We didn't give the Italians 100 million-brazillion dollars because rules are in place that limit initial disaster relief funds to 50K.

This. I would assume that larger amounts of money have to be approved by Congress.

So how many people have been affected?

If it's just one small town, maybe they don't need a full-up international response?

I don't know.

studebaker hoch: The Headless Horseman's Headless Horse

And what did that aid get the tsunami victims? It got them kicked off their land, from the only areas in which they knew how to make a decent living, and herded into poor, dirty, disease infested shantytowns that, as far as I know, still remain to this day. Awesome.

Link please?

Last thing I heard from the tsunami areas were that they'd rebuilt and want the tourists to come back, that tourism is what they need. People were (quite understandably) staying away, and that itself was actually causing them problems.

/First I've heard of people being kicked off land. Of course there is land that is now *missing*....

No linky at the moment, though I could probably dredge one up. It was from Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine. It's a damn good read and highly recommended. It certainly opened my eyes to how supremely farked our government can be/has been.

And that rebuilding? Not so much in Sri Lanka. At least, not for the actual victims. Of all the money that was raised, $80 million went into building mega-resorts along the same area in which small fishing villages were wiped completely away. Residents were forced inland just to receive a small stipend and food rations.

Gotta love the World Bank.

Besides...who should we support...a democracy, or a terrorist culture that thinks suicide bombings are okay?

If Israel was treating your state they way they treat Palestine, I think you'd be singing a different tune. Israel screws these people every way imagineable, and then cries out when some kid hucks a rock and hits somebody.

Italy need no farking help from the US. They have more trained inefficient rescue and help organizations than the US. They were certainly better than the Kathrina Help guys. Due to their joint efforts after the Friaul earthquake in the 70ies, for example, they managed to create a political "Back to Austria" movement there, which certainly would have helped to solve the problems faster. "Heim ins Österreich" will almost certainly solve this earthquake crisis with no US intervention needed.

Why should we have to give them money for being stupid? If they can't learn their lesson from Pompeii, or the fact they live on a fault line, then let them pay for their ignorance.
