"We were very surprised, but quickly realized it couldn't be a big oil find," company spokeswoman Margareta Jonsson told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Because big oil finds are rare at a depth of 6 feet?

I think the article would be better titled "Swedish Morons find way to get tax complaints in print".

"Which was just as well because the state would probably have taken care of any yield in the form of taxes."

makes you understand why Sweden never does or produces anything worthy of notice.

"Swedes pay some of the highest taxes in the world, with income taxes ranging between 30 and 60 percent."

Um do you guys even vote for your government, or is your country still being governed by the Crown ? Man, no wonder you only gave the world Swedish meatballs and Ski Bunnies, you have no money for anything else.

BORK BORK BORK !

It was only 130 gallons. That is a pretty small tank. Who the h3ll would store 130 gallons of crude oil in the ground and forget about it? WTF?!?!?! Why is is there to begin with!!?? That is the bigger mystery here.

30-60% in taxes, huh? You just have to love Socialism.

And, Sweden did give us the Saab, for whatever that's worth.

2003-02-12 12:55:52 PM
Have any FARKERS really calculated their own taxes? When you do, conisder: Fed Tax, State Tax, property tax, personal proepty tax, Gas Tax, The beloved Liquor Tax, hotel room taxes, Smoking Tax, Sales Tax and then the governmental "fees" ie taxes for permits/registrations etc.. etc.. etc... etc... We hit real close to that figure too folks.

2003-02-12 12:56:22 PM
And, Sweden did give us the Saab, for whatever that's worth.

Every one I know who has owned a Saab has said the same thing: "you get used to it." Quirks like ignition near the emergency brake, inability to start in cold weather (some Volvos have the same problem, what is it with Swedish cars?), etc. They're like the automotive equivalent of a Harley-Davidson, weekends are made for fixing them.

2003-02-12 01:05:57 PM
I know one reason for high Swedish taxes is the government provides healthcare for all. Maybe they get govenment provided handjobs too or something. You get what you pay for!!!

SHASTA WHITE!!!

2003-02-12 01:12:34 PM
dont forget the swedes also gave us a bikini team

Can you imagine NOT wanting to strike oil because it wouldn't be worth it?

In last year's election the social democrats won again..

They also failed to keep the promises they ran their campaigns on, again..

Right, I'm gonna vote extreme-center in 2006!

60% tax rate?

Mamma mia!

Money Money Money ....

2003-02-12 01:28:27 PM
I would gladly pay 30-60% taxes to have the services and quality of life they have. And they aren't warmongering hoolands to boot.

2003-02-12 01:30:37 PM
Scandinavians pay very high taxes, but they also have a very different outlook on life than Americans do. For the most part the taxes fgo to provide for those who are less fortunate. When you get old, you don't have to worry about not being able to fend for yourself. denmark and Sweden have much higher standrads of living than the U.S. does.
I wouldn't mind paying the high taxes if the money went to the right places.

That being said, I would take the geothermal heat over the oil any day. Do you see the kid of chicks that live in Iceland?

Hey, Saab's rule. Especially the old 900. Amazing for a front weel drive car, it handled better than BMW 320's. (at the time, the current Saabs are boring, Opel carriges and Chrysler engines, what's up with that?)

Suburban Cowboy,

They have a higher standard of living is by that you mean more concentrated pee smell on the streets.

Seriously though, in every category (other than vacation), typical Americans are better off:
-Quality of housing
-Disposable income
-Healthcare
-Crime
-Better education
-Greater opportunity for class mobility
....

Unlike the US, Sweden (can't say for other Scandinavian countries) have a vigorous democracy, marked high voter turnout and parties that actually take different positions on things like high taxes and "the welfare state."

2003-02-12 02:12:44 PM
30-60% is kinda low, IF it's a 'flat tax' (aka you earn an income and we tax it once and nothing else is taxed). In America, 30% is lowball, even for the 10% tax bracket.

Starting with your paycheck:
1. Fed tax
2. FICA
3. State tax (if you have one)
4. Local tax
5. Unemployment
6. 'Privilege' tax (aka Occupation tax)

Plus:
7. Your employer's share of fed
8. FICA
9. State (I think?)
10. You could probably throw benefits in here too, if calling health care a tax isn't too much of a stretch

And that's BEFORE you even get to spend it.

11. Sales tax
12. Luxury tax
13. 'Sin' tax (cigs, alcohol, etc)
14. Gas tax (fed AND state, and tack on some more for diesel if you run one)

I'm probably leaving quite a few out, but realistically, Americans, per dollar, pay quite a bit of tax (I've seen some statistics that put it in the 80% range).

That being said, them swedes are pretty damn stupid for not being able to find a large metal cylinder with ground sonar or whatever they use nowadays before drilling.

Norway isn't the third largest oil producing country. According to the energy information administration they're #6. That's not bad, but they produce roughly half of what the third largest producer does (Russia). They are the third largest oil exporters though according to this site: http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/nonopec.html

Sweden is a cool place to live. BFD about taxes.

2003-02-12 11:42:32 PM
Yea, they have high taxes, they also have a better quality-of-life than people in the US. Money isn't everything.
