Good, maybe they'll learn to swim. Lazy farks.

2003-02-11 09:43:03 PM
At least they have the sails. That's something, right?

2003-02-11 09:43:49 PM
Well then i guess it's back to the yacht in the bath tub for them.

The eight sails belonging to the club are in a closet at the college student union building

Oh sails, thought they said the sailors were in the closet at first glance. Hope they can get all the seamen off the sails in the closet.

I thought the Oberlin track and field team was already running on Lake Erie.

Oberlin collage? Is that something high schoolers make with magazine clippings?

Why is the 'grammar police' getting involving in spelling violations? Do their unions know about this?

For some reason, everything I've read from Psycho-Jay has pissed me off/annoyed me in one way or the other.

a $2000 J24 is going to sink in a week. tack on $5000-8000 in repairs to make it sailable and somewhat durable (and slow). the sails were donated and most likely beaten up. new ones are not cheap. the school needs support craft, docking, an insurance policy, and a new faculty position to be in charge of it all. tack on reserve cash for repairs. its not nearly worth it for the school. very few sailing clubs actually own boats, they just sit in a circle and talk about boats they saw in a magazine.

2003-02-11 10:13:22 PM
wouldn't it be ironic if they weren't allowed to sail? sigh.

2003-02-11 10:13:24 PM
That's probably wise for the college admins. All it would take would be one accident on what is admittedly a large, unpredictable lake, and the litigation free-for-all would start, costing the school an estimated 47gazillion dollars in legal costs and settlement fees. They should become a Bicycle Club instead.

2003-02-11 10:14:04 PM
Yeah Kyosuke, why is they gettin' involv-ed?

2003-02-11 10:21:10 PM
"concerned about liability" Great, I can't wait for this to become even worse until our society is so paralysed by fear of litigation that we just don't do anything at all.

2003-02-11 10:27:03 PM
Well, for once, I have to take an item on here with some seriousness... my daughter attends Oberlin presently, along with her fiancee. Oberlin College is a school that is just a hair's breath away from being in the same league as the Ivy League schools. Their academic reputation is outstanding, and the school is truly, a representation of what the collegial academic experience should be about,... if not used to be about at most schools. It's sad they couldn't allow for this to continue. So much in college is learned "outside of the classroom"... I hope the administration reconsiders.

Oh, for cryin' out loud. "Worried about liability" my ass. The Veep doesn't want to find the money in his budget for it, is all. I say if they can go to such an effort to resurrect the club, get sails, score a good deal on a boat, and they're that enthusiastic, then let them buy the frickin' boat! Stop treating them like children. Heck, even my (state-run) college had a boating club. It promotes teamwork, is intellectually stimulating, and looks good on the glossy cover of the prospectus.

That said, maybe they should just spend the cash on a bunch of lazers, and learn to sail first. Then get something a little bigger. :)

As a current Obie I have to say that there's a pretty legitimate reason for this. While the college would probably purchase a boat if the circumstances were different we're suffering from some serious revenue loss and are in a hiring freeze. I doubt many of the people who lost their jobs would be happy to hear that while there was no new money for them to keep their jobs, the administration had the funds to purchase a boat for a small sailing group. It's unfortunate but a new sail boat isn't exactly a top priority.

2003-02-11 10:40:45 PM
Having had to deal with Oberlin's stupid police force, GOOD! Stupid college don't deserve crap!

2003-02-11 10:41:04 PM
Clue for all Administrators: Your job is to make the difficult possible, not obstruction.

2003-02-11 10:57:32 PM
Used to go there. The club members are probably too stoned to care anyway. If they're not stoned, then they're probably holding committee meetings to organize a protest (or get stoned). Sigh... Things change little in 30 years...

2003-02-11 10:59:07 PM
oh, yeah, almost forgot: Duck Sux...

Sorry...

2003-02-11 11:00:23 PM
oh crap, make that "Duke" (altho Duck might suck too)... And I said the students were stoned....

2003-02-11 11:12:20 PM
A sailing club without a boat? That's almost as crazy as having a football stadium in Cincinnati.

2003-02-11 11:25:33 PM
shocker....

2003-02-11 11:49:54 PM
isn't oberlin the most liberal place on the face of the earth?

