I'm a block away, it stinks outside.
Smoke looked kind of cool, would have been cooler before 9-11, now a bit errie.
Anyway looks like it's mostly over

I'm kinda curious now if we can set some sort of record for most Wilford Brimley pics in a single thread...

Are you Farkers up to the challenge??!!! :)

Reverend Oats, on the Rooftop, with a Cooling Unit.

2003-02-07 11:40:40 AM
The roof, the roof the roof is on fire. We don't need no water, let the motherf**ker burn. burn motherf**ker burn!

That song is so fitting right now.

We get a little touchy about fire in this town.

[image from cyberhymnal.org too old to be available]

And that's why we have the best Fire Department there is. Go CFD!

I'm out in the Chicago burbs and I saw the smoke from out here. Thought the city was buring down.
What the hell is up with Chicago and things on fire?

2003-02-07 11:50:14 AM
There were 5 books on this happening by the same author. I think it was a cerial.

2003-02-07 11:50:21 AM
Hey Fark, the "Quakery" caught fire and the whole town (of Chicago) smells like oatmeal cookies, wanna go smell?

2003-02-07 11:50:53 AM
Hey morden2261, is that name a B5 reference?

Tatum: I know - it almost sounds counter-intuitive.

When flour dust is airborne, it is highly flammable. If ignited, it spreads quickly like an explosion. It used to be a real problem for grist mills.

Just one example:

When i walked out to go to work this morning, the sky was full of black and grey smoke. I could actually see flames shooting out the top of the building, and through the windows in the north east corner. Smoke was billowing out of the roof, but the fire seemed contained to the top floors.

Fire bad.

I bet all the firefighters were busy with false alarms at UIC though.

2003-02-07 12:27:33 PM
I also suspect Brimley played a role with it.

I'm curious to know how many submitted links to this story had a Wilford Brimley reference in the fark headline. I know mine did. ("Quaker Oats building in Chicago on fire. Wilford Brimley unavailable for comment.") Any TotalFarkers willing to humor me on this?

Phxtony, I actually saw Hall and Oates in Concert a few months ago. They're remarkably well preserved.

I'm sure people have already made mad dashes to the grocery store in anticipation of a Quaker Oats shortage.

Cinnamon quaker oats squares rock. That's the only quaker cereal I eat. Sometimes I can go for oatmeal, too.

I've always found it funny that our fire commissioner in Chicago is named James Joyce. Whenever he's making comments on TV and in the paper, I expect him to start rambling off about various literary allusions, completely confusing his audience.

2003-02-07 02:50:48 PM
Wow,James Joyce is still alive, only transformed from a writer to the fire commissioner of Chicago... interesting.

Woops... I didn't notice that other Rom Hack was already posted (by the author, no less!) Anyway, the "flaming barrel of oats"

[image from i-mockery.com too old to be available]

In the "Wilford Kong" Rom, is oddly prophetic, methinks... On a completely unrelated topic, the pic of The Bloodhound Gang above makes me wonder... Bloodhound guy... Dave Gahan... Morrissey... Seperated at birth?

[image from 216.136.200.194 too old to be available]

Or at least related? Hm... I'd like to see these three in a reality TV-type show. Could be some funny shiat!

2003-02-07 04:06:26 PM
Hahah you're right Xtrmntr, Wilford Kong is the world's first prophetic rom hack. Still, why would Wilford set fire to his Oats? Perhaps they had him under a spell for all these years and he's finally broke free? Sadly, we may never know the truth...

"Honestly, the Twin Tower thing was going through my mind," said Tommy Rachels (pictured, left), an employee in the building. "I know that sounds sort of crazy, but that just hit me right off the bat, so I put my hot tea down and left the building."

Because we all know that the terrorist see creamy oats as a sin. what a moron
