TFA reads like an AP article:

Thursday, they met and denied his request. Mayor Ricky Steele says Savis doest have the proper paperwork in order. Davis disagrees.
...
"We've only seen a letter" Steele said during the meeting (punctuation? new paragraph? nope...) "What do you need?" (comma? not yours!) Davis asked. "I mean the family will know what the application says, you keep refering to the application but ure (!!! WTF! Really?) not refering to what you need!"
...
If they're satisfied, then, it's up to the local government. (needs more commas)

/sigh

Why there oughta be a law!!! Property value BS.

Bring in the backhoe.

I'd never have told the council to begin with---- they could get the hell off my lawn.

SimplyEdie: I'd never have told the council to begin with---- they could get the hell off my lawn.

Yeah, but it's the FRONT yard - odds are they'd find out anyway when some neighbor called about it. He probably just thought he'd head them off and be proactive about it in hopes of a better reaction.

There's an interesting book "The American Way of Death - Revisited" by Jessica Mitford which deals with some of the regulations (or lack thereof) about burying people in the US. People often think there are far more rules than there actually are, the funeral industry people will insist that you legally must have the body embalmed and in some expensive casket when you really don't need it, etc. Main thing is just burying the body deep enough.

you never really OWN anything in this farking country do you?

//put the dead woman in the back yard FFS!

2009-05-15 12:10:25 PM
Why can't he just bury her under the front porch and not tell anybody, like normal person?

Mayor Ricky Steele says Savis doest have the proper paperwork in order.

ok, so if he fills out the paperwork, then it is ok? or is this phantom paperwork that doesn't really exist?

Uh, dead people don't really care where their rotting corpse is put. Whoops, hit the septic tank!

Looks like the reporter who attended the council meeting transcribed it on their Blackberry, complete with lolspk.

2009-05-15 12:12:33 PM
So, let's see... no laws against it, the guy already got approval from the Health Department, no one protested at the town meeting, and they're still saying no?

Somehow, I doubt the assertion that there's 'nothing personal' behind this.

/Shenanigans.

If someone buries the body of a deceased family member on their property and then sells the property, does the body of the deceased become the property of the new land owners?

/would make an awesome Christmas ornament strung up with lights.

Or maybe they're just bureaucratic farkwads who find it easier to say no than actually give it some consideration.

Take her to the taxidermist and set her up on the porch like an angry bear.

lehmac: you never really OWN anything in this farking country do you?

'Tis true. It's called "fee simple". You never do own your land outright, unless you get lots of dudes with guns, and declare yourself an independent country.

Good luck with that.

Sweet nibblets! I don't think they would disclose that upon their home's resale. This has Pet semetery written all over it.

I'd thing the previous owner would take the head stone, but leave the body. We all know what would happen next.

I don't hate my own freedom.

I hate everybody else's freedom if they don't want to do the same things I do.

It's the American way.

Yeah that's the creepy part. What happens when you move? Or if you die and you have no family, or if your family sells the property? What happens to the body?

Cremation ftw. Rotting corpse in a box ftl.

If there are no laws, then he should just do it.

What are they going to charge him with? Breaking a non-existent law?

j/k. He should be able to use his property as he wants, although it would be nice if he did it in his backyard. But with all the approvals he has, what can you do?

Requiring "proper paperwork" is the government's nice way of making you jump through hoops before they tell you to fark off.

Where does the wife stand on this issue?

2009-05-15 12:24:57 PM
The town council has only the guy's best interests at heart. If he buried her on the property, she'd just show up at night, scaring people and stealing shiat out of the fridge. I've seen it happen time and time again.

There are a lot of good reasons why we have CEMETERIES. What if everybody decided to bury Mom in the back?

Anybody care to place bets on how long it takes the neighborhood dogs to start digging????

Long as he doesn't mind when he sells it and the next owner digs it out of the ground and chucks it in a dumpster.

Sadly that is the truth. The last state where you could get an allodial title was Nevada and they stopped it back in 2005.
