Here, let me push over, you can have a seat with the self employed who can't find work!

tax exemptions for religious organizations under Virginia law include an exemption from paying unemployment taxes.

"I had no idea that there would not be any benefits for me after leaving my job," she said.

Translation: "I don't pay taxes but still want all the benefits."
Good luck with that, Churchy La Femme.

Unemployed: Hi Yeah, I'm here to get an unemployment check for losing my job at the church..

Agent: I don't have a check for you but your pastor did ask me to tell you this.

Mathew 6 19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I've got news for you numbnuts. She did pay her taxes, it's the religious organization that didn't. That's how it works. The civilian employees (non ministerial) have to pay taxes at a regular rate, just like you and I. It is the organization that gets a pass on the unemployment taxes which is a bunch of crap. It is funny that these religious organizations make such a big deal out of helping others, but won't help their own people.

FTFA: The Catholic Diocese of Richmond has a voluntary self-insurance arrangement with the state that allows laid-off workers to file for unemployment. If the claim is accepted, the state bills the diocese for the amount of the benefits collected by the recipient.

calculator13: That headline just made my morning.

Because anyone who works for a religious organization is a bad person, right? And they deserve to suffer?

So if some guy works as a groundskeeper for a church instead of, say, a multinational cooperation, he definitely does not deserve the same safety net for doing the same job for the same reasons and same amount of money, right? Because we wish to punish anyone who works for a religious organization. We're petty bastards like that.

Whatever, this is just the state being trying to save money. It's unfair and shouldn't happen, but states do this kind of thing all the time.

Ah, the 'double edge sword' strikes.

Ignorance of the law is now excuse.....

Not that I find this amusing in anyway it's just that now might be the time to re-think exempting churches from paying taxes and I can't think of a better argument then the one this article exposes....

I worked for a tax exempt non profit, and when I was let go I was able to collect unemployment just fine. Weird.

This is true. He didn't. Because no one was making an argument. Y'all were all like "hurr... hurr... religion bad... hurr... all fake..." like a bunch of sugar infused four year olds.

His point was valid and important, however. The people who have been laid off are fairly innocent in this. And not everyone who works for a religious organization IS religious. The director of programs at my children's after school program (which is at a church) is atheist, for example.

But seriously, go back to your hate fest. Its rather amusing to watch.

2009-05-19 08:38:02 AM
Good thing Bush isn't still president, he would have pushed through a federal overide of state unemployment laws to cover these folks faster than a rich man could get through the eye of a needle (or something like that)

I'm surprised at the hating on the affected people. No, they don't deserve the benefits but they also don't deserve your scorn and ridicule for serving an invisible man in the sky. Well maybe they do for that but not for losing their jobs and being unable to collect unemployment benefits.

No, but if the organization they work for opts out of paying unemployment insurance for them then they shouldn't be able to collect it. Or should my company's rate be increased so that I can work to cover their payments, too?

No Mayah calm down there sonny....or girly... you got it a little bit wrong...
Because anyone who works for a religious organization is a bad person, right? And they deserve to suffer?

unemployment insurance does not work that way. It is an "insurance" that in this case was up to the church to decide if they wanted to pay the taxes/premium for it. they chose not to to save for that apple pie baking contest last june and now the workers can't claim the insurance.

edumecation is wonderful.

Churchy people getting shafted because they were working for a bunch of assholes perpetrating one of the longest-running and most destructive scams in human history?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Mayah: Because anyone who works for a religious organization is a bad person, right? And they deserve to suffer?

I think that perpetuating a myth in a false Godhead that has caused countless deaths, murders, torture, rape and untold human suffering for a millennium does count as kind of "bad".

But hey, that's just me - I'm sure they send lots of condoms bibles and money to people in Africa to make up for their untold crimes against humanity.

That makes it alllllll better.

2009-05-19 08:40:06 AM
Well maybe they should start paying taxes like the rest of us.

Awwwww... too soon.

2009-05-19 08:40:11 AM
Oh, if only there was someplace these poor, displaced people could go for charitable assistance in their hour of need....

Here's an idea: perhaps the church should pony up and take care of their own?...

Oh, wait, I forgot, it is the clergy that took the vow of poverty, not the church. Silly me.

/fark 'em.
