Been fining people for years in New Smyrna. They have signs stuck all over the sliding glass doors to the beach front balconies to the point you can't see out of them. At least you get the message and a $300 fine will be your own fault.

So protecting wildlife is now an odd notion on FARK?

Cue Rush Limbaugh crying about him not being able to light up his backyard at night. Every year about this time he starts crying about his rights to turn night into day versus the turtles that will become stranded on the sand.

Mmmmm. I love Turtles.

Old news is exciting. Same situation happens on Hilton Head, where the folks live.

Basically, it's Loggerhead Turtle mating season. The female lays her eggs in the dunes. When the little ones hatch, they head towards the source of brightest light they sense... which, in nature, is the light of the moon reflecting off the ocean's surface. But if there's bright lights aimed towards the waters, the little ones head the wrong way. It's much safer for them once they get to the water than it is in the dunes with the snakes. On HHI, there's all sorts of strict fines involved for aiming ANY light towards the beach from a condo/house/villa. Mood light on your deck or in your place is OK as long as it's aimed away from the water and not too harsh.

/in before, or maybe after, I like turtles.

I think the subby was just as stymied as I am that you can't have your porchlights on at night when you live on a beach where turtles fark.....

soon, we humans will have to die to save all other spieces, but hey, it's worth it.

Also, this will prevent ships from being silhouetted against the coast, keeping them from being easy targets for zombie u-boats.

a bunch of stray dogs dug this little guy up down in costa rica. we tried getting him to the water but he was too little and too weak from his fight with the dogs to make it.

Still ok to fap to it, right?

All up and down the coast. Hilton Head and Fripp Island are the same way.

You're a waste of carbon. Please recycle yourself so as to not further pollute the gene pool.

Unless you were being snarky, in which case I consider myself "had".

In my bygone college days, I was sitting on a beachside deck @ Tops'l Beach Resort in Destin, Florida at about 2 or 3 in the morning, right after a shift at the restaurant. Drinking a couple beers with my friend Tim. Maybe 22 years ago.

Anyway, right below our feet, hatching under the dock and beginning their awkward, miraculous, juggernaut clamber to the surf, were a clutch of hatchling turtles, maybe a hundred strong. They were tiny, maybe an inch across.

It was a kind of a life-changing thing back then, to see this rare event. We probably watched it all happen for 90 minutes. I remember it in my mind like it was yesterday.

I saw a turtle !!

i costa rica they use what are called RED LIGHTS near beaches where turtles lay eggs. you can still see whats going on and where you're going but it doesn't confuse the babies.

The Turtles, they don't fark. They make love.

That's what we'll tell them it's so it doesn't confuse the baby turtles! Brilliant!

This happens at our place in Sarasota. The properties also have to hire people to gather up the beach chairs and stack them every single night so the turtles don't run into them.

I have never seen a turtle on that beach in my 37 years of visiting.

I have now typed/thought more about about beach turtles than I ever would have imagined.

I happened to be on the beach when I was a kit when apparently all of these sea turtles hatched. They were all confused and were heading inland. Now I probably violated some kind of law against nature, but I stayed out there for hours scooping them up with my hat and carrying them all to the sea. Just seemed like the right thing to do. And yeah, they were cute and helpless...

I am guessing if the inability to brightly light your beachfront yard 24/7/365 results in death, well, good. The rest of us will carry on the human species.

2009-04-28 02:36:20 PM
Just in case this isn't clear yet--it's not so they can fark, it's so they can navigate to the beach to lay their eggs. If they don't get them in the right spots, the babies will never make it to the water.

But if all the lights are out, how will I know I'm NOT farking a sea turtle? Beer goggles don't come with night vision!

Then again, watching determined ignorance in the face of facts is really what fark is all about, right?
