankees so much because the majority of Aussie dudes are... shall we say... A-holes?
2003-02-14 04:28:05 AM

thats pretty much every countries problem, altho we love doing it.....

and you were in sydney they are arseholes, melb is the nice place....and so on.
2003-02-14 04:31:03 AM
MAn shes hot. and she is our Tourism ambassador to Italy not the US. cause the italians find her uber sexy supposedly.
2003-02-14 04:31:32 AM
"Every day is Valentine's day for us."

2003-02-14 04:32:05 AM
'Rumours speak of him once holding the world record in speed drinking of beer :-)'

In 1954, he was in the Guinness Book of Records for sculling two and a half pints of beer (no idea what brand) in 10 seconds.

What other country has a Prime Minister that can claim that? :)
2003-02-14 04:33:15 AM
Who gives a rats a-- about Italy?
2003-02-14 04:36:50 AM
2003-02-14 04:37:19 AM

I guess so.. anyway, I was in Melbourne during the Olympics to visit friends and watched the TV reports at nights. I think their attitude is reflected in the cocky and rude manner of Leyton Hewett... I met many of them like that in my 3 years there.

Gotta say Melbourne is nice :-) Sydney's a bit too congested and fast-paced.
2003-02-14 04:39:02 AM
But Italians are stupid in my pompus American opinion.
2003-02-14 04:39:46 AM
Yeah, Australians reporting about Australians....its a disgusting thing to watch.
2003-02-14 04:40:53 AM
Dear Yank allies

If yuo plan to visit Australia on a holiday, remember to tell everyone yuo are a Canadian. You will save yourself some trouble.
A canadian flag on your backpack is a good idea too.
2003-02-14 04:44:34 AM
Inside every dirty foreigner is an American urning to breathe free.
2003-02-14 04:45:05 AM
argh.. thread too thick.. with.. generalisations..

But anyway, yes we're all sluts, we all say "sheila" and "crikey", all americans are worshipped here (we never ever make fun of them.. EVER!), and we're all biased towards our own sportsman unlike the fair and just american media.

No i'm not being sarcastic. Whatever do you mean?

There, did i cover everything? :)

By the way, any italians should know who megan gale is. She's like a demi-god over there or something.
2003-02-14 04:48:04 AM
So why does Lleyton Hewitt hang out with Kim Cliisters?

She must have skills other than tennis - because she is definitely not on the ambassador list...
2003-02-14 04:52:49 AM
Visit Sweden, jaa! Blonde Swedish girl love greasy American penis! Come one, come all!
2003-02-14 04:57:31 AM
I became friends with a few yanks that came to Oz and I would have to say they all do fairly well downunder. But then just about everyone one on the exchange does fairly well, not just the yanks since variety is the spice of life after all :). No it's definitely not the American accent as most Aussies can't stand it. From reports of mates I've heard that an Aussies in America does even better :)

Ahhh the joys of travel.

Mike_from_Accounting I don't have a problem with yanks as individuals at all, but it's virtually impossible to resist giving them crap. All in good fun though.
2003-02-14 04:57:46 AM
Lleyton Hewitt is not well liked as he takes himself way too seriously and doesn't mind telling people how good he is. Look at Pat Rafter, no tall poppy syndrome happening with him. Its all about ego. If you go on about how good or better you think you are, Australian people will be getting in line to cut you down. That includes the tourists. We dont share a border with anyone so we are always intersted in other peoples lifestyles, that's why we travel so much. But start telling people how good you are and behave as if you own the world and you'll think every Australian you meet is an asshole. Be yourself, dont brag and most Australians will like you. You also have to remember we have our fair share of rednecks and assholes as well so dont think we're all like that. Unfortunately culling assholes is illegal.
2003-02-14 04:59:26 AM
Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Tennis... it's really rather sad.
2003-02-14 05:01:13 AM
Well said Tjc. Sums up tall poppy syndrome rather well.
2003-02-14 05:02:07 AM

I attended university there. We've sat there just talking about stuff, no tall poppies and no bragging but people from elsewhere were chopped. Not only by the students but by the lecturers too.

