I've heard it's fairly easy for American guys to get laid in the Down-Underverse, something to do with our accents. Any truth to this rumor?

*booking tickets*

I've heard similar stories from a few of the Aussies I know, Quick1. Then again, it's easy for pretty much anyone to get laid down there from what I gather. They're pretty slutty (men too, not just women).

So Bruce is driving home one day in his ute from a hard day's work shooting 'roos. He crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge and, much to his surprise, half way over he sees his girlfriend standing at the edge, hundreds of feet over the water below. Jamming on the breaks Bruce stops his truck and jumps out.

"Crikey Sheila! What the bloomin' 'ell are you doing?" he shouts

"Well, Bruce. I just discovered that I'm pregnant. I'm going to top meself"

Bruce stands there dumbstruck for a moment and then replies "You know Sheila, not only are you a great root, but you're a bloody good sport too..."
2003-02-14 12:49:07 AM
You mean all Aussies don't look like her?

Dammit! I already booked my flight.
2003-02-14 04:03:46 AM
She doesn't look Aboriginal.
2003-02-14 04:09:42 AM

No they don't :-P I lived there for 3 years and while some were nice people, some weren't.

I guess it's something to do with their "tall poppy syndrome" culture.

But then, it does not explain away this aspect of having to put people down in order to feel good about themselves. I was there during the Olympics in Sydney and I can safely say that the sports commentators did a whole lot of that.

It is also reflected in the news coz when Leyton Hewett beat someone, he *THRASHED* his opponent 6-4, 7-5.. but when Sampras beat someone 6-1, 6-0, it was reported in a less than enthusiastic "Sampras won the match 6-1, 6-0"

Oh, back to "Sheilas".. people like Megan Gale are the exception :-P (think I'll be flamed by Aussies now) :-P
2003-02-14 04:10:06 AM
What are you guys talking about? You fark the kangaroos too!

Yeah...but YOU farked the UGLY one.
2003-02-14 04:14:25 AM
I think that chick has a penis. I personally wouldn't mind such a girlfriend, but still.

I don't see why anyone would want to appeal to horny guys though. The type that'll go across the globe because they think they'll have more luck getting their socially inept selves laid there would surely be an annoyance soon... but I guess their money is as good as any.
2003-02-14 04:15:08 AM
PSH! She's not that hot by my elevated American standards.
2003-02-14 04:19:58 AM
I think they should have Men At Work do these commercials. I can't think of finer ambassadors to represent Australia...

...except for that Jacko guy maybe. And I'm not talking about Michael Jackson.
2003-02-14 04:21:29 AM
I've been there around the end of 2001. It was great, but your biggest problem more than anything else is convincing someone to spend 3x as much money on a flight during peak, when they could go to Europe or the Carribean for less. I was just going nuts when I thought I could go to England from LA and back, *twice* before it cost me what it took to get to Australia.

Although Australia was worth every penny once I got down there. Sure, there wasn't a Disneyland there. Hell, not even a Universal studios, Fox Studios blew over in Sydney. But that aside, there were other things in Australia, Fraser Island being a stand out to me along with the typical american tourist type thing of hanging out with Kangaroos and Koalas at Lone Pine. My trip up and down the east coast was all that and more and if I had the time and money, I'd do it again.

And yes, our American "accent" does help a little with the ladies. ;)

2003-02-14 04:23:40 AM
Ambassadors? I would think their former Prime Minister, Bob Hawke would be excellent... he went on National TV, drunk as a skunk, telling everyone that the next day was a public holiday. He declared it after the Aussies won the America's Cup :-)

Rumours speak of him once holding the world record in speed drinking of beer :-)
2003-02-14 04:26:02 AM
I heard the Sheilas liked Yankees so much because the majority of Aussie dudes are... shall we say... A-holes?
2003-02-14 04:28:05 AM

thats pretty much every countries problem, altho we love doing it.....

and you were in sydney they are arseholes, melb is the nice place....and so on.
2003-02-14 04:31:03 AM
MAn shes hot. and she is our Tourism ambassador to Italy not the US. cause the italians find her uber sexy supposedly.
2003-02-14 04:31:32 AM
"Every day is Valentine's day for us."

2003-02-14 04:32:05 AM
'Rumours speak of him once holding the world record in speed drinking of beer :-)'

In 1954, he was in the Guinness Book of Records for sculling two and a half pints of beer (no idea what brand) in 10 seconds.

What other country has a Prime Minister that can claim that? :)
2003-02-14 04:33:15 AM
Who gives a rats a-- about Italy?
2003-02-14 04:36:50 AM
2003-02-14 04:37:19 AM

I guess so.. anyway, I was in Melbourne during the Olympics to visit friends and watched the TV reports at nights. I think their attitude is reflected in the cocky and rude manner of Leyton Hewett... I met many of them like that in my 3 years there.

Gotta say Melbourne is nice :-) Sydney's a bit too congested and fast-paced.
2003-02-14 04:39:02 AM
But Italians are stupid in my pompus American opinion.
2003-02-14 04:39:46 AM
Yeah, Australians reporting about Australians....its a disgusting thing to watch.
2003-02-14 04:40:53 AM
Dear Yank allies

If yuo plan to visit Australia on a holiday, remember to tell everyone yuo are a Canadian. You will save yourself some trouble.
A canadian flag on your backpack is a good idea too.
2003-02-14 04:44:34 AM
Inside every dirty foreigner is an American urning to breathe free.
2003-02-14 04:45:05 AM
argh.. thread too thick.. with.. generalisations..

But anyway, yes we're all sluts, we all say "sheila" and "crikey", all americans are worshipped here (we never ever make fun of them.. EVER!), and we're all biased towards our own sportsman unlike the fair and just american media.

