CygnusDarius: vylasaven: Isn't disease a mechanism by which most populations of animals (which is what we are) control their numbers by weeding out the weak and elderly? Should we just let this run its course and see who survives?

I'd like to get back to genetic basics. :P

Yeah, except this one has killed young & healthy.

/Yes, I'm scared shiatless

Young and healthy in Mexico, which is "barely alive" here. Notice no fatalities in the US.

Nothing to see here people. Keep eating that pork. They probably named this flu after a dude named Dr. Swine and not anything related to your meat being raised in horrific disease inducing squalor.

Epiphany: akula: CowboyUpCowgirlDown: The Fail is strong with this one.

1. Mexico City doesn't have a President.
2. They only closed cultural centers (museums, theaters, etc) and schools: public transit, stores, and offices remain open.
3. I submitted this with 5 headlines: they were all better.

You must be new here.

For those who don't get it...

Pandemic 2 is a flash based game where the player fills the role of a disease trying to kill humanity. You only win if you get to all areas of the globe, but you must also only have a specific number of transport methods. Madagascar is notoriously difficult to infect due to the area's tendency to shut down all ports the moment anything looks awry. This has become a full fledged Fark meme.

You must be new here, the game has been brought up multiple times in this thread, yet you explain it like you're the first one to do it. Also, you said "fark meme" which is an instant fail. Most memes don't originate on fark.

Who pissed in your Cheerios this morning? I was answering a question with an answer that clearly had less than the maximum allowable amounts of snark in it.

As for being "new," check your join date in your profile. Then look at mine. Then feel free to fark yourself, dickweed.

The cool thing about this one is that it's not 100% bird flu, it's not 100% swine flu, it's not 100% human flu, it's all THREE mixed together:

"The new virus has genes from North American swine influenza, avian influenza, human influenza and a form of swine influenza normally found in Asia and Europe" said Nancy Cox, chief of the CDC's Influenza

This virus knows how to mutate baby!

As for the people who are saying it's a "pretty weak game"... it just takes a long time to play even the relaxed version. But, meh, why else do I have dual monitors if not to have an utter waste of time on one, and something semi-productive on the other?

Oh a naturalist! I love you guys.

Hey, dude, do me a favor, while typing away on your plastic keyboard, posting witty survival-of-teh-fittest wishes to the Internet, can you look out your window and point to something that man has not manipulated into his environment?

You'll probably pick the closest tree... that one that was planted and/or cultivated by a man 200 years ago. Fail. Try again. Hill? Fail. Try again. That mountain? The one with the big path and the scout base on it? Fail. Try again. Ants? They're living off of us. Fail.

My point, and I do have one, is that we are way, way past the time in our existence where we can pretend that something in our environment is taking it's natural course. This includes all the viruses we kick off with our behavior. Thinking that a deadly man-caused plague should "take it's natural course" is like thinking that Hummers grow in pumpkin patches.

So take that pseudo-darwinist babble and please shove it into the closest junk drawer, Nature Boy. Nothing we do is natural, nothing that happens to us is natural.

UnkoPatrol: This virus knows how to mutate baby!

Actually, the combination of flu strains has to do more with the people carrying it being exposed to multiple flu strains rather than a mutation. Although the flu virus most certainly does mutate, hence the breathless waiting to see if H5N1 learned to spread from human to human.

A meme is an internet inside joke used over and over again on the internet. To imply that it is a fark meme is to imply it originated on fark. If it's a meme that's used on fark, it's still just a meme.
