*sound of wind whistling in the trees*

Where is everbody?

OK, I'll start. I played with toy guns a lot and haven't shot anybody with a real one yet.

Besides, this would be way cool:

(not what they're giving out, btw)

2003-02-06 01:18:48 PM
It's a good idea, and come on, who didn't play with a toy gun as a kid? Although handing out anything that looks like a gun outside of a school is a strange way to protest..

2003-02-06 01:46:29 PM
Ruby Ridge Elementary? Don't protest with kids in the middle. Not cool.

2003-02-06 02:06:53 PM
When I was a kid we had these guns by a company called Entertek.(spelling?) They where motorized water guns and looked identicle to real guns. They didn't have that orange tip crap.

People get outraged every time a kid gets shot b/c a police officer thought they had a real weapon. It sounds like this bill it trying to diffuse some of the criticism leveled on police officers involved in such incidents. Although the Libertarians have a point, I don't think this toy-gun give out will have the intended effect. After all, Harlem has seen it's share of violence and I doubt parents will be pleased with the idea of their children playing with guns (toy or otherwise).

2003-02-06 03:17:28 PM
We should replace the police department's guns with toy guns, then they would stop shooting kids.

The poster of this article should be whipped for his unoriginal headline

2003-02-06 04:40:56 PM
Those kids probably already have real guns, what's the point?

2003-02-06 04:41:19 PM
Who is Silly Bill and why are they protesting him?

/maybe I should read the article.

Hmm, the text mentions something called an "explaination"? Let's try explanation, Mr. Journalist guy.

Tadpole: Precisely!

2003-02-06 04:42:29 PM
Wouldn't it be funny if one gun that gave out was real.

2003-02-06 04:43:00 PM
Tadpole:Don't protest with kids in the middle? isn't that was all the liberal protestors,i.e. berkeley parents in california, do to their kids? i saw 6 year old carrying 'no war for oil' sign, with mom proudly encouraging the little tyke from behind. so its both ways. plus, toy guns rock.

2003-02-06 04:43:59 PM
"a political group plans to hand out hundreds of toy guns to school children in Harlem Thursday."

The children will then hand the toy guns back and pull out their real guns.

2003-02-06 04:44:03 PM
Bigdork666:yes, it would be. 'bam!your dead!oh shiat, you are.oh well! boogers!!''

It's not a "political group"; it's the Libertarians. They're kind of like Raelians.

DownSouth, I totally remember the overwhelming feeling of coolness those guns gave me as a 9-yr-old. In fact, if I had one now, I'm not sure I could be restrained from running around the office zapping my co-workers.

2003-02-06 04:47:17 PM
I never had a toy gun. I played with a 1902 Winchester lever action. It's now worth about $10,000 according to my old man who biatches we farked it up.

2003-02-06 04:48:37 PM
...things like this make me glad to be a Libertarian!

2003-02-06 04:50:09 PM
Yeah, the Libertarians are just like the Raelians.

Asshat politician says: "If we save one life it's worthwile." (sic)

Shall we extend that logic a little by naming all the stupid laws that will save at least one life? There's no need to do that. What he really means - indeed what every bleeding heart means when they make such statements is "If I get my way it's worthwhile" "If I feel better it's worthwhile"

I'm far more afraid of what the government can and will do to me in the name of keeping me safe than I am from hoodlums carrying guns - real or fake.

"I know what you're thinking: "Did he fire six shots, or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But, being this is a Nerf Dart Gun, the most trendy playgun in the world, and would poke your eye right out, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya punk?"

Filth didn't the Beretta look real?

These guys are heroes. Plain and simple.

A big fvck you to all the mouth-breathing hippie liberals who want to rip up our second amendment. This country will never become like Europe, where defending yourself from a thief or a burgler can get you arrested. Here in America, we believe in something called "justice" and the Libertarians are out to perserve this.

Once again, these guys are es.

