This was another of those things he said just so he could get elected, right? Like believing in God and opposing gay marriage?

Because Obama is the one that put them there in the first place...

In a break with some farkers too.

how is this stupid? do we prefer Obama closes Gitmo without a proper plan so everyone can biatch and whine? Gimme a break. The man has been president for only 5 months! it took Bush 7.5 years to fark us up royally and we want Obama to fix everything in 5 months?

Grow up.

2009-05-19 05:35:50 PM
We can't afford to close it, but we can keep it going indefinitely? Ok...

...the Senate's top Democrat said he opposes transferring any Guantanamo prisoners to the United States for their trials or to serve their sentences.

"I can't make it any more clear," Reid said. "We will never allow terrorists to be released in the United States."

Uh...if they're terrorists, surely you can convict them. If you can't, why hold them?

more
change we can believe in?

Will Chairman Obama take one Gitmo fun guy in? Just to show the world they are really just nice guys?

Just think about it, there is the Lincoin Bed room avail?

Democrats: "Yeah, about closing Gitmo, we really can't afford to pay for that now. Did you check with Citigroup?"

If subby read the farking article, he would have seen that it has nothing to do with being ABLE to pay for it, but rather being UNWILLING to pay for it until the plan for transporting the detainees is worked out.

2009-05-19 05:36:56 PM
Holy shiat, where did all of you stupid farks come from?

2009-05-19 05:37:11 PM
FTFA: Explaining the reversal, Durbin said: "The feeling was at this point we were defending the unknown. We were being asked to defend a plan that hasn't been announced. And the administration said, 'Understood. Give us time to put together that plan and we'll come to you in the next appropriations bill.'"

But reading the article only gets in the way of the poo flinging, doesn't it?

2009-05-19 05:37:38 PM
What do you do with a prison full of innocent people?

You can't release them.

2009-05-19 05:37:53 PM
thenateman: This was another of those things he said just so he could get elected, right? Like believing in God and opposing gay marriage?

Did you read the article?
Obama still wants to do it, and congressional Dems say they will do it once there's a clear plan for what to do with the prisoners. It's almost as though he was in fact telling the truth when he said he would close gitmo, but that it's not an easy thing to do, what with it being so spectacularly messed up.

2009-05-19 05:37:54 PM
Nice to see that Obama is open minded and realizes that Bush was right.

Also Obama now agrees with Bush on not rescinding the don't ask, don't tell policy (which should be rescinded)

So what gives Obama. Where is that change we can believe in?

2009-05-19 05:38:14 PM
Funny.

But he's gonna make the cars more fuel efficient!

What a joke.

Concentrate on making pot legal.

2009-05-19 05:38:21 PM
Damn that Obama for not having a rubber stamp Congress on every issue. Doesn't he know how great that is for the country? It's what the founding fathers wanted.

Why does he hate America?

2009-05-19 05:38:23 PM
So until they know where they're going to put them, they're not going to pay to move them?

And that's. . . bad?

I mean, this will probably slow down the closing, which is bad, but this doesn't mean it will never close.

Frankly they should just put them in a high level federal prison. They have plenty of places that could house them. Just NIMBY 'tards and republicans looking for anything at all that can help them win besides new ideas.

Because they'd be pariahs from gitmo. We can't have them out there, running all willy nilly and exposing the US for it's bold-face lies about not using torture.

//our country is now doing the inhuman things we've long accused them of.

This is Fark nobody reads the articals. Or if they do, they submit with the most trollish headline that has nothing to do with the article itself.

He spent years promising to close the facility. Did he never wonder where the prisoners would go? Or if the state-of-the-art facility off U.S. soil is the best place for them.

2009-05-19 05:40:03 PM
Subby fails.

The Democrats are refusing funding UNTIL Obama presents a plan for what to do with the prisoners. Seems to me a good example of how Dems don't march in a lock-step like Republicans tend to do.

/Don't like either party, but I prefer folks who think for themselves

ADX Florence in Colorado already houses terrorists and is built to keep them in.

ohhhh, of course he wants to do it. I want to but I just can't. It is sooo hard for the president of the US to do. No one can do it. ooohhh, but I want to. what is he 10 years old and being told no by mommy?

The only problem Obama has is that he's finding out Bush screwed things up even worse than anyone imagined. Like fixing an old car or house, sometimes the damage is even more severe and more widespread than you thought.

Durbin said that he could support transferring detainees to U.S. prisons. "Our prisons are filled with dangerous people, including terrorists. And not a single one has escaped," he said.

Wait...what?

2009-05-19 05:42:00 PM
So why don't we just put these people on trial?

Isn't that how we do it here in the civilised world? In theory?

2009-05-19 05:42:13 PM
Democrats: "Yeah, about closing Gitmo, we really can't afford to pay for that now. Did you check with Citigroup?", because America's standing in the world just ain't worth it.

Come on Dems....say what you really mean.

2009-05-19 05:42:18 PM
100 Watt Walrus So the Democrats agree with the GOP on this one. Because a few weeks ago it was the GOP stalling the closing of Gitmo on the floor because- we have no where to put them. AND DEMOCRATS cried out. Just close it-it's all Bush's fault. SO now that DEMS agree with GOP's it's OK to stall closing it. I don't understand. Are you liberals in some kind of cult?

Just because Obama promised to close Gitmo doesn't mean he has to do it. Once the Republicans understand this, they will be much better off.

ghare: The only problem Obama has is that he's finding out Bush screwed things up even worse than anyone imagined.

You're absolutely right. There was no way Obama could have known the prisoners would need to go some place else. Bush totally kept that a secret.
