"One protester calls the digs "an impossibly swanky loft that none of my peers would be able to afford.""

Anyone who uses the word "peers" should be locked up. As should journalists who use the word "gentrification" in an article.

The Real World sucks

take me away plz
2001-09-04 10:31:58 AM
Uh oh, here come the MTV thought police. Everyone, put on your foil hats, quick!
2001-09-04 10:38:01 AM
Whatever happend to the days when "MTV" meant MUSIC television??? I've got your "Real World"... right in my pants.
2001-09-04 10:38:02 AM
Maybe if they protest enough MTV won't waste everyone's time with a new one. MTV has sucked any way since they took Beavis and Butthead off the air.

2001-09-04 10:38:27 AM
Damn. They'd better lock me up then. i've been saying that for years.
2001-09-04 10:38:53 AM
Anyone who watches that drivel knows it isn't the REAL world.
bah and feh.
2001-09-04 10:44:18 AM
I'll second that "feh" and raise you a "vah!".
2001-09-04 10:49:23 AM
The bike mechanic wants to protest the WTO? What, is Shimano so difficult to work with that he needs a three-speed?

As for the whole MTV vs. Gentrification thing: Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out.
2001-09-04 10:49:58 AM
I doubt that people know it's not the real world. Maybe they think they know, but eventually the images get to them and they feel less cool than these pricks and they get a sudden compulsion to spend lots of money on stupid products. That's how the stupid products industry works. It's easy to say they should learn to defend themselves mentally, or else they deserve to get ripped off, but it's not easy when the ad world is their whole picture of society.
2001-09-04 10:50:59 AM
Oh yeah, and we see how Viacom treats the opposing viewpoint.
2001-09-04 11:10:31 AM
I think we should lock up some MTV programmers...for false advertising! I'm with Richard II...last I knew MTV was Music Television. It's no wonder everyone thinks rock and roll died in the nineties. They got rid of Headbanger's Ball and all other good videos followed! Fark the Real World! Fark it all to heck!! (MTV X is pretty cool though!)
2001-09-04 11:13:41 AM
How dare there be a shooting outside the Real World house! The shooter and the victim(s) should both be arrested.
2001-09-04 11:25:58 AM
As silly and stupid as I think these Anarcho-American protester are, I really am enjoying this. The ironic thing is that these young, alternative/hipster types are the people that started the whole gentrification of Wicker Park and Bucktown in the first place. Without them, it would be just another Logan Square.
2001-09-04 11:27:33 AM
I'm going to air my grievances by sending them a note via a brick thru the window.
2001-09-04 11:33:14 AM
Anyone else remember when MTV started? When they played MUSIC? Not farking stupid game shows and bullshiat fantasy/reality shows?

Too bad it's turned into a network for the stupid-something generation.

Where're JJ Jackson and Martha Quinn when you really need them?

MTV, you suck. So does Viacom.

The Real World Sucks

MTV Sucks

-he who stacks pork
2001-09-04 12:18:13 PM
MTVs shows can goto hell and take their Limp Bizkit with them.
2001-09-04 12:21:04 PM
I am sooo glad that these people are spending all this energy talking about MTV instead of anything silly, like poor people starving to death, in this country or others; or even multi-national corporations abusing their power. All of this attention on this show will have SUCH a bad effect on it's rating. I bet all of those MTV executives are all crying and shaking in their boots at the thought of all of these people talking about thier show. After it has been on the news that people were murdered right outside the building, and protesters threw stuff through the windows. No one will want to watch stuff like that.

GOD people can be such idiots.
2001-09-04 12:23:41 PM
2001-09-04 12:33:44 PM
Rebbic, that reminds me. I'm starving! Time for lunch.
2001-09-04 12:35:49 PM
Well, at least I say MTV sucks instead of Real World Sucks. Ooops, I just said it.
2001-09-04 12:37:38 PM
Protestors suck.

Get a job you damn hippies!
2001-09-04 12:51:49 PM
The show is about "The Real World", right? Well, I think the brick throwing protests and such are part of the cast members'real world, so they should DEAL WITH IT ON CAMERA!
2001-09-04 12:53:52 PM
The Real World doesn't suck, it BLOWS.
2001-09-04 12:58:13 PM
I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on Quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go
2001-09-04 01:00:51 PM
MTV will milk this free publicity for all that it's worth and make it a focal point of the show when it airs. I think it's funny that the people who are siding with MTV is the owner of the local coffee house that the cast members and film crew frequent. Go figure, he gets free publicity too, so of course he doesn't want MTV to go away.

