Looks like "being peeled with a cheese grater and dipped in rubbing alcohol" would be more fun than teh convention!

Most attendees prefer to just drink the stuff in the normal way, actually. It's a relaxed atmosphere, you can kinda tell.

I've enjoyed Notacon, and even got Drew to autograph my Domo-kun. If you can make it, I highly recommend going.

TiltedKilt: Shotacon?

A few years ago, during the Notacon weekend, the hotel was homebase for some sort of national jumproping competition for middle school girls. Not as funny as the Cosplay / Shmoocon overlap, but funny nonetheless.

Notacon's always a good time :)

I'll be there as usual...

Sorry, Drew, I promised myself I'd never go to the pit of despair known as Ohio ever again. Even for you.

2009-03-30 03:47:25 PM
Come on down to Columbus while you're around Ohio.

We can organize a kickball tourney on the statehouse lawn.

*hee*

You know what the best thing to do in Ohio is?

To pack your shiate up and leave Ohio that's what.

We like to quip that you get more out of Notacon because it's in Ohio, and there's nothing worthwhile to do outside the hotel, so you aren't tempted to miss any talks or events.

See? It's a feature! Also, Ohio's awfully affordable. Compare our room rates to almost anywhere else.

2009-03-30 04:06:39 PM
I'm under 21, is this going to be an issue?

yes... so far, we have the pits of earth, namely, D.C., Indiana, and Detroit trying to slam Ohio. Its not April Fools yet, fellas.

Awesome. If I can arrange a sitter for the kids (because I'm going to drag my non-Farker husband with me, so he can finally see why we're funnier than Digg), I'm so there!

CavalierEternal: I'm under 21, is this going to be an issue?

I was at the hotel bar Saturday night drinking a Sprite, and they didn't card me upon entry. But then, I don't look under-21 either. They don't seem set up to card people as they enter, anyway.

The bar is also just off the lobby, and there will probably be conversations spilling out into the common areas, if you're averse to bars in general.

Notacon itself is totally cool with any age as long as you're mature enough to run around unsupervised. (In my experience, this is only loosely correlated with chronological age.) The one provision is that if you're running around in conference areas with alcohol, it had better have come from the hotel bar. (One year, a presenter bought a whole bottle of liquor from the hotel bar, so he could drink from it on stage during his talk.)

spike_flatbush: C'mon, Cleveland is rough! How about Lakewood? I don't need my GAT or Bulletproof vest in Lakewood!

We did Lakewood the last time. Weren't you there?

Although, yeah, I'd rather have it be in Lakewood again. But this is part of a convention-esque event at a hotel, and Lakewood doesn't seem to have any hotels big enough to host a convention.

Thrag: Dental_FlossTycoon: You know what the best thing to do in Ohio is?

Beachland>Grog Shop.

I like the Grog, but the Beachland is just easier to get to and... I think it's just nicer.

I had the last one in Lakewood and the one before in Tremont. The party part of Notacon is at the Hotel since they are already there so it just makes all kinds of sense.

I usually have my Fark parties in October so look for that one also if you are interested

Blast! I was invited up to Notacon by one of the speakers (not that I think he likes me all that much, but I'm dating his cousin and I think he felt obligated) and I REALLY wanted to go-- mainly to see Blockparty and observe all of the demoscene weirdness.

So now I find out that I would have had a chance to attack and noogie Drew, a chance that will now be gone forever. Fooey. Fooey with microwaved taco goo fooey. I hate being poor.

It's the third weekend into school at Ohio State and the last two, I've been away at Dallas and home for Easter. No thanks.

There will probably be a Columbus Fark Party soon. Red, White, and Boom anyone?

well, at worst, this thread gave you an opportunity to re-use that same photo, and exact same comment that you posted, during the last Fark party.

There's a free preview for the con on Thursday evening, starting at 7:00. Come hang out for a while, meet some of the speakers, maybe lend a hand with setup if you want to come earlier. If you find yourself interested in the con (and you will), registering during the preview will get you 10% off the at-the-door price.

Not many people showed up last year - I think less than ten. C'mon folks, it's a chance to meet other NeO-ites who are just as cool (or geeky) as you!

Ooo. If you happen to work in that building with the massive farm of cooling equipment on the roof, which I suspect houses way more servers and bandwidth than its neighbors, definitely get in touch! (eip.) We've secured ourselves a decent DSL connection for the weekend, because we know we'll crush the hotel's Wayport T1, but another connection would give us enough upload bandwidth to stream video, which I'd really like to try.

If you just meant "help setting anything up" like deploying A/V equipment and stuff, there's definitely a need for that too. Swing by for the preview (as the good Professor said), and mention to a Notacon staffer that you'd like to help with something.

Honestly, if you want to get started right now, go read the speakers^, events^, and Blockparty^ pages, and think of a few local people who need to know this is happening. Get the word out; it's a really fun weekend, and advertising/publicity is really the area we need the most help with.
