Well yes, if you're stupid enough to believe that shooting animals in the head then dumping their carcasses on someone's porch is "protesting."

2009-04-08 12:21:20 PM
Just so everyone knows, Hillsdale, Michigan is major redneckville. The dead animals probably came from a local residents personal collection.

it's trespassing and not very classy, but it's not an assault on free speech, as the subby was implying.

And seeing as it's a college newspaper and a dead goat was involved, PETA will be protesting the protesters tomorrow.

It's not really a stretch to say that this was an implied threat. Intimidation is certainly an assault on free speech.

Hillsdale College? Do they still advertise in conservative magazines like National Review? Ask them about their stance on federally funded financial aid for students.

i think you would find it to be perfectly acceptable to walk into a crowded theatre and say the word "fire" to the person next to you. now, if you were to scream "oh my god, the theatre is on fire, we're all going to die," and there isn't actually a fire, the acceptability of said action would be different.

Hillsdale College...Hillsdale College...why does that ring a bell?

Oh, yeah.

"Hillsdale gained national attention in 1999, when Lissa Jackson Roche, the daughter-in-law of college president George Roche III, committed suicide shortly after alleging that she and her father-in-law had conducted an extramarital affair for over nineteen years. Roche's body was discovered in the college's Slayton Arboretum. George Roche III resigned as president of the college.[4][5] There is still some controversy over whether she committed suicide or was murdered, and a book was written on the tragedy, but there was no conclusive evidence of either the affair or the charge that Roche murdered the woman."

Animal Cruelty =/= Freedom of speech

And if you disagree I will immolate you in protest.

2009-04-08 01:37:40 PM
Free speech is generally taken to mean freedom from suppresion from the GOVERMENT. I'm sorry but it's not freedom from the consequences of your speech especially if your ticking off a bunch of boozed up billy boys with spare animal carcasses.
Additionally, dropping dead animal parts on somenodys porch is certainily criminal but not a violation of your free speech unless it was done under the auspices of a goverment agency. So... no free speech was violated here and none was exercised. Stupid differences of opinion between private citizens is all we have here. Move along.

Burning said effigy on the mall in D.C? Free expression/protest (though possibly a violation of fire ordinances)
Burning said effigy on George Bush's front yard? harassment and intimidation.

I really hope you're intentionally "playing" dumb, because it's a heckuva performance.

But I think sports in general are stupid.

Effigy's are by nature meant to be symbolic.
Sending a pin stuck doll to bush himself would be along the lines of what was done here.

Last time I checked, attempting to intimidate someone because of their opinion is certainly an assault on their free speech.