Have to say some lecturers were nice :-) but some were downright horrible pushing Ozz-traa-leea-ahh down the throats of everyone.

It's sad
2003-02-14 05:10:15 AM
I don't have a problem with individual Americans (I *know* only one) but tourists are often stereotyped.

No one hates Canada.

Maybe if the plane tickets to Australia weren't two thousand dollars round trip, more people would go.
2003-02-14 05:17:18 AM
If you haven't been to Australia, then please don't bash it. I've been backpacking around the world and always enjoy comming home to aussie, the lifestyle here is nothing short of fantastic.

Oh and my second fave country is Canada, gotta love em kanucks! (sp?)

2003-02-14 05:21:35 AM
Beear That is rather sad to hear. It's unfortunate that there are still lots of problems with Australians fully accepting people from Asian countries. I studied IT which had around 80% Asian ethnicity and the general impression shared by most Australians was that they, as a majority, don't want to integrate with the local culture despite the many opportunities provided. Sadly things became very group like which only made the situation worse.

I hope that you spent enough time there to find out we joke about everything, most commonly each other. A lot of the time I have found this is taken the wrong way, especially from those of an Asian background who are unfamiliar with our humour. Next time give it back as good as you get it :). But as Tjc said we have our fair share of arseholes.
2003-02-14 05:21:39 AM

Skin_, same experience here, but I can understand why they would naturally group together, if you and I were at Uni together in friggin Greenland or somthing, you would expect the same thing to happen.
2003-02-14 05:33:59 AM
Having just got back from the USA - let me just say.

1. American Women dig aussie men cos a) We have nice accents ? b) We are smarter then Americans (on average)
c) Have more respect for women (or so they think)
d) Are nothing at all what the american media portrays us as.

Additionally, yes. Americans please pretend you are Canadians.
2003-02-14 05:34:39 AM
Calix I know people tend to group with what they know but you think if you were in a foreign country you would want to experience it's culture with the locals. I became good friends with those willing to do that and I think we all became better off for it. I'm in the Netherlands now and I love hanging out with the Dutchies.
2003-02-14 05:39:18 AM
I don't know what your elevated (cough) American standards are but lookie here, may I present to you Megan Gale, laydiis en genllemen!

Another perfect example of hypocrisy in saying Australian media is biased towards their own sportspeople. It happens everywhere. I watched the UK broadcast of the Olypics and it was so frustrating to hear only about the magnificent performance of the Brit when some Aussie had just smeashed a world record. It happens everywhere people.
2003-02-14 05:43:03 AM

These Italians have no taste whatsoever:
2003-02-14 05:44:51 AM
Brisvegas Boy, it even happens locally. Look how proud us QLDanders are whenever anything QLDandish happens (viz State of Origin, etc etc). Come to think of it, I don't know if the southern states are as parochial about their people's *victories* as QLDanders are.
2003-02-14 05:48:22 AM
i dont know what u ladies are complaining about $2000 USD to come to aus. but we pay $1800 AUD to go to the states. whos getting the raw end of the deal now?

How bout this:
Never go there. You won't have to worry about anything. That's my big plan. As a matter of fact, that's about my plan for anyplace from now on. I've been treated like crap in enough countries to last a lifetime.
2003-02-14 06:19:02 AM

Yeah, and unlike Europe, the Aussies are 100% behind the US in a war against Iraq, and any other Western world hating countries.
2003-02-14 06:21:57 AM
Pubeman thats just so that we can get those yanky suckers.. i mean friends to come over and spend money here.

they are so gullible.... i mean nice and friendly
2003-02-14 06:23:53 AM

"i dont know what u ladies are complaining about $2000 USD to come to aus. but we pay $1800 AUD to go to the states... ever thought of buying ur ticket from over here ?"

