(Wall Street Journal)   A junior mayoral aide who had been alerted to the military flyover was reprimanded for not apprising the mayor, and a disciplinary letter was placed in his file for causing NYC to PANIC yesterday. Well, now all is good   (online.wsj.com) divider line 147

I didn't read much about this story, but it seems to me that flying a 747 at low altitude over Manhattan without anyone knowing it was going to happen is just about the stupidest decision someone can make. They could have turned it into a spectacle. A sensation. "Ladies and Germs, Air Force One will be skimming 3000 feet over Broadway tomorrow at noon!" That would be pretty neat.

Instead they scared the pants off everyone.

A photo-op???? You're kidding.....

Hasn't anyone in the Whitehouse heard of photoshop?

I'd imagine it might not have been too bad if it was just the 747 but seeing it being tailed by the fighter jet was probably just as scary.
Truly a blunder in not realizing how people would react to seeing that image.

Well it is kind of sad that they couldn't recognize the most recognizable airplane in the world.

As for subtard, what do you want? Do you want the poor bastard hung for public amusement? Would that satisfy your barbaric thirst?

You can't do that because some a*hole might have a rocket-propelled grenade. But there should have been a coordinated effort to announce what was happening AS it was happening, so people didn't farking panic.

So, lets see how in-touch the mayor is:

Playing solitare - Fired.
Not notifying the public that a 747 & fighter jets would be flying directly at the financial centers of the world - Note in file.

Good to see he has his priorities in order.

People down at the harborfront buildings basically saw a 747 and fighter jets coming directly at their building, not above it, directly at it. The same people who were in the WTC when they saw the same thing 7 years ago. Heck, I would have ran out screaming if that happened to me twice.

Action Replay Nick: So, I'm supposed to have my panties all in a wad because people in New York are a bunch of pussies?

So much this.

First, it's freakin' Air Force One (well, one of the two planes they use for Air Force One). It has a distinctive paint job that *EVERYONE* should be familiar with.

Second, it was being escorted by two fighter aircraft. If there was a serious problem, they'd have shot it down *BEFORE* it got near NYC.

Third, the appropriate people were called and warned.

Fourth, you guys are supposed to be NEW YAWKERS. You know, tough. Able to make it in the tough town that is the Big Apple. I know that violent crime in NYC has dropped by 75% in the last decade or so, but did you lose your legendary toughness along with that? What happened?

There are lots of jews in New York. If they could pull off 9/11, I think they could hack Air Force One and have it crash into the Empire State Building and bring it down.

interesting. So it is your premise that publicity photos are all about the publicity and not about substance. It only there was a suitable phrase that could be used to describe this sort of photo.

Should we live in a constant state of fear?
Because that's what the terrorists want.

It's why they keep showing those images of that jet going behind that building over and over and over on Fox News.
It's why they go on with the incessant fear mongering.

Rupert Murdoch's Corporation is a more effective terrorist group than bin Laden's.

In this particular case it doesn't matter. Air Force One is only Air Force One if the president is on board. Who cares if it gets shot down if the president isn't aboard? It's just a plane. And 747s aren't exactly overwhelmingly expensive. If they wanted photo ops, they could just paint a 747 cargo plane in Air Force One colors and fly it around all they want.

Yes, yes, this made a lot of sense. The people who fertilize government lawns should update their file photos by parking trucks full of fertilizer in front of government buildings. That'd make a great photo!

It could have been a cool thing if people had been told about it. Instead, it turned into a typical government action. Wasteful, boneheaded, and without regard to the actual citizens the government is meant to serve.

Yeah, and before you get the word shiat out, you're headed for the door like everyone else.

Personally, I was just pissed off because half of my company was missing for half an hour, but when I went down to have a smoke I saw that some people were legitimately scared

I know that, on the news, you couldn't see the Presidential Seal until they zoomed in on it, so I can understand if people can't distinguish it from an ordinary "big airplane". After all, for people who don't know their makes and models, isn't the Seal the only thing that would set it apart.

But I came here to say your second point: It seems that someone cannot make a mistake any more. We live in a society who seems to believe that there's not enough punishment for someone who doesn't meet our own standard of behavior. Oh, but if *I* do something that doesn't meet *your* standards, well then that's YOUR problem and you should get over it.

my plebian take:

- the junior mayoral aide wasn't fired because the aide farked up; the aide was fired because junior folks and us plebebs are always the fall guy/wingman. i hope that 'disciplinary letter' mysteriously disappears in about 3 to 6 months, as a courtesy.

- the mayor is a jackarse.

- solitaire didn't get anyone fired; solitaire was the excuse used to fire someone management was looking to get rid of already.

- it doesn't matter what was painted on the sides, a plane was coming right at people's buildings followed by fighter jets so people assumed some major shiat was about to go down.

- photo ops can be good. not everything needs to be CGI fake.

- OldManDownDRoad's photoshop made me chuckle.

Yep.

It's also incredibly expensive to do it, and it wouldn't matter anyway from an air defense/air traffic control standpoint. It would be pointless.

Also, you are forgetting the thing was being escorted by two fighters.

Mark Ecko heads a shiat magazine, but that was one hell of a 'prank'. He set the bar high; few reach it, let alone leap it.

dittybopper: Third, the appropriate people were called and warned.

And told NOT to make it public. WTF? Schumer's right: there was no need for secrecy for a photo-op.

The FAA was pulling shiat like this back in '02-03 when troops were being flown home from overseas - they'd get a NYC flyover as sort of a welcome-home, but the FAA wouldn't bother letting anybody in the city know until about two minutes before it happened.

New boss, same asshattery.

Again, you make it seem like two jet fighters should somehow be comforting. From our angle it looked like they could have just closed in on the thing but couldn't shoot because the plane was already over the city.

Incredibly expensive? Thank God Osama doesn't have a lot of money that he can dedicate to wiping out the USA.

Sometimes all a plan needs to work is a moment of indecision on the part of the defenders. Any pilot ordered to shoot it down is going to ask for some serious confirmation.

Those fighters? We have sold those to lots of foreign countries. How tough would it really be for Osama to get one from a Muslim country?

Look, if you want to find some reason to bash the people of NYC, go ahead but their reaction to this event is completely logical.
