This thread is even more total drunken desperate attempts at juvenile repetitive shallow humor than is normal for Fark. I can see why most of my friends consider Fark to be a sort of cardboard box-fort for fat 20-something Internet shut-ins.

I'm waiting to hear that what we have been jokingly referring to as "death flu" at my job, and seems to have infected a hundred or more people there (not even kidding) is swine flu. I had something 10 days ago and I have not been that sick in years. I am still not totally better. Metro KC area.

Exactly... and for some bizarro-land reason the only border he ever found threatening was the northern one! With Canada! Ha!

Read up

Considering that article was written by a doctor who has written books on the subject of pandemic flus, it's surprisingly dismissive. Granted, I am not a doctor, but I don't suffer from the "fear of the word pandemic", "fear of dirty pigs", and "fear of Mexicans" (don't believe me? read it) factors that this guy cites as hype blowing all this out of proportion.

Also, his statement "We need to remember that fear causes people to take less precautions..." made me go "WHAT".

/usually consider Fox to be a respectable news outlet
//at least as much so as CNN or NBC

I didn't quite understand that statement either. Would have thought just the opposite with fear causing more precautions to be taken. But, what the fark do I know, right?

We are down the rabbit hole folks:

Swine flu now in New Zealand:

Twenty-two students from Auckland's Rangitoto College, may have been infected with the Swine Flu, which the World Health Organisation warn could start a global epidemic.

The students, believed to be senior students, arrived back to New Zealand via Los Angeles on Saturday, after a language trip to Mexico.

My folks/nieces were both very sick for the last few weeks: all the symptoms, including high fever, respiratory problems, body ache and lethargia (except vomiting for one of them). They live in the Imperial Valley, Mexifornia. Their doctors told them it was just a bad cold with bronchitis for the adults.

ITIL Prince: I am ignorant of virus protocol, so please, an educated Farker let me know: wouldn't it be better to get this very early so the health system can cure you because it's not overloaded? Then your body would have built up immunity so you don't get it again. Then you can even help out in the crowded hospitals. Or is that not applicable with viruses? I always assumed the common cold was caught again and again because it adapted like crazy.

Probably not. Viruses tend to be less lethal during the latter stages of outbreaks. Also, flu mutates like a mofo, so if you got it early you might not be immune to a later variant.

I am doomed.

I live in a house full of Mexicans. Mexicans come from Mexico City to visit every other month. My Hispanic husband (threw that in for good measure) works in health care and is exposed to all kinds of crap daily. With my luck, as the only white person in the house, I will be the only one to get and die from the flu.

I think I'm going to quarantine myself in my bedroom for the next few months.

If you were to double check your math, that's a 6% fatality rate. I really, really hope this is a limited outbreak, but it doesn't seem to be. Swine Flu H1N1 was first seen two weeks ago in Mexico city, which is ideal for the strain, as it's the world's most populous city. It seems to be a combination of human, avian and swine in one and does travel person-to-person - which was our worst case scenario. If it kept up an infection rate of 50% and spread rapidly, even if the death rate halved (to 3%), within 3-4 weeks, New York City would have 125,000 dead and LA would see 75,000 dead.

This is not dissimilar to the Flu of 1918, except then we did not have the ability to spread the pathogen around the world within days.

Current CDC stats: California has 7 confirmed cases, Texas 2, Kansas 2.

The AP is reporting another 8-200 potential cases in New York (new window)

The CDC is updating it's site by the hour, 24 hours a day now.

Link (new window)

As much as people liked to make fun of the media for bird flu, it does appear that this H1N1 swine flu one has all the signs of being able spread rapidly and may be a pandemic. It also seems to be mimicking the kill pattern of the 1918 flu, in that it kills the healthiest individuals. Particularly 16-30 year-olds. The elderly and young get off the easiest. The stronger the immune system, the stronger (and more deadly) the body's natural response.

It takes several days for symptoms to begin showing, so as we speak, people who appear healthy could very well be infected. If the number of confirmed infected in the US triples before Monday, I'll probably call in sick/attempt to work from home.

As for the people who are saying it's a "pretty weak game"... it just takes a long time to play even the relaxed version. But, meh, why else do I have dual monitors if not to have an utter waste of time on one, and something semi-productive on the other?
/Guess which monitor Fark goes on :P

it's really just a matter of shutting down your symptoms until you have widespread seeding in various countries. Then you add symptoms that help promote infection. Finally, when all are wise to you anyway, you turn up drug resistance, turn up nasty stuff like hypersensitivy, renal failure, and hemorrhage, and watch the fun!

Heard on the news that there was a confirmed case in the UK also.

Newspapers still say chance of infection here in Belgium is small to non-existant. Mainly because Mexico is considered to be a 'less sophisticated' environment, and also because contact between livestock and humans is more likeley in Mexico than it is in Belgium.
They also claim the risk is smaller because there's a large body of water separating us, and as the bird flu didn't invade over land from China, they reckon the Mexican flu will even have a harder time.

Although I think they didn't think about those big metal thingies, passing over the pond.

So, in fact, this is man-bird-pig flu? And it seems to be super serial....

Since this seems to be 'Explain A Cliche-Day', can someone point out where Shoop Da Whoop (chargin' mah lazor) originated from?

This flu has the capability of what's called a Cytokine storm. It turns your immune capability against your body, turning the knob to 11 and causing inflammation, sweats, necrosis of healthy tissue, etc.

The healthier you are, if you catch this, the worse off you will be.

2009-04-26 08:56:48 AM
No one here has dies from it YET, rockystar. The high risk complication (pneumonia), because the normal antibiotics don't work...

from wiki:

Viral pneumonia caused by influenza A may be treated with rimantadine or amantadine, while viral pneumonia caused by influenza A or B may be treated with oseltamivir or zanamivir. These treatments are beneficial only if they are started within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

2009-04-26 09:33:26 AM
Normally heat is what kills viruses. That's why your body heats up when invaded by them. If it gets overwhelmed, it overheats and you die.

2009-04-26 10:15:26 AM
This virus is a mix of human, pig and bird strains from multiple continents.

Scientists are looking at samples now and say they have
NEVER seen it before in man or animal.

It is not hard to figure out- with no Origin-

It is man made.

If you were to double check your math, that's a 6% fatality rate...

This 6% is also based off of known infections. With the kids in California they where confirmed swine flu only after they where better, most of the NY kids didn't need any medical attention and since nobody was testing for swine flu for the last month (was first discovered back in March) the number of infected people could be pushing 10,000 but nobody knows it because for the last month when someone got swine flu they didn't know it and just hunkered down in bed for a few days since most people don't see the doctor when they get the flu.

For the next week these figures may increase because now people are going to see the doctor when they get sick so in a few weeks we'll know the true nature of the beast (unless people really start dropping like flies), but with a bit of luck this might be a mild pandemic (if one at all) meaning low mortality rate. Remember a pandemic doesn't have to kill a lot of people, just sicken a lot of people over a large geographic area.