All that aside, if they're throwing bricks and creating graffiti, then they're breaking the law. Doesn't matter that the target is "The Real World". The fact that they suck and are unpopular and unrealistic doesn't matter.
2001-09-04 01:02:35 PM
new concept idea:

get 1 white suburban frat boy, 1 prissy prom queen, 1 militant roots black fellow, 1 flaming homo, 1 fresh impressionable virgin girl, 1 ball of confussion drama queen
and 1 biatch. now put them in a city with no money, no food, and no job and in seperate apartments. each has no camera crew following them or corparate sponsors . every now and then, beat them up, steal there stuff, make them have a bad day. and we could call it "Get a life, you stupid cookie cut mousekittere of corarate puppet farks"

2001-09-04 01:17:48 PM
MTV sucks

What's the penalty for a MARQUEED mtv sucks?
2001-09-04 01:27:17 PM
Come get me, MTV!
2001-09-04 01:31:01 PM
Rebbic: Nice try but, we haven't seen
[image from too old to be available]
since her profile was hacked.
2001-09-04 01:48:27 PM
"Is dis BRICK real enough for youse?"
2001-09-04 03:02:46 PM
Protestors are part of the real world. MTV can go suck Chick's festering herpes crusted tallywacker.
2001-09-04 03:27:21 PM
Diogenes, I'll see your "vah!" and raise you a "pouah!"
2001-09-04 03:59:06 PM
Rebbic: Gentrification of your neighborhood is right in your face, its worthy of protesting. Not to mention how do you know that these people aren't involved in charity to begin with. Usually the vocal protesters have a long list of protesting experience, most Chicagoans wouldn't get off the couch to make a statement.

I can't see whats more real than protest. MTV could milk this but for some reason if you bring a camera crew out in public you get to suspend the constitution and get people arrested because "they're in your shot and saying things."

MTV could have avoided this whole situation by putting them in a place that isn't a social hotspot. But no, MTV wanted to be near the trendy/artist types who have been biatching about gentrification for years and now have a national outlet for their complaints.

MTV should deal with it. Welcome to Chicago.
2001-09-04 04:01:14 PM
hey, when did rei's profile get hacked? that's pretty messed up. someone was sharp enough to figure out her password or however they did it, but wasn't smart enough to actually argue against her successfully. i guess i shouldn't be surprised.
2001-09-04 04:03:52 PM
The ironic thing is that these young, alternative/hipster types are the people that started the whole gentrification of Wicker Park and Bucktown in the first place.

You're totally missing the boat here. Wicker park's gentrification is sponsered a lot more by yuppies than hipsters. When your apartment gets turned into a condo its the yuppies that move in and the hipsters that move out. I doubt any of those protesters live in the "New" Wicker Park, they're just waiting for their building to catch up, remodel, and kick them out.
2001-09-04 04:47:04 PM
MTV has every right to be there, I mean they rented the place and everything, and as long as people let them into their businesses with the cameras they have every right to do what they are doing. For people to be protesting that is stupid, it's kinda like you getting pissed at your asshole neighbor for moving in next to you, you may not like it, but that doesn't give you the right to get a bunch of people together and try and kick them out. As long as you're not affected or disturbed by it, then you really have no right to protest. Besides, their just giving the new real world press, and I can guarantee that at least one person who's heard about the protesters is gonna watch to see if they show any of it. So in a way, the protesters will actually get more people to watch the real world and support it.
2001-09-04 05:04:09 PM
Don't these people have better things to do with their time. Go save a whale or something. Jebus Harking X-Mas! Protesting 'The Real World.'

Common, lets go stand outside the National Academy of Science and protest 'gravity!' I've decided that this concept doesn't jive with my Ameri-centric, self-righteous, un-treasonable, quasi-plutarcarian, status quo-enabling dogma. Thus, ad homonym, it must be false and anyone trying to pass off such concepts deserves the violent, public humiliation that should come with their actions.
2001-09-04 06:00:05 PM
fark MTV, fark all these choreographed voyeuristic television programs, and screw all the losers whose own lives are so worthless that they have to live through their TV set. get a life!
these lame-ass networks deliberately pick the most neurotic, socially inept losers to star in their serieses just so they can capitalize on the fact that people's own lives are so devoid of meaning that they now rely on moronic televised arguments to get their jollies.
2001-09-04 06:35:12 PM
Who cares? Why does it matter? If you dont like them turn them off.

Oh and seriously find a better cause than worrying about TV shows for christ sakes. THere are people in jail for smokin a joint... I think that might need a little protesting too.
2001-09-04 06:37:22 PM
Fun, Fun, Fun in the fluffy chair!
2001-09-04 06:45:58 PM
Protesters = Gay
2001-09-04 06:49:52 PM
Now that's 3 references to Dead Kennedy's "MTV, get off the air". Pretty cool. =)
2001-09-04 06:51:44 PM
I'm sure all of the people associated with MTV are crying all over their six-figure paychecks because some people don't like them.

For every teenager that grows out of corporate pop in America, three fresh-faced suburbanite preteens take their place.
2001-09-04 06:52:13 PM
and we all know marijuana has never led to anything,

what an idiot
2001-09-04 09:19:54 PM
If you work for MTV you shold be chucked in jail.
2001-09-04 10:13:53 PM
Ashley, wash the futz out of your eyes so you can see clearly. Dispense with the propoganda. We all know thinking for ourselves once in a while has never led to anything either.
2001-09-05 10:23:50 AM
The neighborhood got progressivly whiter and upscale? Man, you'd better watch the truth police don't see that statement!