Perhaps they should give out Taraka G1 Megatron reissues. I got one for my 20th birthday and IMHO that's the only toy gun worth playing with(but be sure to remove the plastic bullets it shoots as they are a serious choking hazard).

DownSouth, I never saw the Beretta. The two that I had looked like Mac-10s, and yeah, they were pretty convincing.

Gasp, no one biatching about the repeat yet?

Gary Snyder, Manhattan Libertarian Party: "We're not giving them firearms, we're giving them toys that have been used for decades in good fun... Good clean fun."

ARGH...just when ya start to respect the Libertarian party, they go and do something like this. Idiots! Idiots idiots IIIDDDDIIIOOOTTTSSS!!!

Tact, you assholes, TACT!!!

Thanks for bringing up the fond entertech memories. I had the Mack-10 version of them. The thing that sticks out in my mind most about them was that they used batteries to power themselves. (this was pre-supersoaker days).

Needless to say mixing batteries with water guns had its issues, and I can not remember ever seeing one of those guns that did not have all kinds of rust and corrosion in the battery compartment.

Other than that, these guys are HEROES. If a cop shoots some snot nosed kid pointing a fake gun at him now, good. Chances are that kid would have ended up pointing a real gun at one of us a few years down the road.

Armadillo Trainer

Congratulations! You win the "Asshat of the Day" award.

Lemme guess - you're in the middle of some god-forsaken scrub brush infested backwater where guns make the man and the last time someone got shot it had something to do with beer.

In urban settings, where crime and violence is a problem, where people really have to deal with the real impact of guns in a community, this sort of action causes problems. Whether or not these toys are used as subs for the real thing in the commission of a crime is not the point -- there's a concerted effort in most big cities to get the point across that violence is not the answer to conflict, and toy guns blur the line between Legos and Glocks. If a child becomes comfortable with pretending to shoot someone, he probably won't have the hangups he should about actually doing it.

Also, you can buy guns in Europe. I believe you're thinking of Britain.

"Justice" has nothing to do with the ability to shoot someone.

2003-02-06 04:59:24 PM
While they are closer to the sane side on this, I find it offensive that when they spend their money and time to make a social change, it goes to making sure kids have toy guns. I agree that taking away the guns is stupid, but really, are you telling me their aren;t better issues to fight for?

Barring that these people do any other social voluteering or charity, which I highly doubt anyone this passionate about this does, these people are ashiats.

2003-02-06 04:59:45 PM
Silly law but asinine response. A lot of parents just don't want their kids playing with guns and these stupid, jerk head, moron, excrement for brains Libertarians are willing to fark kids to make a point against a few anal retentive politicians.

I used to believe that the Libertarian Party had some valid points, but to do what they're planning to do has changed my mind. They are the drunken barbarian party.

First of all, "liberals" and "conservatives" alike are responsible for various forms of inappropriate control of our own lives...the Drug War is an example.

Here in America, we believe in something called "justice" and the Libertarians are out to perserve this.

True. Too bad they're run by completely self-destructive, counter-productive asshats.

Dammit.

If one of these kids is killed by a cop due to his Halloween customer gun next October, can the libertarians be sued?

Or worse...they would have grown up to be cops.

Agreed! Off the fuc|<ers.

1) Repeat from a long ways back.

2) Violence/war solves plenty of problems. If you don't have enough common sense to realize that and need some famous guy to explain it to you, read The Discourses by Machiavelli. NOT The Prince. The Prince is for newbies.

2003-02-06 05:07:23 PM
Aren't the Libertarians all about personal freedom from meddling parties? How does that fit in with passing out potentially objectionable toys to children without their parents' permission? Maybe the kids are being repressed by their parents and need help liberating themselves with the help of toy guns?

City Councilman David Weprin, Queens (D): "I think we're going to prevent a number of incidents in the future. If we save one life it's worthwile[sic]."

I didn't know people still used that specious argument. Oh right, this from the city where the cops shoot you for having a shiny candy bar.
