Jeesh, can we get over the whole macho bullshiat of men doing "women's" work? If a woman can drop bombs on a village from thirty thousand feet, a man can take of children. It's the 21st Century, for crying out loud.

The recession is causing this? Geez, I must be living in a city that's in a constant recession. And my dad must work around a bunch of poor men.

I've always heard it as a man's purse, but I suppose it could be a male or man nurse, too.

What I've noticed is that male nurses tend to relatively quickly move into administrative roles which is likely a better career path than most.

I've been a stay-at-home-dad/freshman composition teacher for about a year and a half now, while I finished my MA.

And now my wife's been living with her mom for 5 weeks, so, lemme tell ya, they get tired of that stuff.

Male Nurses have existed for decades subby. Nurses are in demand. It is a recession proof occupation. Nurses can make dam good money too. They also have Nurse Practitioners which are almost doctors.

Me, too.

One of my buddies stays at home with his son and helped start RebleDad.com (new window) He organizes their annual conventions.

About 5 second after holding our son for the first time, though, my wife informed me that she was the one staying home. I still think I would enjoy the opportunity if it should ever be available.

As a murse I gotta say the job is awesome. I started in the OT but moved into ED and it's great. You've just got to be willing to give up your weekends, holiday times etc and function on fark all sleep. That being stated it can be a great laugh, balanced out by some true horror stories.
For example the on friday nightwe had a dude with a 4 D cell Maglite buried in him, great fun, followed by a triple fatal MVA where two kids wound up orphans, not much fun.

Yep, when they lose the respect because you are not out working, earning a manly living they are gone. Things and people do not change that much over the years.

Nurse is a feminine name for an occupation. If they called it something other than the process by which an infant suckles milk from its mother, I don't think anyone would think it's a woman's job.

No, since the attitude largely comes from women, and they are very tolerant of their own BS.

Mongo cut wood: Male Nurses have existed for decades subby. Nurses are in demand. It is a recession proof occupation. Nurses can make dam good money too. They also have Nurse Practitioners which are almost doctors.

I would not say it is recession proof, but it is an in demand skill right now and will be for the next 20-40 years. In some areas there are hireing freezes on nurses and even a few hospitals that have laid off nurses. Fortunately for nurses there are other parts of the country begging for their skills.

Anyway nurses are going to be in high demand for the next 20-40 years, until the Baby Boomers die off and then I'm afraid we will have a surplus. Unless of course scientist have a breakthrough and fully devlope the robotic nurse. Then all bets are off for human nurses.

It's not recession proof at all. Where I work we have a hiring freeze for nurses. We're still understaffed, and they're talking of laying some off. Some people in other hospitals in the area are already having their nursing hours cut back a ton.

As a stay-at-home Dad I'm getting a real kick out of these replies.

I have to say though that, having been an IT magazine editor and worked in the telecoms industry in some pretty high-pressured jobs, bringing up two pre-schoolers is by far the most tiring thing I've ever done.

You don't even get to take a crap in peace.

I was laid off in Jan, and my wife is having our first in June. I've been getting tons of housework done and planning for the baby.
When she delivers, she'll have 5 months paid off (rad company), then she'll go back to work and I'll be Mr. Mom Perfect. I want to avoid day care at all costs (literal and figurative).

Actually, the only people who seem to complain are the stay-at-home-dad's wives. Only women are supposed to get that deal.

2009-05-05 09:02:03 AM
I know a couple who's been happily married for years. They're both nurses in the E.R. And they're male and female.

of course then there's the gay paramedic who said one night "I delivered a baby and somehow managed to avoid throwing up even though I was looking at that disgusting wound women are born with."

I'd happily be a stay at home dad. I don't get what the big deal is.

Anything a man does is masculine provided he has a fistful of bacon and an open flame nearby.

Anything.