Nah, it isn't. We tried that when I was dating an American, at one point it was cheaper to buy TWO tickets from Sydney to LAX and use one leg of each ticker than it was to buy one from LAX to Sydney. We called to book, and were told that:

1. You have to book departing tickets from the country being departed from.
2. If you miss the outbound leg, they automatically cancel the return leg.

Sucks !

Americans I've found are ripped off blind in many areas. If you don't go to other countries often you don't realise how much they pay for things, things we would cry like a baby over paying that much for. I guess the idea is that they have enough money to spend, so they can be fleeced that little but more. It sucks.
2003-02-14 06:27:18 AM
Went to oz for 7 laid 15 times....Everybody can get laid easily in that country...well if you stick to hostels and shag the other backpackers that is.
2003-02-14 06:34:07 AM
Pubeman Aussies 100% behind the war on Iraq? First I've heard of that. Actually over 70% of us are against it and we suffer from a government like the brits that thinks they know better than the voters.
2003-02-14 06:35:40 AM

You are cruel *laughs*

We certainly aren't prudish about sex, I believe we are closer to the French and Europe in that respect than most other countries - it's a natural healthy sport so why not enjoy it. Variety indeed is the spice of life.

Americans do really well here if they are nice people. I had an american flatmate who was the most contested over man I've ever seen, he had the broadest accent, loudest voice, was terribly opinionated, and we couldn't get enough of him *lol*.

Anyway, the moral of the story is a wanker at home is still going to be a wanker overseas, and of course we aren't going to like them. Why would we ?
2003-02-14 06:37:34 AM

I think he was being cruel - like the kangaroos delivering the mail story, you know ? Trolling for the gullible ;)
2003-02-14 06:41:31 AM
MorphineKisses: It has been a long time since i was home, but i still remember the parochialism vividly.

It is the same all over the world. What i always loved was, how for ex, in the State of Origin there would be intense rivalry bordering on hate, yet the following week where there was a national side playing the Brits, it would all be put aside. [Unless of course Benny Elias was playing :-) ]

Bugger_all: It has been a long time since i have seen her. Is that Kate Ceberano?
2003-02-14 06:46:58 AM
Just in case he wasn't:

Anti-war protesters clog CBD - February 14, 2003

MELBOURNE's CBD turned into a densely packed massed demonstration against a US-led war on Iraq today with tens of thousands turning up to an evening rally for peace.

Victoria Police estimates placed the crowd numbers at up to 150,000 although the entire length of Swanston Street was filled with people obviously awaiting the demonstration before the head of the protest departed the State Library.

At the march's destination - Federation Square - they were addressed by union and political leaders as well as rock singer and conservationist Peter Garrett.

Touted as the biggest protest in Australia since the anti-Vietnam War marches of 30 years ago, today's evening rally kicked off with mock air raid sirens to symbolise air attacks on Baghdad.

Greens Senator Bob Brown said the size of the crowd showed John Howard did not have a mandate to take Australia to war against Iraq.

"This is a huge statement by the people of Melbourne, and the people of Australia to John Howard: that he's gone the wrong way and should turn around.

"The people of Australia don't see this as our war," Sen Brown said.,4057,5984545%255E1702,00.html

Can't wait for the Sydney one.

Yeah, and unlike Europe, the Aussies are 100% behind the US in a war against Iraq, and any other Western world hating countries

lol where did you pull that fact from? - the vast majority of Aussies are against war and a vote of no confidence was recently passed on their Prime Minister for the role he has committed the Aus army in Iraq.