2003-02-12 01:20:54 AM
Duke Rules

2003-02-12 01:22:01 AM
oberlin is by far the most liberal place on the face of the earth, the must have a gay pride march every weekend, bathrooms are coed, and the first school to ever let blacks and women into it, but apparently sailing is a bigger risk then a bunch of gay men having unprotected sex

2003-02-12 03:57:38 AM
As an alumnus I can say Oberlin has the most...well liberal doesn't really begin to describe the student body. The professors and administrators are another story. This "liberal" melting pot is full of contradictions. It's without a doubt a great college but my ever growing student loan debt has me wishing I lived in a school with a decent state school. Any other FARK Obies?

2003-02-12 05:07:22 AM
If they could get one for $2k, they should purchase it themselves by having a bakesale. Since they are a bunch of stoners, they could sell special brownies which students and facilty alike keep coming back for..

2003-02-12 07:39:41 AM
Yes, Oberlin is the most liberal institution on the face of the earth.

2003-02-12 09:11:48 AM
Liability is a legitamate concern here. Lake Erie is 200 mi long, 60 mi wide, and averages about 50 ft deep in the western 2/3 of the lake. I've seen it go from flat calm to 6-8 ft waves in about 20 min. Because of the shallow depth, the waves are much, MUCH steeper than they would be on the ocean.

No one should sail there without crew experience first, and a real appreciation of, as Pat Dailey (one of the best song writers in the US, but sadly underappreciated) put it, "The Legend of the Lake". Especially in a J24, a nice boat, but not made for rough weather.

2003-02-12 09:41:52 AM
Notch_Johnson, the J that they are buying is likely cheap because it is being sold by an alumnus to the school because he likes the school.
By selling it at less than it is worth said alumnus gets a nice little tax break.
Also, why would a J24 need a support craft? What would that be used for?

2003-02-12 10:47:34 AM
Notch_Johnson... so you're saying I need a support craft for my J/30?

All kidding aside, as Apteryx said, Lake Erie can be a nasty body of water and a J/24 is not a blue water boat by any means. However, they are pretty sturdy craft and an experienced crew could probably handle most conditions that get thrown their way. You can turtle them and they'll half sink but as long as the watertight lockers stay shut they'll float just below the surface for quite some time. They are easy to sail and they are pretty damn cheap to maintain and keep fast.

But I've got to side with the school on the liability issue. Chances are most of the kids in this club will not be experienced sailors and the school obviously doesn't have the time, energy or resources to make sure they do. No program at all is better than a half-assed unsupervised one that could potentially be harmful and generate lawsuits.

2003-02-12 11:06:53 AM
Is this really ironic? They just can't buy a boat. It's not as if the act of purchasing a boat lost them a boat, or they had to sell their sails to buy a boat, or they had to sell all the water in the ocean to buy a boat, or ... I don't know.

If by some weird twist of fate a Princeton Eating Club didn't have any money to buy food, THAT would be ironic.

Oberlin Sucks! Carleton Rules! We kicked your ass in ultimate frisbee.

Just trying to rally up some bitterness between liberal Div. 3 schools with bad sports teams.

Actually, I almost went to Oberlin. Pretty damn liberal. As a prospective student, I roomed with a gay Filipino man and his African-American woman roommate in the dorms.

This doesn't seem like a big deal. There is an Anime club at the school where I work and their request to buy a mech was denied. Big whoop. What's next? The "Free Ferraris for Students Club" is ironically denied the funds to buy Free Ferraris for Students?

2003-02-12 04:41:13 PM
I'm an Obie - I didn't even know we HAD a sailing club. But yeah... a seriously liberal place.... except for ol' Miguel...

Sam
2003-02-12 07:03:16 PM
Hey Temp, the ultimate team is coming for you... beware. As for Miguel, well there'd be no balance at all on the campus without him. He single handedly makes up for most if not all of the socialists peddling their pricey newspaper.

2003-02-13 01:25:12 AM
Ha ha Sam, you're right. The other night in DeCafe I sat and heard him being interviewed by Channing Joseph for what I assume was the Review... it was pretty, well, interesting to say the least. I actually have a certain amount of respect for himin that he certainly doesn't back down... kinda like Brother Jed...