No i'm not being sarcastic. Whatever do you mean?

There, did i cover everything? :)

By the way, any italians should know who megan gale is. She's like a demi-god over there or something.
2003-02-14 04:48:04 AM
So why does Lleyton Hewitt hang out with Kim Cliisters?

She must have skills other than tennis - because she is definitely not on the ambassador list...
2003-02-14 04:52:49 AM
Visit Sweden, jaa! Blonde Swedish girl love greasy American penis! Come one, come all!
2003-02-14 04:57:31 AM
I became friends with a few yanks that came to Oz and I would have to say they all do fairly well downunder. But then just about everyone one on the exchange does fairly well, not just the yanks since variety is the spice of life after all :). No it's definitely not the American accent as most Aussies can't stand it. From reports of mates I've heard that an Aussies in America does even better :)

Ahhh the joys of travel.

Mike_from_Accounting I don't have a problem with yanks as individuals at all, but it's virtually impossible to resist giving them crap. All in good fun though.
2003-02-14 04:57:46 AM
Lleyton Hewitt is not well liked as he takes himself way too seriously and doesn't mind telling people how good he is. Look at Pat Rafter, no tall poppy syndrome happening with him. Its all about ego. If you go on about how good or better you think you are, Australian people will be getting in line to cut you down. That includes the tourists. We dont share a border with anyone so we are always intersted in other peoples lifestyles, that's why we travel so much. But start telling people how good you are and behave as if you own the world and you'll think every Australian you meet is an asshole. Be yourself, dont brag and most Australians will like you. You also have to remember we have our fair share of rednecks and assholes as well so dont think we're all like that. Unfortunately culling assholes is illegal.
2003-02-14 04:59:26 AM
Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Tennis... it's really rather sad.
2003-02-14 05:01:13 AM
Well said Tjc. Sums up tall poppy syndrome rather well.
2003-02-14 05:02:07 AM

I attended university there. We've sat there just talking about stuff, no tall poppies and no bragging but people from elsewhere were chopped. Not only by the students but by the lecturers too.

Have to say some lecturers were nice :-) but some were downright horrible pushing Ozz-traa-leea-ahh down the throats of everyone.

It's sad
2003-02-14 05:10:15 AM
I don't have a problem with individual Americans (I *know* only one) but tourists are often stereotyped.

No one hates Canada.

2003-02-14 05:15:13 AM
Maybe if the plane tickets to Australia weren't two thousand dollars round trip, more people would go.
2003-02-14 05:17:18 AM
If you haven't been to Australia, then please don't bash it. I've been backpacking around the world and always enjoy comming home to aussie, the lifestyle here is nothing short of fantastic.

Oh and my second fave country is Canada, gotta love em kanucks! (sp?)
2003-02-14 05:17:57 AM
All previous comments were in good fun. Let me paraphrase a great Beach Boys song.

I've been all around this great big world and I've seen
all kinds of girls. Yeah but I couldn't wait to get
back to The States, back to the cutest girls in the
I wish they all could be not safe...
I wish they all could be not safe...
I wish they all could be not safe for work!

Beear That is rather sad to hear. It's unfortunate that there are still lots of problems with Australians fully accepting people from Asian countries. I studied IT which had around 80% Asian ethnicity and the general impression shared by most Australians was that they, as a majority, don't want to integrate with the local culture despite the many opportunities provided. Sadly things became very group like which only made the situation worse.

I hope that you spent enough time there to find out we joke about everything, most commonly each other. A lot of the time I have found this is taken the wrong way, especially from those of an Asian background who are unfamiliar with our humour. Next time give it back as good as you get it :). But as Tjc said we have our fair share of arseholes.
2003-02-14 05:21:39 AM
Europe=old and busted
Australia=new hottness
2003-02-14 05:29:02 AM
Well if it's not Fiona Apple then I don't give a rats ass
2003-02-14 05:29:36 AM
Skin_, same experience here, but I can understand why they would naturally group together, if you and I were at Uni together in friggin Greenland or somthing, you would expect the same thing to happen.
2003-02-14 05:33:59 AM
Having just got back from the USA - let me just say.

1. American Women dig aussie men cos a) We have nice accents ? b) We are smarter then Americans (on average)
c) Have more respect for women (or so they think)
d) Are nothing at all what the american media portrays us as.

Additionally, yes. Americans please pretend you are Canadians.
2003-02-14 05:34:39 AM
Calix I know people tend to group with what they know but you think if you were in a foreign country you would want to experience it's culture with the locals. I became good friends with those willing to do that and I think we all became better off for it. I'm in the Netherlands now and I love hanging out with the Dutchies.
2003-02-14 05:39:18 AM
I don't know what your elevated (cough) American standards are but lookie here, may I present to you Megan Gale, laydiis en genllemen!

Another perfect example of hypocrisy in saying Australian media is biased towards their own sportspeople. It happens everywhere. I watched the UK broadcast of the Olypics and it was so frustrating to hear only about the magnificent performance of the Brit when some Aussie had just smeashed a world record. It happens everywhere people.
2003-02-14 05:43:03 AM
Another fine Aussie specimen you might be familiar with:

Cough, what a strange cough woman, cough

These Italians have no taste whatsoever:
2003-02-14 05:44:51 AM
Brisvegas Boy, it even happens locally. Look how proud us QLDanders are whenever anything QLDandish happens (viz State of Origin, etc etc). Come to think of it, I don't know if the southern states are as parochial about their people's *victories* as QLDanders are.
2003-02-14 05:48:22 AM
i dont know what u ladies are complaining about $2000 USD to come to aus. but we pay $1800 AUD to go to the states. whos getting the raw end of the deal now?
