I think that's near the spot we went off.

There were four of us in my car coming back from up north. It was my car, and I was sleeping in the back. My brother was driving. I woke up to people screaming "We're gonna die" and realizing I was near-weightless and upside down. I somehow knew we were going off the cliff, and I became completely serene. I was just accepting the fact that I was about to die. Suddenly, we hit hard on the roof and flipped over right-side-up, then a hard stop. Along miles and miles of PCH (Hwy 1), there is a HUGE cliff - straight down to rocks and the ocean. However, along all that stretch, there was a little ledge - maybe 14 feet long and ten feet wide - that was about ten feet down. We were lucky and that's where we went off. Another stroke of luck - there was a huge boulder at the edge of the ledge that stopped us from plummeting all the way down. Destroyed my car, but we all walked (or limped) away from it and enjoyed a limo ride back home.

Before we got our ride home, a cop drove us to this burger stop along the way. He was flying around the curves, and us grown men help each other's hands the whole way. Cop thought it was funny. We waited at the burger stop, and tourists who would stop asked us if we were the ones who went off the cliff. Apparently, we were on all the local radio news broadcasts. It was a weird experience.

DeCypher44: I think that's near the spot we went off.

Dude. That is crazy. You're very lucky.

I just drove this (southbound) about three weeks ago, and forgot how damn high up it is, it is ridiculously steep between Ragged Point and Big Sur. I remember one trip several years ago where we saw a bunch of search-and-rescue/emergency vehicles and a bunch of rescuers standing along the edge all looking down. No idea what happened, but it couldn't have been good.

That highway was just named America's #1 Scariest Road (pops).

That was a very informative article.

She crawled through a big pipe underneath the highway to get back to the road, according to a CHP report. She reportedly had an injured knee.

And it took her three days?

Apart from the jarring impact of the sudden stop, the weightless thing would be pretty cool. Good thing you didn't get the long version.

Driving southbound on that road provides ample opportunity to scare the crap out of your passengers.

Heh.. I was in Utah last week and there was a radio story about a young man disappearing a year or two ago and they just found his car(and his body next to it) off the side of a cliff/embankment in a rural stretch of road. Scary shiat. There one minute, gone the next, and noone even knows where you are

2009-04-20 07:10:17 PM
Bah!

In my day, that was called parking. Except we had to do it naked, in the snow. And the cliff was higher.

Get off my lawn.

Yeah, only on Fark. You are right. What makes a hero in your world? Killing a dragon on WoW? Tweeting a million times in a day?

Hero Tag? She must've saved a bald eagle on the way back to the road.

Lend my vote to I-15 and the Cajon Pass. That road is scary and not because of the highway, but the idiots that drive on it. For some reason, people love to travel that stretch of road at ridiculously high speeds (90+ mph) Also, it is frequently windy in the pass so the high centered vehicles have difficulty maintaining control. Definitely not worth traveling on if at all possible.

Big Sur is scary to drive, but beautiful. I rented a car and did it last fall. For someone who hasn't owned a car for most of her adult life and only drives about 4 times a year (I take the subway)it was a nerve-racking but amazing experience. Glad to hear it turned out well for her.

I will do my best not to drive over any cliffs though.

Well, if you drive over a cliff and save a bus full of children while losing all four limbs, don't bother posting it here. That is NOT heroic!

Sounds like the start of a bad science fiction story. It took three days because she had to bury the body of the other woman, except she didn't bury it very deep...they never hide the bodies well, do they? Seems like that's how they always mess up. A dead body falls out of someone's closet or somewhere.

Three days crawling through a pipe with an injured knee? Ouch. I wonder if she saw a light at the end of the tunnel.

She probably spent half the time sobering up.

Saw this red Jetta in Big Sur last weekend. If the cliffs don't get ya' the mudslides will!

I grew up in that region and on a Boy Scout outing to Big Sur we were behind this woman that started to swerve and she hit the guide rail on a corner and went up onto the side of the mountain and then back to the guide rail and stopped at the mountain. We jumped out of the car to go help her.

She had fallen asleep at the wheel after being at her father's funeral. That is one of the small areas with a guard rail so she was really lucky.

Leadville to Minturn CO, in the snow is by far worse! 1000+ft drops and no gaurdrails! I've driven 1 multiple times and never whiteknuckled the wheel like the trips from Leadville to Minturn.

Unless she had time to text her final message while plunging 150 feet she was obviously on a mission.

I thought that was one of the most fun drives I had. Used to do IT work for Pacific Valley school; I'd drive up there once every few weeks.

It would be quite terrifying to go over the edge though, it was very shear with quite a drop to the pounding surf and rocks.
