"'We're not stupid,' added Wiggins."

That's a point that could be fiercely debated . . . but I gotta admit, I'd love to do this.

Why not take the skinheads bowling instead? ;)

2003-02-06 08:54:46 AM
lol I always wanted to drop a bowling ball off an airplane

2003-02-06 08:55:49 AM
I GOT IT!!!

2003-02-06 08:56:09 AM
Why don't we drop them on France?

hmm they better release the video of these experiments if they do go through with it. Though I believe the balls would explode.

2003-02-06 08:58:25 AM
Come on, you have to start small. Have the astronauts spit first (ya know to see if it is "safe"), then drop penneys, then bowling balls. But by that time the man will have put up fences like he always dows.

Wiggins said: 'Everyone likes to drop things from planes.'

Why, HELL YES!!!!

Not that this would not be amusing to see, but couldn't they simply fire a ball at the ground using a cannon-like device to determine if something would punch through? I'm thinking that it could probably be figured out mathmatically as well.

As Wiggins said: 'Everyone likes to drop things from planes.'

I'd like to be able to drop things from planes.

This would be a really cool experiment... maybe it could get a little out of hand and they could drop watermelons, or turkeys...

With God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

My point being... I think they just want to do this to see a bowling ball dropped from an airplane. I think they are reaching by saying it is for science.

2003-02-06 09:01:12 AM
Didn't we just do this with the Columbia shuttle?

2003-02-06 09:01:42 AM
Lets try it with members of PETA first.

2003-02-06 09:01:51 AM
ine - Is that some type of new leet speak?

2003-02-06 09:04:18 AM
But it won't reach the same temperature.
You'd think that would be important.

2003-02-06 09:04:59 AM
I think dropping a car from the plane would have more scientific value.

2003-02-06 09:08:54 AM
For some reason this reminds me of the Nature guy from UHF that was throwing dogs out of windows to see if they could fly....

Ohh yeah and turtles are nature's suction cup.

2003-02-06 09:08:58 AM
On saturday morning before hearing about Columbia, I was telling the wife that we should drop bowling balls, cars, people, etc from space and watch the light show as the re-enter the eaths atmosphere.

I'm always doing crap like that. The sniper in Washington started right after I said that there are too many people on earth and that we should start culling members of society, possibly Wal-Mart shoppers.

I'll be quiet now.

Life imitates Dave Barry:

If you are a regular reader of this column, you know that I make it my business to report on Stuff That Guys Do.

A good example is the sport of snowplow hockey, in which guys driving trucks use their snowplow blades to knock a bowling ball past trucks driven by opposing guys.

This is not to be confused with car bowling, in which guys in low-flying airplanes try to drop bowling balls onto junked cars. I've also reported on guys going off...

"Unfortunately, we found nothing - mainly because we didn't really know what we were looking for. "

I think that about sums up their idea entirely.

sheer brilliance.

Do meteors have little holes like where your fingers go in a bowling ball? If they don't then this experiment is doomed from the start..DOOMED!

2003-02-06 09:10:31 AM
On the converse, replacing bowling balls with airplanes greatly increases bowling scores.

(because they are much larger than bowling balls)

blah

2003-02-06 09:12:48 AM
Maybe I can save them some time. Regardless of the height from which you drop them, they will not fly.

2003-02-06 09:15:19 AM
They seriously need to get DAVID LETTERMAN on-board for this one.

2003-02-06 09:15:20 AM
Man, the idea of participating in an experiment like this makes me wish I'd majored in Physics. Sounds like fun.

2003-02-06 09:15:28 AM
I think they are just doing it for fun. I suspect we will see some printer carcasses too. "What do you mean? PC LOAD LETTER!"

2003-02-06 09:18:36 AM
office space!

What do you mean? PC LOAD LETTER!?! WHAT THE SHIAT IS THAT?!?!

whats up with http://www.fark.ru? is that run by someone here? or what?

2003-02-06 09:21:58 AM
If they fill those bowling balls with cash they can drop them in my backyard.

2003-02-06 09:24:46 AM
Bowling Ball catchers wanted.

2003-02-06 09:24:51 AM
They should start small, like dropping silly putty from a car park roof

R1niceboy: Uh-oh. I just made a comment to a friend that it would be good to see grand island, nebraska suffer an anthrax attack tomorrow....

Man, where do i sign up for that job?

2003-02-06 09:26:24 AM

I think dropping a car from the plane would have more scientific value

If not it'll make a great Blues Brothers III.

We thought about droping a meteor for realisim... but it might get lost....

Um.... I vote NO for dropping anything by these people...

"Hey Bob, we dropped 50 bowling balls but can only account for 18 of em".....

God and these asshats make 5 times more money than I do.... sad.

Uh-oh. I just made a comment to a friend that it would be good to see grand island, nebraska suffer an anthrax attack tomorrow....

If you were to say that the population of Grand Island needs a wake up call, and that an Anthrax attack would do just that, It might just happen.

Personally, I would mind as long as it happens as I'm out of town. It's not a wonderful place.

actual footage of test run:

2003-02-06 09:33:06 AM
mmmm....cookies....

2003-02-06 09:33:10 AM
As a physics major and a male, I think this is a great idea. I also suggest yard darts, marbles, those big foam aiplanes, and whatever else they can drag up there to drop. Then there was the tests they conducted while developing penetrator bombs for the first gulf war........interesting results.

2003-02-06 09:34:31 AM
I don't think a meteor has the same density as a liquid -injected, lead core, solid piece of plastic composite.

2003-02-06 09:34:32 AM
lets try this again, shall we:

2003-02-06 09:36:39 AM
Ooo Ooo! I know!
Lets put some explsosives in a "package", and this "package" will "detonate" upon "impact" when dropped out of an "airplane".

Oh what? Its been done? BEH!

2003-02-06 09:38:23 AM
Lets have some real fun and pull out all the stops. Drop a few cars and see how they fair.

/nothing

2003-02-06 09:40:49 AM
Crikey! Sounds like a hoot. But I really wanna see is what would happen if a high altitude C-130 carying a full load of Maxi Pads had to drop their load. Whee!

2003-02-06 09:41:43 AM
Let's drop scientists and they take measurements and stuff, right up until the point they go splat! TNN can base a new show on it!

2003-02-06 09:50:57 AM
Read Jimmy Buffet's "A Pirate's Life at Fifty". He explains that when planning something like this it is better to beg forgiveness after the fact than, to seek permission before.

/off to Maragritaville.

Utah needs all the help they can get to kill kittens.
