It's late September, and I really should be back at school.

Only hundreds? What on earth could have happened? Even over a trailer park you're likely to cause real nuisances like needing to repair roofs...

I'm just imagining... "Oh dear god, there goes the Neon..." Or Kia. Past that, I can't think of anything worth less than a few thousand...

I just noticed: How can something be feared missing? It's there or not. If it's not, it's missing. If you don't know, it's missing until you find it. If you know, then you obviously don't fear. Odd, but I just noticed that.

They both exist and don't exist simultaneously until the Weather Channel is directly observed.

Matt Lauer was doing a brief phone interview with the mayor of the town on TV this morning. Matt asked him if there were any known fatalities, and the mayor said he wasn't sure, but figured there were some injuries.

Needless to say, once Lauer figured out there weren't bodies drapped all over the place he went on to the next story.

Phone lines at the Magee Police Department were busy.
That's wonderful reporting there. I'm glad you got that major news scoop.
Repoter: "I know! This village just had a big emergency event and people could be hurt, possibly a major catastrophe. I'll be nosy and tie up the emergency personnel by calling the police department repeatedly!"

blazemongr: "Possible tornadoes"? What's a possible tornado? Is it very different from a real one?

FTFA: Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said the agency never likes to say with certainty whether damage is the result of a tornado or straight-line winds until a full assessment can be made.

No, it's very different from an impossible tornado. But those never happen anyway so don't worry about it.

"It's not a shark until it swims up on the beach and bites a cop... until then it's a fish."

I think it's a similar thing with tornadoes. Until the weather service proves it's a tornado, it's just "wind". I'm a storm spotter for our local fire department. Several years back I radioed in a report of a confirmed tornado on the ground. I was about a half a mile from it, watching it. The dispatcher relayed the report to the weather service who replied "we don't see any rotation on radar... it's probably just a rain shaft". The dispatcher told me what they said and I replied, "well, this 'rain shaft' just leveled a 2-story farmhouse... and it's still on the ground moving northeast".

To be fair, we're at the far end of the radar coverage area for our weather service :)

therhinodep: Meh. It's such an unimportant area that Google hasn't even done a Streetview of it yet.

Fail. I can take a ribbing as good as anyone, but that area has been on Street View for quite a while now. Google is friggin' ubiquitous with their shiat though. Even the unincorporated areas have been covered. It makes you wonder just how long it took them, lol.

But I grew up about 10 minutes north of Magee, and much of my family is still in the area. (Simpson County Fark Party? Nah, I didn't think so either). Fortunately, I've already talked to the parents, so I know they're okay, but neither has had a chance to go out and assess the damage. My biggest concerns for now are for some extended family that stays in the area where the storm hit, but time will tell, right?

Still, best of luck to whoever got bent over by this storm. I'll be back in the area in 2 weeks, so I'll get to see the destruction with my own eyes then.

/Damn Mississippians shouldn't have built their homes right on the ocean!
//Even a blind man could've figured that out!

A tornado in a closed box? Sounds like a tempest in a teacup to me.

FTFA: However, she said regarding the Magee storm that she felt "very confident that that was a tornado."

"The signature on radar was unmistakable," Culin said.

Plus, you can look out a window and actually see if there's one in the neighborhood. Just sayin.

My folks and grandfolks always referred to the area between Magee and Mendenhall as "Tornado Alley."

A drive up Highway 49 was interesting - you could pick out old tornado tracks by noticing distinct areas where a line of trees were younger than the rest, or more recent tornado tracks by downed trees and stripped trees.

The most impressive track was 0.5 miles across.
