it would be nice if the gov't issued some sort of literature with this info, and give us the info when it happens. this is what been released this is how you deal with it, to increase your odds

Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt.

2003-02-12 02:37:26 PM
Besides. Giving out the information AFTER the attack would do no good: it's already in the air, and it takes time to gather protective equipment and put it in place. A bit late to do any good, non? Be like buying a condom AFTER you found out the person you boinked last night had a VD...

Kansas is screwed in the event of a nuclear attack. Specifically, Wichita. Wichita is the nation's leading aerospace city, cranking out more commercial and military planes than anywhere else in the nation. Until a decade or so ago it was #3 on Russia's list of places to nuke should the hammer go down, DC being #1 and NYC being #2. With McConnel Air Force Base just south of the city, Wichita has massive nuclear capabilities. To level Wichita would be a severe blow to America's air force.

So, Wheaty. A small town in Kansas is the last place you want to be in the event of a major "end of the world" situation. Have a nice day. =)

We have it all wrong, there should be missles put on regular sized vehicles to protect us from all the Hummer drivers that think they own both lanes of the road

Plastic and duct tape isn't going to do jack against radiation. My only hope is if I'm going to be nuked that I'm close enough to ground zero to be made into instant pixie dust. I'd rather croak instantaneously than to die as a big pile of open sores.

2003-02-12 02:44:43 PM
i don't mean to scare you Jeep! this has been on the news in the papers here in connecticut. even though people aren't really running out and getting the duct tape and plastic around here. it was in the paper this morning that washington hardware stores are getting some people buying the stuff.

2003-02-12 02:45:53 PM
Lead and charcoal is the only way to go against Radiation!

2003-02-12 02:48:15 PM
Then again, if you can't duct it, fuct it! It's too broke to fix!

I want to know what they're hiding up there.

Nuclear Weapon Target Map for North Dakota

2003-02-12 02:49:10 PM
Duct tape fixes anything, including chemical warfare

By the way, I recommend not only wearing a tin-foil hat, but also wrapping yourself entirely in plastic wrap. This way you are safe from mind-control and terrorists.

Since we're on Orange Alert, does that mean a big white weather ballon is going to chase me down?

(Sits back and sees how many people, if any, get that reference)

TrappedInBumpkinville,

Much as I wish I was still surrounded by ICBMs and B-1 bombers, all the nukes around Grand Forks are long gone and many of the nukes around Minot as well. That pesky START treaty did us in.

But we still have enough to finish off Canada in a weekend, so they better not start anything.

i didn't mean if you at the epicenter Ishidan. in my case if they dropped a dirty bomb on new york with prevailing winds ct could be in line for fallout. same with bio weapons. that could happen anywhere in the u.s. if it happened in one area people in surrounding areas might have a chance if they know whats been released and had something to refer to about the behavior of certain chemicals and bios. because some things will not be instaneous in all cases. if i'm not dead in the first of it, i want to know what coming and how to best deal with it. and yes if you're going to be prepared it would be prudent to have the supplies on hand. i'm saying in order to be better prepared they should give us more info to go with the token gesture of getting supplies, plastic and duct tape to make it most effective.

I grew up about 35 miles from Omaha/Bellevue.

Great. We've had no such talk of panic & preparation here. I, however, just bought tons of poly painters tarps and masking tape. I'm getting ready to paint a car.

With the new rat out your neighbor policy, I guess I get to be on one of those nifty FBI lists now too.

Big deal, They had SAM sites arounf all the plants in my hometown of Oak Ridge, TN 30 years ago. Tested the air raid sirens every day at 5, too.

My God...I'm surrounded by idiots. The last time an attack happened, everyone whined and complained about how there was no warning and the government should have known something was up etc etc... Now, the gov't has started saying, 'hey folks, we're getting a lot of chatter from terrorists just like before 9/11, be on the lookout for suspicious activities, report any you might see and be prepared for anything...' and what do people do? Whine and complain.

So what do we have? Right after 9-11 'the government should have done something to warn us' and a year and a half later? 'the government is trying to scare us with all these warnings'.

Those missiles are pretty accurate, they don't just have them to knock out jumbo jets, they can take out a crop-duster or kit plane as well. ps- that's what people should be worried about, the bit airliners are more secure. Just about any achmed or omar could put together a kit plane, load it with a chemical or biological agent and start spreading it from the air. Judging by the asinine comments I see on Fark everyday, such a plane could fly over any city with a banner in arabic reading 'death to america' flying off of the back and spraying white-powder everywhere and none of you ninnies would even bother to call the cops.

Instead of griping about the warnings and alerts etc...do what they say...be prepared for anything (good rule of thumb for life in general) and report suspicious activity to the police. What is so freaking hard about that?!?! Seriously...you guys...

Orange Alert? Number Six has escaped! Quick, somebody get that tiny butler!

I live about ten miles away from the Nucular Plant in Covert MI. Time to follow that advisory put out by True Value and buy some plastic sheets and duct tape.
p.s. Larsoncc, put me on your Michigan Fark Militia list, please.

