yes, it would. the vast majority of those syndromes are attributed to 'old' sperm or 'old eggs', per the genetics specialist i spoke with. if she's received young donor eggs/sperm, then there is little chance of any issues. she's merely a host, as any surrogate would be. only concern is the strength of her uterus and ability to give birth. but i suppose they'd do a cesarean for precaution anyway.

speculation, as that test is standard for over 35 parents. however, since this was IVF, not IUF, the genetic lab doing it would have screened for that already.

Except she had to get the procedure done in the Ukraine because no one in western Europe would do IVF for a 66 year old. Who knows what kind of tests they do or don't do there?

Fair enough. I would say she is more than likely a surrogate to donated fertilized eggs, that were genetically tested in advance. More so than her own eggs, extracted, fertilized and implanted. But you could be right. Maybe in the Ukraine they use a turkey baster and a mixing bowl.

But the "Down's baby will suck the taxpayer supported insurance industry dry even though she lives in Britain" conclusion is quite a jump.

thus, part about being healthy enough to yield a viable embryo as a sign that her health is far above average - yeah, not so much.

Forget that. The odds are greater that the kids' DNA will be given a good stir by Darwin before being born...a Downs baby is more likely with a mother's advanced age.

That is because the eggs start to go bad after about 35 years. Some how I doubt they used her own eggs. Probably they are from a donor 40 years younger. The kid will probably be just fine genetically. I think it likely the kid will be farked in the head however.

People. Stop posting about Down syndrome and autism. It's not her genetic offspring. She used donor eggs. She is just hosting her human parasite like Ripley in Aliens. There is absolutely no way that child is biologically derived from the 66 year old's own eggs. Among other sins, she's doing a tremendous disservice to women who are delaying childbirth thinking they can get pregnant easily in their 40's. Ain't so.

Most IVF centers require egg donors to be less than 31 yo (in addition to being healthy, nonsmoking, of normal body weight, and with normal infectious and genetic screening). She also probably used donor sperm since she's divorced. There's a small chance she used a donated embryo (or what some lay people call embryo adoption).

The risk of miscarriage and the risk of Down syndrome are related to the age of the egg donor (young), not the recipient (extremely old).

Wrong; as the age of the parents increases, the chances of an autistic child go up significantly. It isn't 1 in 4 (bleh, typoes; it's 3-4 times more likely) but it's enough to be a factor.

I have a seventeen-almost-eighteen year old. I was 21 when I had him and I don't regret it really because when he leaves the nest, I'm still young enough to go out and enjoy my life. I also had the energy then to deal with all the baby and toddler stuff.

My niece, who lives at my mother's house, found out she was pregnant recently cause she was too much of an ditz to pay attention to her birth control. Craziness. I find just the thought of having a baby now exhausting, and I'm only 25; can't imagine wanting to do it at 66.

If I decide I'd like to have a kid, I'm doing it before age ~34 or it isn't gonna happen. If I'm going to reproduce, I'd like to have the energy necessary, be at less risk of complications and still be going strong when my kid achieves adulthood.

/Can see how one might put off having a baby forever though, especially if you want to establish your career and buy a house beforehand.