Vikingskull - wow 7 pathetic attempts to start a flame war and each one totally ignored by everyone - it must hurt to be you

Those people are obviously terrorist.......

why wasnt I informed of this party? hell id go even tho my attitude to the war is "meh"
2003-02-14 07:04:13 AM
Worse than terrorists, the raucous minority. As little Johnie Arthur said recently, (paraphrased)"should we impose sanctions to that kill children, or just bomb them"

Oops I meant "sanctions kill children, let's fark Saddam off and stop the crap and feed everyone"

As a well-traveled and cultured individual who tries his utmost to hold no biases or generalizations, I have to say that it's true: all Australians are sluts (guys and girls). And y'know what? There's absolutely nothing wrong with that :)
Especially since Australia, unlike New Zealand, actually has some good-looking wimmen-folk.
2003-02-14 09:04:38 AM
Megan Gale? Not too shabby. But I prefer redheads.
2003-02-14 09:05:47 AM
Australians are great.

I heart Australia and all who sail in her.

Crap drinkers, though. Aussie pooftahs.
2003-02-14 09:16:14 AM

2003-02-14 09:20:32 AM
I thought all Aussies were like that grinning idiot that used to sell batteries. Used to yell OY!

That and I thought everybody over there had a buddy like Donk.
2003-02-14 09:27:55 AM
Look, as an American who is not quite happy with what is going on with the "Iraq-N. Korea-Rest of the World" thing going on, I could understand why everyone would be terribly upset about it all. I'm not happy.

The rest of the world is a bunch of losers. Period. But let me qualify that: This excludes The UK, Australia, Germany, Ghana, Scandanavia, and Japan. They are the only cultures that are trying to move forward anymore. I love those guys, the rest can sit down and shut up. Yes France... you too can shut the fark up. We're only listening to cultures that matter.

I applaud the peace movement. I believe you. We need peace, and a dissenting opinion in this. But guys, make your point and move on, cause stopping the war ain't going to happen. Please look at history before you holler about it. This guy has propped up his regime and destroyed Iran's far superior war machine with chemical weapons. He has put a country in hell for years of inflation and overspending on him, and then he will try to gas anyone who would likely tear down his regime. They cannot get anything more than food for oil for justified fear that it is all going to weapons programs. No one can touch him. He has chemical weapons, hundreds of bunkers, and lives like Howard Hughes. That is why you need the might of the US to dislodge him. No one else can take what the Iranians had to take to see his first strike a decade ago.

Many of the people can't remember their history properly. He started all of this by international invasion. He coveted another lands resources, and rolled in one afternoon. This should let you know what he feels about the rest of the world... it is simply more land to acquire. For Chrissakes, his own office has three 15+ foot pictures of him in it. When we attacked him in Kuwait? Well then he "Scudded" Israel in the gulf war to try to start WW3, drag Israel into it, and get the love of the Arab world over his land grab. Keep in mind he was attacking Muslims first when he attacked Kuwait. HE TRIED TO START A FULL ON MIDDLE EAST WW3 AGAINST THE US AND ISRAEL TO KEEP HIMSELF IN POWER. He killed Israelis as bargaining chips. This had nothing to do with Israel. He was trying to get Israel to counterattack so that Arabs would get in a Jihad against Israel, so that the Americans would be distracted and balk on him. Only I and the Israelis seem to remember that. This man is a Shiatbag. He started all of this years ago with international invasion... against other Muslims. Something true Muslims are not to EVER DO.

Ya see? All Americans are not insane about taking out this loser. There are reasons. You just may have forgotten them, condsidering that some of you come from (Pardon my Anger) such pussified nations that refused to stop international invasion the last time. However, some of you didn't, so you get all of my love.

I would love peace. But I refuse to live next door to a convicted felon who keeps shooting off his guns, robbing neighbors houses, and threatening us all. His stink is unbearable. I would love peace, but peace is a playground for feral humans like him.

That being said.. keep up the rallies. It gives me hope after all of this mess that people will keep their eye on the prize of peace. It just can't happen right now. Not in this environment. We still have too much mess.

After all is said and done though, I still love ya Brits, Aussies, Germans, and Japanese. I'd kick ass to save ya. Best of luck. Keep the faith something will come out of this. So be cool. Some Americans understand why you're upset... we just see it a different way.