The news was saying that people get all freaked out when the threat level is increased. But does anyone really start getting scared? I mean, until they can say, hey, don't go here on this day at this time because it's going to be bombed, i just go about my day as usual.

2003-02-12 03:32:15 PM
I only get freaked out when they start pulling out the bridge layers.

UrinalPooper My God...I'm surrounded by idiots. The last time an attack happened, everyone whined and complained about how there was no warning and the government should have known something was up etc etc...
Everyone wondered why the government seemed to know nothing about 9/11 and why they seemed to have done nothing to stop it. In contrast, now the American government issues eeeeeeendleeeeesssss, and painfully vague terrorist warnings so if one ever does happen again they can at least say 'told you so.'
Remember after 9/11 when the FBI issued a statement every week for months saying there would definitely be another attack that week....every...week. It's scary but, you'd know how many people through the god awful midwest sat for hours watching cnn and polishing their handguns, all the while praising the tactical genious of that bush fellar. And the electoral college has ensured that your voting power is a ratio inversely proportional to how many of your cousins are married to each other.

2003-02-12 03:54:10 PM
LOL! TrappedInBumpkinville i doubt you'd be called are terroist for being prepared with tarp and duct tape for painting or otherwise!
i for one couldn't believe they didn't secure crop dusters right away after the last attack.
it's great they're warning us about this one. i just think a lot of people might die needlessly is theres not enough info. for instance if you have 3 days supply of of food and water and a bio agent has been released that lasts for 5 days or two weeks, people aren't going to know this and be forced to come out of their sealed areas before the stuff has disapated.
i for one am not panicking nor i have gone out and gotten plastic or duct tape. but i do think this is worthy of discussion.

No, I think the complaints were that the gov't had warnings and didn't stop the attacks.

same here: it matters not what they say - are they actually gonna prevent anything?

If you could point out where the gov't has prevented attacks since 9/11, i'd be most appreciative, and your argument might have a point.

Dausmatrix:In contrast, now the American government issues eeeeeeendleeeeesssss, and painfully vague terrorist warnings so if one ever does happen again they can at least say 'told you so.'

Thats a great point. If I wasn't so damn jaded about the "goverment warnings" perhaps I would have a better idea of what the threat was. Of course I am worried; hell, I live in New York City. But I am smart enough to see that CNN is posting the same old photos of the national guard that they posted a year ago with caption like: "National guardsman guarding the Golden Gate Bridge Friday" No wonder I am skeptical. And some idiot in the government is the one that started that whole tape up yer windows and Jesus will protect you crap. Add a little Connie Chung into the mix telling everyone that they'd better wear a gas mask to work (because Connie Chung KNOWS)....I mean really.

True irony. According to the history I was taught, the CIA helped smuggle Stinger missiles into the Afghan rebels that were fighting the Russians.

Now we're using Stinger missiles to protect D.C. from that same bunch of Afghans.

I say all the DC farkers who need a Surface to Air Missle Deployment celebratory drink meet up at the Toledo Lounge on a Monday.

Will you buy me beer?

Wicked Wanda, the Afghan rebels that we helped smuggled Stinger missiles to were the same Afghans that fought by our sides as we liberated Afghanistan from the Taliban thugocracy.

Most of the Taliban ruling elite in Afghanistan were Saudi Arabain, Jordanian, Yemeni, et cetera, rich young thugs who had lots of guns and money. They weren't have-nots, they were millionaire's kids who liked to rape and kill. Now they are mostly dead. (grin.)

And Stinger missiles -- old and busted.
THAD (Theatre Air Defense) -- new hotness.

2003-02-12 04:14:36 PM
Dogfather_jr Truth is, these people are all about making statements. They probably could have killed a LOT more people with those two planes than they did, but they wanted to attack symbols of the U.S.

This is an interesting point you make and one worthy of more discussion. For a long time I couldn't figure out why they didn't just clip a wing off on one of the towers while heading north to south above Manhattan. God, the carnage would have been much, much worse.

But you're right, they wanted to hit a symbol, and there are plenty of symbols left to target. Everything we love and cherish as symbols of America, from the Golden Gate bridge on the left coast to the causeway in the Florida Keys, could be their next targets. Think what downtown St. Louis would look like with the Gateway Arch laying across it. Or the Memphis-Arkansas bridge collapsed in rubble.

Does anybody recall an article written to the effect that the problem with stopping terrorist attacks is that without the actual attack, no one believes anything was done?

Frazetta_chick: I stand corrected.

Still, Stingers here, Stingers there, it's kind of ironic.

True, Wicked Wanda. If you weren't a girl, I'd kiss you for being so nice.

Maybe I'll kiss you anyway just to watch all the guy farkers break into a heavy sweat...

I want peace and lots of it so I can get back to complaining about tax laws and drug laws. War sucks.

Maybe so.

I'll give them credit when they have arrests, or good proof there was a possibility of an attack.

this "they were gonna kill you all but we yelled and made them stop" crap ain't gonna convince me.
