One of the guys in my old unit spent three years "on the trail" as an Army Drill Sergeant at Fort Knox, Kentucky, training new Cavalry Scouts.

Normally, something like this would just be a "smoke session," where you'd get taken out behind the Dining Facility and PTed until you puked. Front-Back-Gos* was his weapon of choice.

However, he said by the end of about week one or two, he can tell which guys are completely untrainable and worthless. Not the guys who just needed their edges ground down and learn discipline, the ones who are completely farking untrainable. Or mentally unstable, dangerous, criminal, mentally incompetent, etc.

They usually try to get them kicked out on a "Failure to Adapt" discharge, but if they're hurting for numbers and the end of the fiscal year is coming up, the officers might turn down the Drill Sgt's request and tell them to give the kid another chance.

So the Drill Sgt's bide their time and wait for him to screw up to the point it's considered criminal, then offer them the "discharge in lieu of court martial."

He's goaded a few douchebags into taking a swing at him, and then pops them for "Assaulting a Non-Commissioned Officer" which IIRC, the maximum penalty is 10 years confinement.

They're usually eager to take the "discharge in lieu of court martial" as opposed to ten years of getting cornholed in Fort Leavenworth.

*You yell "Front" the recruit has to do push-ups, "Back" he gets on his back and does flutter kicks. "Go" is run in place. I've seen it used where there's only a few seconds in between commands. The actual exercises aren't bad, it's the getting up and getting back down that sucks.
