Get out before it's too late. They'll make you post pictures of your holiest of holies. They'll make you laugh at things that would bring tears to the most pathic of sociopaths. You'll speak of stranger's mothers as tubes, receptacles, and many other sick sexual euphemisms. Burn your clothes and shower.

lazymojo: Cue the racist, anti-hispanic immigration comments from retards...

When the whites came to America they attacked by the native population, but the white with their diseases managed to overcome the enemy. Then the blacks came and brought their own diseases like aids to wipe out the whites, but it backfired.

Now the hispanics are trying, will they succeed? Or will it backfire like has happened to every race that has tried to oppose God's chosen people?

You know, this thread is great and all.. but your post really was the icing on the cake. Well done.

I am also waiting for the truther-types to say that this was deliberately planted in Mexico to further the case for building the wall and closing the border. They may be right, but it is so predictable and fun to watch happen..

So, can this be spread by smoking Mexican ditch weed?

Darwin is not the alpha & omega.

1918 Spanish Flu killed 20-100 million worldwide, and more than 50% of victims in prime of life. Cytokine storms are worst in a peak immune system.

Humanity does not gain experience points from this type of combat I'm afraid.

MadSkillz: YixilTesiphon: Meh. Hopefully this isn't the big one, but we're long overdue.

Whoah now. How can we be long overdue for something that happens at random? There is no valid statistical model to predict how often a major flu pandemic will attack. Just because 1919 was 90 years ago doesn't make 'major flu kill' imminent.

There is not enough solid data to statistically model flu pandemics. However, there are roughly 3 a century. The last 4 were 1889, 1918, 1957, and 1968. Over 40 years have passed since the last one - the longest gap between pandemics in modern history. I think its safe to say we're overdue, even if you can't use statistics to prove it.

This just in (from the NYT)

""It's clear that this is widespread," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Interim Deputy Director for Science and Public Health Program for the C.D.C. said in a teleconference on Saturday afternoon. "We do not think we can contain the spread of this virus.""

Does this mean we should panic now?

Yeah, except this one has killed young & healthy.

/Yes, I'm scared shiatless

It means it's an autoimmune disease like the old spanish flu from 1918 was. It will not just kill the young and healthy, but kill PRIMARILY the young and healthy, since babies and old people don't have very effective immune systems. Diseases like this work by turning your own immune system against you.

the CDC recommends:

1Avoid close contact.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2Stay home when you are sick.

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
3Cover your mouth and nose.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4Clean your hands.

Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
5Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6Practice other good health habits.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

I am -so- farked.

There was an outbreak of swine flu in 1976. I remember this because my sister was in the second grade at the time she came down with it, and she missed at least 5 weeks of school.

Posted this in the other thread, but it was already dead. So here ya go...

Some fun things to consider:

1) Most seasonal flu infects people between Sept/Oct through about March, while pandemic flu can infect people year round almost (the 1918 flu's first rounds really got heated up in April and was killing people in Europe all through the summer)

2) The only other known flu epidemic to kill primarily young, healthy people between 25-40 that there are detailed stats on was the 1918 epidemic. The 1957/8 and 1968 epidemics killed primarily the elderly and already immunosuppressed. They did not seem to cause the cytokine storm that the 1918 one did (don't know if this one is displaying this tendency yet - the people who died could have just been in poor health already or had additional complications, such as dehydration)

3) The 1918 flu was actually a mix strain containing human, swine and some avian strands (the H1N1 is not in itself frightening as it is one of 2 strains that commonly affect people in seasonal flu - it's the mixing of the animal strains and then the transmission between humans like this one is doing, rather than needing an animal to transmit to human)

Some good news:

1) 2 known flu meds still seem to be effective against this strain

2) Mexico is being proactive in preventing large gatherings and spread of the disease and a vaccine will probably be developed before this becomes too dangerous

3) Because it is being widely investigated and reported on, doctors will better be able to identify and treat patients with less danger to other patients and with the most effective treatments

75 kids sickened at NYC school(pops)...Looks like mass exposure at one NYC location: water supply? School is being closed "as a precaution"...yeah right.

"Anything that would be about containing it right now would purely be a political move," said Michael Osterholm, a University of Minnesota pandemic expert.

I believe that in a story I read on the NY case some students from that school recently took a trip to Mexico and that only a handful are verified with a strain that is "probable" swine flu. Water supply is not a common flu vector, however it can become an airborn threat like the 1918 pandemic did.

Some of the kids had been on vacation in Mexico. The Reuters article makes it sound like they have all gotten better already. The first case in San Diego started on April 6 (16 year old girl) followed by her father 2 days later and they are better now.
