My vote for best athlete in the animal kingdom is a leopard. Any animal that can kill and animal twice its own size AND drag it up in a tree is bad ass in my book.

I had a Jack Russel. Awesome little dog, but they are hyper. They require lots of exercise or the stuff in your house will get destroyed.

Oldiron_79: My vote for best athlete in the animal kingdom is a leopard. Any animal that can kill and animal twice its own size AND drag it up in a tree is bad ass in my book.

My Grandpa used to raise goats on his hobby farm on the western slope of Colorado. He once had a mountian lion drag a 150lb male goat over a 6 foot fence. Not sure how big the mountian lion was but the DNR estimated it was a 75-100lb female by the tracks. It wasn't twice the size or up a tree but pretty impressive none the less.

The DNR was out because the government pays for any livestock the mountian lions take. My grandpa got $200 for the goat and went and bought another one for $150. Same thing happened to a female goat a few weeks later. Grandpa made a reasonable profit from feeding the mountian lions that year.

One of my Boxers died of old age last year... It's a miracle she lived to 11 with a myriad of Boxer ailments including cardiomyopathy. She was the happiest dog in the world. Good memories.

Concur.

blicero: Hey, I thought it was a bidet.

Ha... good one.

I have a Schipperke. If you want the athleticism and smarts of a Parson Russel Terrier (they're not actually "Jack Russel" anymore evidently) without the unbridled insanity... a Schip is a good way to go. You need to be a diligent trainer and smarter than the dog, however.

11 1/2 pounds (they get up to ~20lb), faster than a border collie, corners like Barry Sanders, only barks when there's someone approaching the door, no grooming required. They're even good with kids, although a disproportionate number of black people are terrified of her. Weird.

I know a JRT very much like this. Does the same thing when out on a kayak with his owner, jumps in after minnows. Then he'd swim over to my kayak, towing his owner since I had dog goodies in my pocket for my own dog:

He's now 13 and doing very well.

Schips are stubborn that's for sure. My trainer had them for many years and went to the highest levels of obedience competition with them. Very cool little dogs.

Parson Russell is a recent example of AKC breed politics. They are only called Parson Russells when they are AKC registered. With all other registries, such as UKC, and their own JRT club that predates AKC acceptance, they are still Jack Russells.

The current Parson Russell "parent" breed club for AKC is a splinter group that sought AKC recognition while the rest of the group did not want that recognition. AKC recognition can lead to many changes in a breed (show vs working types) as well increasing popularity with puppy mills. Same thing happened to Border Collies and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I think Australian Shepherds too maybe.

What I really want to know is why the name change from Jack to Parson, that's not usual in these situations.

Brian Boitano? No wait, he always tried to get in bed with me - although the toilet drinking part fits...

Ah, yes the Jack Russel Terroists. Imagine a male German Shepherd who weighed over 100 pounds. Now imagine a female JRT he could devour in about two bites. Thumper (the JRT) thought she was bigger than Caesar (my GSD). Pathetically she convinced Caesar that was true.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I miss my Chow. 15 years old, and he had a seizure. Had to put him down at the vet. Took it pretty hard. Gooooood dog.
