Let the Yanks have their fun. They're a country in decline - kinda like a large turd being flushed down the toilet. (Hopefully, they won't clog it).

2009-03-28 12:29:06 PM
Eh?

2009-03-28 12:30:51 PM
If you have to resort to making fun of Canada, you've pretty much failed.

2009-03-28 12:31:17 PM
Yea, guys, that U.S. is really racist, eh.

Canuckistan?

What about the dirty, dirty, dirty Swiss? Structurally imperfect cheese, their precision machinery but inability to come up with a knife that is functional without having thumbnails of steel, chocolates and cocoa, but laced with lies and poison? Talk to me about their banking practices and chalets to hide the malfeasance and evil of the world, and an army of quiet citizen soldiers who can't decide on a single national language. No, the Swiss are a dirty nasty people, lying in wait in Europa, lying in wait in their mountain fortresses, armed with doom and suffering for all...

Just becareful when you turn off the lights. There may be a Canadian in the room. We don't want to scare the poor fellow.

2009-03-28 12:32:28 PM
You can call Canadians stupid or lazy and few people would get offended because it's really not true. Now, if you said those things about black people, for example...

Political correctness has made almost every other ethnicity off-limits

Speaking as a White Hetrosexual Male, I beg to differ.

2009-03-28 12:33:35 PM
Still telling jokes about Kentucky.

2009-03-28 12:33:43 PM
Yeah, the Southern/Midwestern hillbilly population begs to differ. Last time I checked it was still ok, even encouraged, to make fun of that group. Sorry Canada.

2009-03-28 12:34:20 PM
Aw, it's cute that Canadians have realized that people of other countries often make jokes about their neighbors.

I'm just glad that Canadians don't make jokes about Americans...

Nationality != Ethnicity

2009-03-28 12:34:50 PM
"Canadian" is a nationality, not an ethnicity.

2009-03-28 12:34:59 PM
I'm not your buddy, fwiend.

2009-03-28 12:35:12 PM
That country gave us Alex Trebek, Michael J. Fox, Bryan Adams and Robin Sparkles. We should be worshipping them, not making fun.

Ethnicity?

ORLY?

We don't make jokes about Americans. We report the news. It just happens to have a punchline involving Americans.

:-)

Like did I ever tell you the one about the worlds greatest superpower pissing away their future so every Home Depot employee and their brother could own a $400,000 home on 50 year variable rate mortgages?

Ooooh boy, that one is a jim-dandy fine joke.

2009-03-28 12:36:33 PM
Americans make fun of Canada because we view them as what we would be were we not a super-power. So, hopefully after the chaos of our transition out of that role, we'll end up a lot like them.

Another, historical, possibility is that since we REALLY wanted Canada to join the revolution, and they didn't, we started to deride them. Perhaps that that thread has propagated through our national psyche.

They gave us Celine Dion as well, I would say she more than cancels them out

Relax people. Not one shred of evidence exists to suggest that life is serious.

Could it actually be that the once mighty United States is developing an inferiority complex???

Um, Canada was a province of Britain at the time. It would have been really awkward... :-) Plus it's a little hard to rebel when your entire community is made up of British soldiers...

Took us another 100 years or so to finally get to the point where only one person here talks to the head of state.

Can't wait till we get rid of the GG though... useless farking position ever...

That group is actually Atheists.

NO ONE respects our right to not believe.

You should read the Pugh religion polls.
We are the most hated, ad least trusted group in the country/world.

Despite the fact, that we tend to be better educated, and better equipped to observe and analyze the real world around us, without having to invoke magic.

Atheists are the one group that it IS socially acceptable to ridicule.

/America is still in the thrall of ignorant religionists.

And what was America before the revolution?

Some people make fun of Canadians. More people make fun of Americans. Go anywhere in the world and you will hear all kinds of bad things about Americans and all kinds of good things about Americans. Go anywhere in the world and ask about Canada and you'll get silence. Nothing against Canada, they just aren't on most people's minds.

They released Celine Dion on the world.
That's worse than farting in the car with the windows up.

Otackle72: Political correctness has made almost every other ethnicity off-limits

Came in to say the same.

We can be called "white boy" on sit-coms and it seems to be acceptable.

Being a white male who went to a predominately black school I can say with the utmost certainty that "white boy" is used towards us in the same context that the N word is used towards African Americans.

I thought fatties were still fair game?

Sure, the last group that can be made fun of, except lawyers, politicians, sportsmen, idiots, movie stars, businessmen, children, teenagers, old people, geeks, jocks, emos, rock stars, bad drivers, media figures, ...

I'm not sure his conclusions about Canadian comedy are correct. All the really funny people have to go to the states to get jobs as we don't really have an entertainment industry here.

So it's not so much that these "great Canadian comics" are bringing funny to America, but rather there's nothing for them here.

And what we get left with is our "real" national sense of humour. The crap that is Air Farce, Rick Mercer, and Little Mosque on the Prairie. Mostly harmless fluff.

2009-03-28 12:41:25 PM
and I thought it was because it was fun to make fun of people from Canaduh.

And most of it is true.

I bet you won't.

Yes, ethnicity, else you wouldn't identify us as a group. Our current use of the word is yet another example of skewed meaning. This is how intent is lost.

America was british colonies, but your towns were not made up of British soldiers. They were, in many cases, people born in the Americas.

Whereas in Canada [where landing points for the British were] we were essentially for lack of a better term, overrun with them.

Not only that, but the British weren't all the boogey man people made them out to be. They killed them pesky natives, and kept the french at bay.

2009-03-28 12:45:52 PM
The thing to remember as the economic crisis deepens is that desperate times call for desperate measures. How badly do you want to irritate your well armed, violent neighbors to the south while we're looking for more natural resources like oil, lumber, beer and Canadian women?

But the British were keeping us from making a game called football that barely uses our feet! And we were sick of tea. Was it so much to ask for some coffee?