I just want to hear Megan Gale talking Italian in an Aussie accent.

Oz has some of the finest people on earth, men and women. Great to party with anytime.
About all their women looking fantastic- well, if you're not used to their beer, or "decent" strength beer in any case, a few rounds and all their women will look fantastic. And their 'roos, and wombats, and...

Thats nice El_Camino_SS, but what does that have to do with Megan Gale?

If they all looked like Nicole Kidman, then we'd be talking.

Dear septics, all Aussie women are ugly and have funnel web spiders in their coochies.

Please stay away.

Been there.
Its true.

Imagine an American woman, make her physically fit, give her a natural tan, get her to lighten up a bunch, then give her a cute accent.

Met an OZ woman, Margaret, a few years back while she was travelling the world doing nanny gigs for families. Great lay. Too bad she slept with my cousin while visiting Vancouver. Brought back an STD. Packed her bags for her. (*sigh*) I still prefer OZ wine though.

My concern, as a Canadian, is that a boorish American uses national identity theft to get preferred treatment but makes Canadians look bad.

Go Canada!
* And Go Vancouver 2010! *

I spend so much time indoors, that I am happy to be ANYWHERE. (even france)
I am that nice, quite kid that lives next door to the loud mouth football jock. Love me, I am Canadian.

At least Americans and Australians have something in common... we both nearly wiped out the native people that originally inhabited our respective countries. USA and Australia, white partners in genocide.

Heh. I'm from Perth. The italians love her because she looks italian. I live in an inner city suburb (unlike yours, this isn't the ghetto, houses go for half a mill regularly).. used to work at a supermarket there (go coles!) .. half the customers were italian :)

You're 0 for what, tonight? At least you're persistent. :)

Nice try mate, but anyone keeping pace with the situation would know that:

a) Saddam attacked Iran with the backing and at the urging of the USA, after Iran revolted against the US installed government of the Shah, kicked out all the US-owned political leaders, and went fundmentalist muslim on their arses. Including taking over the US embassy. Iran wanted to export the islamic revolution to Iraq by force and kick out the secular government of Saddam. Saddam wanted to expand Iraqs borders so that's all the justification he thought he needed. Pre-emptively attacking a country that seems to threaten you is in vogue today, but he is a monster for doing it back then, huh ?

b) Saddam took over Kuwait from a royal family installed by the British, who had no real right to rule. It was not a democracy. The artifical country of Kuwait was set up to make sure no one country contained too many oil resources in its borders - that's the only reason it is even a seperate country, it was part of Iraq before that. That's why he invaded, he wanted to reunify the countries as he is an Arab unity nut.

The main reason we kicked him out of Kuwait at all is because with Kuwaits oil supplied he, and Iraq, would have controlled too much of the world oil reserves. If it wasn't for that, we would not have cared. At their best, the Kuwaiti government were at the same level as Saudi Arabia, and at that time Saddam wasn't quite the nut he is now. They might actually have been better off under him in hindsight, assuming if things had gone his way he wouldn't be quite the insane person he is today.

c). The invasion of Kuwait was very bloodless, and involved no missiles or much fighting. I know someone that was there at the time. The Iraqi army came in, the rulers, army officers and police force (all of whom were rather corrupt) left - fled. There was no fighting. She said the problems after that came from a vacuum of authority, after the policy fled civil order broke down and the city segmented into barricaded neighbourhood blocs that would take turns posting guards to keep out theives, rapists, and looters.

The huge majority of the rapists and looters were Kuwaiti.

d) Saddam is a muslim in name only. He is a socialist and believes religion has no place in government or as a social power bloc. Saddam attacking or not attacking Muslims is meaningless. He is for Arab unity, not muslim unity.

You line: "I refuse to live next door to a convicted felon who keeps shooting off his guns, robbing neighbors houses, and threatening us all. His stink is unbearable. "

That pretty much sums up how we all feel about Bush right about now.
