It's all that exercise from walking around that small city they call a superstore.

I came to say it's the exercise from walking around trying to figure out where they moved stuff from where it was last week.

I don't have a pedometer, but I reckon I walk at least two miles every time I visit a WalMart. If it weren't so far, I'd go there twice a day and lose two pounds a week.

jaylectricity: It's all that exercise from walking around that small city they call a superstore.

And from walking the 3/4 of a mile across the blistering parking lot to get to the front door.

Plus, if you go there when they're about to have one of their massive one-day sales where you can get a DVD player for $7.99 and a wad of chewed gum, but there's only 4 in the store, you get to take part in the whole "battling the mob" thing. That's a pretty good workout.

Based on the reasoning in TFA, this would be true of any grocery store with competitive prices, not just Wal-Mart. Where I live, both Kroger and Meijer have better produce than Wal-Mart, and pay their employees a whole lot better, with prices only slightly higher than Wal-Mart.

Agree. DNTRFA but my first thought was that the presence of a Wally World gives people the option of buying healthy food and some people will take advantage of that. As opposed to food deserts where convenience store food and fast food are the only options.

Wal*Mart exists for crass, fat, reactionary mouth breathers with zero awareness of anything outside of that which is advertised during American Idol etc.

"But, but... it's cheap".

So are many, many better places. Discover them, it isn't as hard as you think to swim against the tide.

and so once this large group decides to swim against the tide, will you then change positions and be against whatever the former walmart crowd wants, Badass Rebel?

Wow, your a dumbass. Walmart does have fresh fruit and veggies. Pretty much the same foods as any other grocery store, though they are missing a lot of the organic stuff.

2009-05-16 07:19:11 PM
Of course it reduces obesity in the area. All the fat people are inside Wal-Mart.

2009-05-16 07:20:05 PM
I hope their employees are eating healthier as well, because wallmart certainly isn't providing health care to the blue smocks.

But the liberals told me that Wal-Mart was the most evil corporation on the planet!

I might say the same to you. Of course I'm not an impotent little fascist who thinks it's his business to stick his nose into every corner of everyone else's life so I won't. Shop at Whole Foods or your LIG until your face turns blue or your trust fund runs out. Leave the rest of us alone.

Oh yeah, F you hippie.

I guess you missed the part in the article where Walmart's presence in a trading area forces all their competitors to lower their prices. Do you think Kroger and Meijer would be "competitively" priced without a Wallyworld in their market?

On a side note

I loved how when it was pointed out to the union shill from Walmart Watch that having a Walmart in a community lowers prices and slightly reduces obesity he turns it into...Bbbbbbut the workers.

The same potentional workforce where 24,000+ applicants applied for 325 jobs at their local Walmart.

Face it Walmart haters...they have won, time to find another evil empire to rail against.

2009-05-16 07:27:30 PM
From TFA: "We associate Wal-Mart with large women in stretch pants, fat kids sucking down tubs of soda, and morbidly obese men inching down the snack-food aisle in motorized shopping carts."

This pretty much sums it up.

2009-05-16 07:28:34 PM
I've boycotted Walmart on principle for years, but as I was reading this article, I was struck with the uncomfortable realization that I know less about its business practices and effects on the community than I really should if I'm going to speak out against it. Though the article had a pro-Walmart slant to it, I should probably look into this further. That bit at the end about Chicago's politicians forcing a Walmart into a tiny town instead of a poor district of the city that could now be benefitting from its revenue made me kinda squirmy.

Feeling the love from the mouth breathers, don't you people have just the most wonderfully polite ways...

Trust fund - check.
Whole Foods - check.
Fascist - check.
Enraged spelling/grammar mistakes - check.

We're missing some accusations of driving a hybrid, being elitist and having speedos, I think those are the next usual fat people, chin wobbling nonsense.

wow, people bragging about how they willingly spend more money on things they could get for cheaper.

ah, and also a smattering of calling the people who don't have a smug yearning wasting money "mouth breathers"

REFRESHING!

2009-05-16 07:39:13 PM
I finally had to bite the bullet last Halloween and go inside the local WalMart for the first time. It is actually a very nice store, well lit, clean, well organized, decent inventory at a reasonable price, with a sensibly sized parking lot and a noticeable dearth of stretch pants on the patrons or screaming children in the aisles.

Now I'm confused and afraid.

2009-05-16 07:40:10 PM
Love Wal-mart. I hope it put you or your friends out of business.

2009-05-16 07:41:28 PM
Of course they're healthier. They can finally afford soap.

I don't shop at Walmart much.

I get better fruit and veggies at the fruit market.

I get better beef, pork and lamb from the butcher shops near my house.

I get better chicken from the poultry shop.

I get better fish from the fish market.

I get better bread from the bakery.

Soap, laundry soap and similer items are cheaper at Targets.

I buy my beer and wine and whiskey from a really good store by my work.

I don't mind paying a little more for better food and most of the stuff thats the same where ever you buy is cheaper elsewhere near me. If you like walmart then by all means shop there. I personally have better choices where I live.

2009-05-16 07:49:26 PM
If you shop at Wal-Mart, you're part of the problem.

And probably morbidly obese.

That sort of polite?

The $4 prescriptions for generic prescriptions have probably done more to make health care affordable for the average person than anything else I can think of this decade.

The "REASON" is because they pay such shiatty assed wages people can`t afford to buy food! Walmart is thee most worthless place in the world!

walmart has done more to help people than the government ever has

If you mean by outsourcing jobs, lowering wages, using contracted illegal labor and using public assistance as a profit strategy, then they have!

I live in a Community where a 12.00 hr job at the Wal-Mart D.C. is considered a good job. I earn in the mid 50s and people around here consider me "comfortable"

Now having said that; If Wal-Mart is willing to go into the areas that others won't, then I will cheerlead their expansion. Being poor and in the ghetto should not mean that your dietary habits are determined by the QuikE Mart or the lords of Fast Food.l

Well, let's see--people in Walmart areas exercise less and drink more, and a Sam's Cub makes smokes more affordable--but since you get skinnier, it's all hunky-dory?

Yeah, how does selling poor people stuff cheaply that they probably couldn't find anywhere else in their urban blight of a neighborhood help anybody.

2009-05-16 07:56:57 PM
Listerine: wow, people bragging about how they willingly spend more money on things they could get for cheaper.

Not at all. Our tax dollars subsidize Wal-Mart because they don't pay their employees enough to survive. It is also far more costly for us to keep directly funneling money to China. The environmental costs of leasing the big box and leaving it when it's use is done is another externality. It's just a bad idea all around and it is dishonest to just look at the consumer cost of the product.

2009-05-16 07:57:00 PM
Hey, when you're trying to pick up a bunch of different stuff in a hurry, Walmart rocks. Like Saturday we were boozing by the pool, and needed a mini-basketball, daquiri and pina colada mix, beer, Chips and dip, ribs, a cooler, and a new Ipod dock with speakers.

Where else could we get all that in about fifteen minutes? Rock on WalMart.

Outsourcing jobs makes lower prices possible. If Americans would take the lower paying job, it wouldn't get outsourced. the 12.00 at wal mart is a pretty good wage compared to what you would get out of a non walmart sized operation, from personal experience. No fan of public assistance ever, so I can't speak to that, but as mentioned previously, the generic prescriptions plan is also great.
