At this rate the media will stir this up to get your guns, liquor and women locked up by Friday. The media wants to make this 1918 all over again, despite us having antibiotics, sufficient nutrition, and methods of rehydration when you vomit/"poop" all your fluids out and 90 years of other medical advances. There was probably more stained underwear in NY from the adventure of the plane usually known as Air Force One over Manhattan then there will be from the flu.

In my wife's office, the people who work with the customers asked for masks and to make the guy just back from Cancun to wear gloves (they're also making noise about the rapture -- whatever).

I've been working at the high school the last couple of days (no swine flu here!) and I've spent my free time randomly flipping through the channels on the TV. On every single news channel, all I've seen for two days is "Swine flu!--swine flu--Swine Flu!"

I really don't mind not having cable at home.

It will be back Monday dropping "The 'Hammerdown Protocol' and You: A Handy Guide!"

Dear Jeebus, your people are stupid.

Yesterday at the pharmacy, while picking up some pain meds, I watched 3 dumb-asses in a row come looking for surgical masks to wear around. The tech had to tell them they were all out. There has been a state-wide run on masks in Texass.

The part that made it so mind-numbingly moronic was when the Pharmacist told them that she had bought up all the ones from the other pharmacy across the street since her place of business was out. But she wasn't wearing one of the damned things.

If you are going to be a paranoid mongoloid, have at it. But if you are an actual medical professional, and are telling people you are concerned enough to go raid the inventory of another business, at least use the frakking things in a high-risk environment like a pharmacy.

Make a fake vaccine, sell it on TV. Odds are most people who buy it won't get sick. Those that do refund money - s+h. "It's so new the FDA hasn't had a chance to approve it yet."
Bonus, the people dumb enough to buy it, at $25/person, oral. Will likely not even ask for a refund if they get sick. Make it a mixture of koolaid for color and astroglide so it tastes mediciney but is all sugar.
\Give me 5%.

Many of hundreds of kids may have swine flu. Many hundreds of kids may exhibit mild flu symptoms. Many hundreds of kids might miss a day or two of school and then go back fully healthy.

Many hundreds of adults may wish for the people spreading all this swine flu hoopla to experience the joys of hemorrhagic fever.

When the real threats come, I'll stop. This isn't a cure, it's a preventative measure to prevent contracting** the virus you probably won't get in the first place.*

A co-worker of mine just informed me that she was not at risk because she never consumes pork products. She's the kind of person who always comes in sick and infects everyone, usually around the holidays or when someone's about to go on vacation, so I admit, I put the fear of God into her about the swine flu. Just to ensure that she'll stay home, shivering in terror under her covers, if she so much as sneezes.

Like I said in another thread: Every shift I work on the ambulance this week has been dominated with people convinced they have Swine Flu. And they don't even have a fever, let alone diarrhea and vomiting. Nor have they been to Mexico within... Ever.

Jebus, people, this isn't even as bad as the non-epidemics that was SARS, West Nile, Monkey Pox, Bird Flu, and how many other health scares that amounted to nothing. It's not drug resistant, and can be beat back with antivirals pretty easily. Current vaccinations are effective against it. And although it's extremely infectious, it's symptoms aren't even that bad compared to other flu strains out there. You shiat liquid and live off Jello and Gatorade for a few days, and if things get worse you go to a doctor or ER where the miracles of modern science take care of you.

Not saying that it COULDN'T happen, and it certainly warrants the actions being taken by the government right now, but it's not yet time to run around and panic. Get your panties out of a twist and relax.

Back of the envelope calculation: 7/64 americans with Swine Flu Hospitalized, a bit more than 10%. If we use the mexican death rate of hospitalized flue victims (we have no idea how many are infected but not hopsitalized, but there may also be unreported deaths) 150/1600. So again, abit less than 10%. So it should take about 100 cases before we see our first death (not taking into acount potentially superior care). Will you guys shut up then with your overhype claims? how about when a few hundred americans are dead?

The local pharmacy was out of masks when I checked as well. I've been in a complete panic ever since -- although I've sworn off pork products since last Friday, my tweeps say that the virus can also travel through the air. I'm taking the precaution of wearing a Shamwow as an improvised mask until I can find something better.

2009-04-28 07:28:11 PM
So we have a assumed 6% fatality rate in Mexico, assuming every case reported is all we've seen. How likely is it that they've had thousands upon thousands of cases that went unreported since they were mild like the ones in the US, and if you can assume there have been a ton more cases (say, over 10k), the fatality rate is less than 1%.

I can't wait for the next phase when the media-driven hype causes masses of people to clog hospital emergency rooms every time they have a little sniffle or cough.

2009-04-28 07:32:42 PM
Even if we presume a 1% mortality rate, and a 30% infection rate (totally random), you are talking 1 million dead americans. If its only a 00.1% death rate, same rate of infection, your talking 300,00 dead americans, 10x the regular rate. Should we just ignore it? Do you want a 1/100 chance of dying from the flu this year, or would it be prudent to take steps to reduce that rate?

Well, to put that in perspective, the 1918 influenza pandemic only had a mortality rate of ~2%.

Thank god the flu doesn't happen every year!

Oh wait...it does? Then why don't they disinfect schools every time someone gets the flu?

What's this? No one cares unless the media tells them to panic?

Interesting.

Too late. They already are. People are freaking out. I brought a patient with a possible stroke the other day, and three people tried to come in the ambulance bay with us (it requires a password) because they were convinced they had Swine Flue and just couldn't wait in triage with all those "...other people that aren't even sick!"

Honest.

AdolfOliverPanties: At my work today they gave everyone a bottle of hand sanitizer.

That's actually not a bad course of action. That's going to do more to stop the spread than those stupid masks. We do have them, but I only use them to cover the PATIENT'S mouth, so when they cough it contains the spittle and particulates.

Shadowknight Current vaccinations are effective against it.

No, current vaccinations aren't effective against this particular virus. You see, when they create each year's flu vaccinations, they guess at which strains will be the most prevalent in the coming flu season. That's why you must get vaccinated EVERY year for the flu. No one knew about this particular strain. It's just been discovered. It's a new strain. There are no vaccinations against it.

I'm not panicking. I'll wait for otherwise healthy young people in the developing world to start dying from immune systems gone crazy, as happened in the 1918 flu before I start getting anxious.

BUT, the government can't wait to find out if it's going to be very lethal or not. They have to get people and assets into place. You know, like not waiting for the tornado to come within 100 feet of you before you start digging a storm shelter?

IF, and that's a big IF, the virus is as lethal as it appears to have been in Mexico, the time to act is now. We can't afford a wait and see attitude. They need to get the word out so people will remember to wash their hands and states can step up their monitoring.

More research needs to be done and from what I understand that is what is happening. Meanwhile the general public just needs to be aware of what's going on.

For those of us who work with germy students, some of whom have contact with visitors from Mexico or who may have themselves traveled to Mexico, I appreciate the media informing me of what's going on.
