Not only do crabs suffer pain, a new study found, but they retain a memory of it (assuming they aren't already dead on your dinner plate).

Okay, thanks for that...

The scientists say its time for new laws to consider the suffering of all crustaceans.

...but that doesn't necessarily follow. The pain would be transitory and result in death, same as with other delicious food animals.

I don't see why this matters. Most things we eat feel pain, why should we care?

Kitten pie for dinner.

I don't get it. I'm pretty sure the cow feels pain, too, but that won't stop me from having a nice big slutty burger for lunch.

Are those pitchers of iced tea with straws in them? Where did they have storage space in the mobile home for so many pitchers?

The Mike's Hard Lemonade was being drank by the girl who decided to order chicken fingers instead of eating "nasty crabs", so there's no use explaining that one.
Miller Lite, and any other piss-water beer is perfect for eating crabs. You can't taste it due to the rock salt, but it rinses your mouth out, and it gets you plenty drunk.

Curse you and your logic! Stop messing with my beer-snobbiness!

I think the author of this article is confused about what "pain" means. The problem is that the behavior here - autonomic avoidance of injury - evolved long before consciousness of that injury ever did. The brain of a crab isn't sophisticated to react in any but an autonomic fashion.

Crabs and other crustaceans are just little Turing machines, lacking any consciousness (self-reflective or not) sufficient to talk about them feeling anything.

I should refer to it by it's proper name, Oklahoma Champagne.

Crabs are yummy. So are lobsters. I have no problem with killing either. Hell, if beef tasted better if you poked the cow's eye out with a stick and flayed it alive, I'd ask where I can get a few steaks.

/Evolved as an omnivore. What do you think the sharp canines are for?

2009-03-27 01:30:24 PM
So what? WTF does it matter if they can supposedly remember pain? You can't remember shiat if your dead. Humane methods killing are for beloved family pets, not food.

2009-03-27 01:30:42 PM
If feeling a little pain is the worst thing that happens to a crab when it hits the boiling water, it can count itself lucky.

I mean, most of them go on to be killed and eaten.

Fear and pain makes meat taste better. Bunnies fear nothing, hence they are barely edible...except when made from chocolate.

Does anyone remember the lobster incident on one of the morning shows? A guest chef took a live lobster and hacked it into pieces with a cleaver, the limbs kind of waving around. I thought the host was going to pass out. Looked lovely once it was sauteed.

There is no possibility that any pain research is going to make me stop eating crabs, but if these guys are doing good science that tells us how to better treat animals prior to eating them, that seems valuable.

So do cows, lamb, fish and every other goddamned thing on my plate, but I am not going to stop eating meat because it bothers the poor critters.

TFA:

The study involved using wires to deliver shocks to the bellies of hermit crabs, which, being hermits, often take up residence in left-behind mollusc shells.

Fail study is fail. Hermit crabs are not true crabs. They are not even closely related to true crabs. Hell, they're about as related to crabs as spiders and bugs are. If they wanted to test crabs, why didn't they use real crabs instead of something that is a crab in name only?

I'm sure that I'd feel plenty of pain if I got eaten by a lion. But I'd understand. It's the food chain, people. You'll get over it.

Remember you steam Lobsters you don't boil them. You are just trying to cook them not drown them.

If it's an issue then you can anesthetize my crabs before you cook them. Or my cows or whatever. I'm still gonna eat 'em. Scientists have shown plants "feel pain." If we don't eat things that feel pain then we don't eat unless we eat only milk and fertilized eggs or maybe soups made of boiled dead skin and hair that have flaked off of something. Of course then we risk killing bacteria that may feel pain.
