Procedural Texture: But it's about football.

Exactly. Hooray for tired-ass "sports is life" metaphors where a lot of people who ought to know better pretend that crap matters.

There's a reason the ratings are in the toilet. Because only failed old ex-jock "Uncle Rico" types watch so they can live vicariously through the show, and remember when they were almost cool for a year.

Wrong-o. Good job not watching it, that second sentence is so unfounded it's practically proof positive you've never seen an episode.

Tackle football, not twinkle toes "NO TOUCHING MEANIE!" prancing, 40 misses and 2 scores per game football

Ohhh, so Rugby with body armor and helmets because they're wusses, and a good long breather in between each play because they're too fat to play a real sport. Gotcha.

/If that's the best show I'm not watching, I'm canceling my TV

I believe the correct nomenclature is 'armoured wankball'.

Its good, but I dont watch it. After the Landry plot misstep, I had a hard time getting back into it. Maybe on DVD.

The best show on TV you're not watching get two more seasons for you to not watch it

Not only am I not watching "Friday Night Lights", I am also not watching "Supernanny", "Flashpoint", or "Dollhouse".

I'm a multi-tasker.

/I won't be pressured into not watching what everybody else is not watching. I'll not watch what nobody else is not watching.

It may be a great series, but the guy who wrote the book is a complete douchewank.

I've just finished the first season, and I was surprised at how good it was. While I'm a fan of football, it's really sort of peripheral to what drives the show. My girlfriend got me into it, and she loathes football.

MaxxLarge: There's a reason the ratings are in the toilet. Because only failed old ex-jock "Uncle Rico" types watch so they can live vicariously through the show, and remember when they were almost cool for a year.

I like the "I have never seen an episode, yet know what I'm talking about" mentality, though. Hooray for that. I'm actually having trouble picturing the "Uncle Rico" type watching it.

Yes, because I should spent my time watching a show about how hard it is to be the douchebags I hated in high school.

I'll keep torrenting Dollhouse, thank you very much.

/Thought the movie was complete crap - why the hell would I watch a weekly dose of it?

2009-03-31 06:59:12 AM
I watched it the first six weeks. Determined it was a soap opera with a high school football backdrop, involving some of the adults surrounding the football team as well. Watched the stud quarterback get taken out in the series opener, correctly predicted the response of the runningback, back-up qb and qb-girlfriend. Decided it was not my cup of tea. I gather there's a hard-core audience who loves it...good for them. Not gonna watch it.

/You've gotten three seasons, Firefly didn't even get one. Be grateful.

I was hoping TFA would be about "Life." But I guess I'm the only one who watches or likes that one. Sucks that it's on at the same time as Lost. Thank god for the ol' Hulu.

If rugby players are so tough and athletic as compared to football players, you'd think that at least some of them would come to the U.S. and cash in on that superior ability. Strangely, there does not seem to be any empirical evidence of that. Oh, except for one or two punters, which happens to be the whiniest, cry-babiest, most soccer-player-like position in the game.

The non-American football is just a slow paced version of hockey. Seriously, just put hockey on in slow motion and it's a soccer game. Just, in you head, replace the fights with diving.

DemonEater: hhh, so Rugby with body armor and helmets because they're wusses

Wusses? Rugby players cuddle each other down to the ground. Compared to football, they're barely touching each other. The pads don't provide protection- well, they do, but it's part of an escalation. They wear pads so they don't get hurt as much so they hit harder because the pads are protecting them so they get hurt so they wear more pads so they hit harder...

Pfft, whatever, Bruce Poofterton of the Melbourne Silly Nannies could totally take a padless, full-speed, head-on hit from Osi Umenyiora and bounce up immediately, whereas poor Osi would be a sad, broken man afterward.

THIS...Rugby players (tough as they are)or any unpadded person, would drop dead from some of the collisions that take place regularly in 'hand-eggball'. Even high-school, let alone college or pro.

I feel obligated everytime this gets touted to state how much I hate hate HATE that show! I've watched the whole first season, because a friend insisted, and it barely got a few chuckles. Lame stereotyping of nerds thats still safe enough for Middle America to laugh at (and they'll know when to when the laugh track cues them too).
Sorry, but I just do not get it, and I get sick of everyone recommending it to me.

In other news, the tough guy on FNL is playing Gambit in about a month! Woo!

The best show I'm not watching is a soap opera?

I mean, c'mon, if Galactica couldn't keep my interest, and it was a soap opera in SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE, how can a soap opera in a US high school really be considered quality TV?

Great big fat THIS.
It's not nerd humour. It's laughing AT stereotypical nerds - nerds who, except for the really sad sacks at star trek conventions, don't really exist.

When I finally watched the movie several years ago I was going insane about how farking horrible it was and wanted to punch everyone in the room for making me sit through that piece of shiat.

The show..yeah..not much better.

Sorry, can't bring it up a work, but will at home. I'm sure it is a killer hit. I've seen some in rugby and Aussie rules, but I still don't think it compares (play after play after play) to the collisions in eggball.

My wife watches Friday Night Lights which should gave me a clue it's not about football. It's very much on-par with everything else she watches - grey's anatomy, one tree hill, brothers and sisters, private practice; in other words, it's a crappy soap opera.

I think you 2 just have a little trouble grasping the concept of "sitcom". Basically, you're criticizing the sitcom for being a sitcom. The laugh track, stereotypes and safeness of the jokes are all defining charateristics of sitcoms. Instead of saying "I hate BBT" just say I hate sitcoms because that's what you really mean. In fact, the only thing you missed was complaining about how everything always ends up back to normal at the end of the episode.
