I don't see the big deal with saying they blew away the competition. They most likely did since they're one of the largest communication companies out there. The shuttle broke up because of a catastrophic failure during re-entry and didn't "blow up" (as far as I know) so I don't even see this as a poor choice of words.

I was out on a boat that day and radio was the only coverage available. Our local Clear Channel stations did a good job covering it.
2003-02-11 09:31:34 AM
Collapse into Clear Channel.
2003-02-11 09:38:34 AM
Holy over-sensitive. Has "LOTR: The Two Towers" been recalled and renamed yet? *sigh*
2003-02-11 09:42:09 AM
I don't know what's worse, Meshman: that they tried to rename it, or that they are still trying.

Evil Corporation 101
2003-02-11 09:44:19 AM

2003-02-11 09:44:21 AM

2003-02-11 09:45:20 AM
Come on, even CNN had "Breaking News" when the Shuttle story broke...

"broke" there, see, its not so hard to do after all...
2003-02-11 09:45:51 AM
I'm sorry I fell asleep after the first paragraph..... what were we talking about??
2003-02-11 09:46:01 AM
Heads will roll for that.
The boss will go down in flames.
etc. etc.
2003-02-11 09:46:21 AM
"blew away the competition" is a standard corporate phrase that's been used for years.
Now to sit back and wait for all the hair splitters to call for a boycott of clear channel stations.
Now if he had said "the competition crashed and burned"
2003-02-11 09:46:51 AM
It's not their fault the shuttle exploded. I've heard media types say worse things in praise of tragedy coverage.
2003-02-11 09:47:18 AM
Oh no, my pussy fell off!!
2003-02-11 09:49:11 AM
Okay, this is no big deal. But Clear Channel is still evil.
2003-02-11 09:51:48 AM
Gee poster, overreact much?
2003-02-11 09:51:49 AM
We were still working hard and broadcasting to these communities long after the major networks had fallen silent.

The day after the crash, NPR referred to the cleanup and recovery process as "a huge undertaking." I thought that was pretty tasteless, but it seems I was the only one who noticed it.
2003-02-11 09:53:25 AM
Personally I'm all for a boycott of Clear Channel Communications stations...but not because of some stupid remark, simply because they're absolute shiat.

2003-02-11 09:53:39 AM
too bad their great coverage was experienced by about 29 people. at most.
2003-02-11 09:54:06 AM
Man, the headlines are just getting lamer and lamer. I'm going to work now.
2003-02-11 09:55:12 AM
2003-02-11 09:56:30 AM
I would've rather seen a boobies link.
2003-02-11 09:56:30 AM
Hellooooo! How many radio stations do you guys have? 20? 30? If you don't like Clear Channel programming, DON'T LISTEN!! I can't stand most of the crap on the major TV networks in the evenings, but you'll never hear me complaining about it, because I have OTHER OPTIONS!!!!

And what's wrong with a little cheerleading to lift morale!

Complain, complain, complain..
2003-02-11 09:56:33 AM
Lame post. But and kick ass.
2003-02-11 09:57:33 AM

Appropriate but ill advised :

"Great work on the shuttle coverage, the competition was blown away..".

Inappropriate and Ill advised :

"Great work on the shuttle coverage, We blew the opposition away, and they went down in a screaming heap.... over Texas."

Very Inappropriate and Extremely Ill advised :

"Great work on the shuttle coverage, the competition was showered in lumps of razor sharp shards of ceramic tiles and bubbling gobbets of Astronaut Flesh.."

2003-02-11 09:58:08 AM
This is me complaining about people who complain about people who complain.

2003-02-11 09:58:43 AM
This is just another example of people making monkeys out of molemen or whatever.
2003-02-11 09:58:49 AM
that's asanine all right, everyone knows there's no such thing as a corporate memo praising employees for a job well done.
2003-02-11 09:59:24 AM
actually, the rest of the memo is much more disturbing than the Shuttle comment. Everything *after* the shuttle mention is interesting.. and sad
2003-02-11 09:59:44 AM
blah blah blah, nothing much to see here.

I still hate clear channel, though.

Test: fu<>ck
2003-02-11 10:01:56 AM
No. This is bad. Very bad. Really, it is. Just awful. Have we gotten rid of Clear Channel yet?
2003-02-11 10:01:57 AM
Why is it that lame-arse articles such as these make it on Fark, and mine get ignored?

Hello? Anyone?

Oh whatever....
2003-02-11 10:02:11 AM
Why was this link even posted here? Biggest waste of a link ever.
2003-02-11 10:03:25 AM

clear channel still has competition?
2003-02-11 10:11:05 AM
Bah! I heard one of Clear Channel's updates as I headed into work. They couldn't even get their facts straight; I can't recall exactly what they screwed up, but it had something to do with the timeline of events.

Tell them all the great things we do within our community; how we are live, local and engaged in our markets.

Stations that Clear Channel has bought and removed much of the local content:
2003-02-11 10:12:04 AM
All your radio are belong to us.

/Obligatory Clear Channel dig.

p.s. I've worked in the radio biz for 11 years, and yes, Clear Channel is evil.
2003-02-11 10:12:44 AM
the same people bugged by this are the same people who would sue over a nursery rhyme.
2003-02-11 10:14:05 AM
I actually didn't care about that comment. It's all the stuff he said after that which bothered me.
2003-02-11 10:25:44 AM
They also claimed their coverage of the John Gotti trial was "a hit."

Oh no, my pussy fell off!!

RFOLMAO!! Just glew it back up there, you should be fine!

Anyhow, this is a pretty big non-story, but I think we can agree that Clear Channel is squeezing the life out of American radio. Can we devote the rest of the thread to saying that Clear Channel sucks? Clear Channel sucks, btw.
2003-02-11 10:35:39 AM
Haven't read comments so don't know if anyone's mentioned that CLEAR CHANNEL IS THE REASON RADIO SUCKS.

Think pop music and radio playlists have gone downhill over the last 10 years? They have, because CC bought them all and integrated all the supply chains so that there's a seamless network of support for songs from record exec drawing boards right to your eardrums. They tailor the Suck to the lowest common denomonator, and their agents proclaim it the new big thing before the public ever hears it. They're like the WWE of music, and pop stars are the wrestlers. Microsoft is also a good comparison.

Clear Channel is the reason independent music suffers DESPITE the emergence of the most amazing tool for exposure since radio began: the internet.

Back totally on topic, did we really NEED all the post-shuttle explosion bleating and tear jerking video montages? Or the constant updates when debris is found? I guess it's good to pat your own back when you promote the already epidemic habits of rubbernecking and tragedy addiction in the USA...
2003-02-11 10:36:37 AM

This posting "blew".
2003-02-11 10:40:52 AM
My local clear channel affiliate made sure to play "Space Oddity" on that fateful day.
2003-02-11 10:47:59 AM
I will point my finger at them and laugh, but mostly because of other reasons for which they are evil.

Um, most of us don't have many options besides CC stations to listen to. Back home, every local station was owned by Clear Channel and sucked royally.

I'd get XM but that's owned by Clear Channel too.
