Using a dead guy to sell stuff has been around for a little less than 2000 years. What's the big deal?

FTFA: The email promo showed a picture of Richardson with a message urging skiers to wear protective headgear on the slopes to prevent further tragedies.

What was the message? "Don't get Bonowned"?

Too soon permaybehaps?

Gotta love the business owners playing the PSA card for their foundational reasoning behind this line of marketing.

god forbid that her death be used in an effort to prevent others from suffering a similar fate.

She's the least famous of the three major celebrity skiing deaths in the past decade. But she was married to Rob Roy, who will kick your ass now.

Volvo got in trouble for using princess Diana in a commercial saying "If she were in a Volvo, she'd still be alive".
I thought it was funny.

I think that was a "rogue" spec ad that leaked from the agency--never had any Volvo involvement in it. Besides, not much on earth is safer than an S-Class Mercedes (including any Volvo), so it would have been a stretch at best.

In a PSA with the permission of her next-of-kin, yes. In an advertisement for a product (presumably) without permission, no.

yeah but they're not talking about legal likeness issues, they are talking about "insensitivity" and not "stay[ing] classy". i don't see anything disgusting in reminding the buying public of the dangers inherent in skiing by citing current events.

-Take the person you love most
-have them die unexpectedly in a rare & tragic accident
-Watch as someone puts that loved one's picture up on their ads less than two months after it happened so they can profit, and just pay no mind to it whenever you see the ad.

Yeah, what's the big deal?

it's not like they are selling dented natasha richardson bobbleheads. they are selling tools that would have prevented her death and will hopefully prevent further deaths.

The key word in your argument is "selling". If they had booths at the top of the ski slopes all across the world and were giving helmets away to helmetless skiers then I'd buy your assertion that this is an act of humanitarianism. They are attempting to cash in on a tragic death of a celebrity. If this were my loved one being cashed in on the lawsuits would already be filed.

And not only is it bad taste, it's bad business, as this ad has probably pissed off far more people than it's convinced to buy their product.

"cashing in on the thragic death of a celebrity" would be more along the lines of the bobblehead. these people are using heightened awareness to sell safety equipment. it just doesn't seem nefarious to me.

I'd be so pissed I'd grab a pair of skis, head down to their headquarters, slap those skies on someone, drag them to a mountain, and hurl them off and see what happens.

2/ Get $10m of free, worldwide publicity
3/ Spend all the profit

Either you are prize student at some intrawebs trolling training course or you have no experience in the real business world. Either way, I am hopeful your perspective on this is safely secured in the minority of the population.

i would think that Rob Roy and fam would want others to purchase saftey equipment to prevent tragedies in their families

Are you referring to The Coup's album cover that depicted the Twin Towers blowing up? If so, that cover never saw the light of day. It was due to be released very shortly after 9/11, and the label pulled it.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you take that advertisement down now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you

I doubt it would be even remotely effective though. I suspect most people would be completely turned off by the fact that they used her image without permission, and would, if anything, avoid that retailer.
