You need to put a reason in writing to check out the material. Can they refuse if the reason sounds creepy?

Every picture that is distributed is a new violation against the abused child

Simple solution. It's been 30-40 years since the collection was built up and some material may be older. Only distribute pictures of the children who have died in the interim.

As distasteful as defending this feels, it's a valuable tool for any researchers to study the problem. As long as its kept tightly restricted to those researchers only, it shouldn't be a problem.

So far he's the only one who's admitted to accessing the material. Send him up the river.

Hmm, any Danish or Swedish teenage or child series from the 70ies or 80ies that I have seen featured naked children or kids sexual expirementing. Think Disney series, but then with a playing doctor episode. As a child I thought nothing of it, now I can see how that may be used wrong by adults.

That's ridiculous, we don't need to "research" the problem. It's PROBLEM, children are being SEXUALLY ABUSED. The cause of pedos is that they are evil. I don't need research to tell me that. We know what's happening and nobody with a shred of decency wants to research it or investigate these sickos, except the police to send them to jail.

I would be very curious as to why this law forces the library to keep child pornography. The law was passed by politicians, who could probably claim to visit the collection for investigation purposes... I have no proof but it is a very suspicius thing and I don't think I would trust these Swedish politicians around any children.

Well, looking at it dispassionately, if one were to do this on a world scale, spanning all written history, I'd say that, too, should include the smut - even the smut most of us find appalling. The bad stuff as well as the good stuff is part of the range of the human experience and for purposes of archiving the memoirs and collected works of our species nothing should be left out lest we be dishonest with ourselves about what it means to be human.

The right and good does not consist of pretending wrong and evil does not exist but rather in acknowledging that was something to rise above.

Now, this all comes with the caveat that one person's kiddiepr0n is another person's Calvin Klein ad so the other consideration is making sure that the best people make the determination as to what is what.

Well, I don't know and I don't pretend to know but my argument hardly falls apart on this point. I did state that nothing should be excluded so at this point I'm only talking about classifying what is included.

If I was pressed I'd say "best" meant people with the least personal inclinations toward censorship. Already such people exist. Librarians tend to have very broad notions about freedom of the press, expression, etc.

ZAZ: Every picture that is distributed is a new violation against the abused child

This isn't the first time I've heard this talking point, and in all honesty, it sounds politically motivated to a creepy extent.

Methinks most of the effort should be spent on finding where the abuse is actually occurring. This message redirects the focus to a bunch of creepy guys fapping to old pictures of kids that can't be recognized for the adults they are now, and off the REALLY creepy guys that are really abusing real children and taking pictures of it.

I'd actually been involved in busting up a kiddie porn ring, and you know what the difference was between reality and media? In reality, we were going after the abusers. The guys making the stuff. Meaning, you know, the guys raping children. The media seems obsessed, however, with going after the guys fapping to this stuff, who are creepy but far less harmful. They're much easier to go after in the digital age, which I believe is precisely the reason they get all the attention. But c'mon, they're farking peanuts. If someone's downloading (or, in this case, checking out) child porn, that's an indication the creep isn't abusing a real kid. And yeah, they're breaking the law and it's creepy so do go after them, but for cryin' out loud don't spend 90% of your time and attention on the small fry. It's the damn Drug War all over again.

This is true. Knocking out the contemptible sacks of shiat who inflict the abuse and distribute the CP would do far, far more towards gutting the phenomenon.

As far as the "consumers" are concerned, if there is no kid smut to be had, maybe, just maybe, they'll stick to the regular stuff (if they're not rotting in prison).

ZAZ: You need to put a reason in writing to check out the material. Can they refuse if the reason sounds creepy?

I will agree that any violation of another person (child or not) is wrong. For that reason, and not for any supposed innocence of childhood or dirtiness of sex, making kiddie pr0n is wrong. No one still fully capable of believing in the Easter Bunny can possibly give real consent to sex or posing nude. Granted.

However, the "every picture distributed is a new violation..." argument is bordering on magical thinking. By what mechanism is the person violated again? Is not the original violation the crime against that person? If you steal my money and spend it, I am not victimized anew each time the latest recipient spends it himself. Not that the two crimes equate perfectly but we do tend to let reason fly out the window any time kids or sex are involved. When it it involves both, then forget reason altogether.
