kronicfeld: poisonedpawn78: Sue the police department for 500 trillion dollars.

Sue them for what, legal eagle? If he ran a red light and was being detained, he hasn't a leg to stand on.

Its called publicity. Win the court of public opinion and outrage and you easily will have this cop fired and the next guy whos rushing to his dying mom will actually be let go...

You and I both know the law means nothing in the media.

You said, and I quote, "Plus he will probably win a large amount." So, again, what is he suing this cop for that he is going to "win" a civil suit?

Emotional distress. You can slap that on any suit... it doesn't really mean anything.

Look, we all know the bottom line is this: black dude, expensive car.
I'm guessing the wife is black too because the cop didn't shoot anybody.

abigsmurf: Remind me never to get sick in America if there are more nurses around like at your hospital. It's bad enough deliberately lowering the standard of care of someone because you're holding a grudge. It's worse that you're lowering their standard of care because you've a grudge against someone they don't know.

It's called a fair triage. The cop loses his get to the front of the line perk for being a dick. He now has to sit like everyone else.

I don't care for cops, but this is heavily slanted to make us all feel sorry for the guy.

He ran a stop light. In Texas you cannot run a stop light even if you have your hazards on.

The family didn't pull over with a siren blaring and lights flashing.

Maybe if they had complied immediately he would have been sympathetic.

They jumped out of the car and start yelling at the cop.

The cop has no way of knowing that this guy's mother in law was sick. People use ANY excuse to get out of a ticket, including saying someone is dying.

The investigation will probably find the cop did nothing out of procedure. And activists will protest.

You can't say fire the cop just because he's a jerk (or else 90% of cops would have to be fired).

And as someone who has dealt with many a Dallas cop, the black cops are generally bigger a-holes than the white cops. The Hispanic are usually the nicest/most reasonable. And that's not a "racist" staement because I said generally and not always!

2009-03-26 09:24:18 AM
I don't know if I missed it in the thread, but in Texas every time I've been in a vehicle that's been pulled over, the first words from the officer are invariably "Is there an emergency I should know about?" Sounds like this officer failed that particular part of the checklist.

feckingmorons: Cops should never piss of ER nurses, never ever. That is a very, very bad thing to do if you are a cop.

I've been both. I like being a nurse, not so much being a cop but I was younger and only did it for nine months.

Next time that cop has to take someone he arrested to the ER he will be there for quite a long time. The guy going to jail doesn't mind, but the cop does because he has to sit there the whole time, and when his shift ends he has to call his supervisor to find someone to remote book the person or some other cop to babysit the prisoner.

If the cop ever comes in as a patient and he is not on the verge of death he will have to sit in the lobby. Usually if a cop comes in for something minor like a human bite, or a laceration they are in and out quickly - because we are paying taxes to we don't want them sitting around we want them working. Not Officer dick to the nurses. He will wait even after the fat woman with the crotch that smells like baking bread from across the room has been seen and sent home. He will wait until after every lunatic, crack whore, geezer who talks to himself and drunk who has pissed his pants is seen and then he will wait another 20 minutes.

He will be pushed out of the nursing station and all of the chairs will suddenly be filled when he wants to sit down and work on his paper. He will have to stand at the bedisde of anyone he brings in. Nobody will let him cuff his guy to the bed and take a leak, because the staff can't accept responsibility for his prisoner. He can't go get a coke from the machine and nobody will have time to get him one. He can't borrow a pen because the staff will tell him they all have blood on them and they always wear gloves. He won't be able to use the copier or given any white out.

Cops are in the ER a lot with their jobs, pissing off a nurse is a very unwise move. I hope there is another hospital close to Plano because this guy royally farked himself. No, actually I hope all the above happens to him because he deserves it.

So you're saying that you're going to deny or delay medical care because you get butthurt?

Yeah, you're who I want working in our hospitals.

Idiot.

DALLAS - Rushing to see his dying mother-in-law at a Plano hospital, a NFL player found himself delayed by a Dallas officer after he was stopped in the hospital's ER parking lot.

With his wife and another woman in the car, Ryan Moats - a running back for the Houston Texans - sped his car towards the hospital on March 17. However, when he made it to the ER parking lot, they were stopped by Officer Robert Powell.

Dashcam video from the Dallas officer's patrol car captured the incident.

"Get in there," Officer Powell yelled out to Tamishia Moats, Ryan's wife, as she exited the car. "Let me see your hands. Get in there. Put your hands on the car."

"Excuse me, my mom is dying," Moats said.

Moats and the other woman ignored Officer Powell's commands and rushed inside the hospital to see her mother.

"I've got seconds before she's gone, man," Moats said to the officer.

Motes couldn't find his insurance paperwork and was desperate to leave.

"Listen, if I can't verify you have insurance...," Officer Powell said.

"My mother-in-law is dying," Moats interrupted.

"Listen to me," Officer Powell said.

"Right now," Moats said. "You're wasting my time."

"If you can't verify you have insurance, I'm going to tow your car," the officer said. "So, you either find it or I am going to tow the car."

As they argued, the officer got irritated.

"Shut your mouth," the officer said. "Shut your mouth. You can either settle down and cooperate or I can just take you to jail for running a red light."

The clash shocked Moats.

"For him to not even be sympathetic at all, and basically we're dogs or something and we don't matter, it basically shocked me," Moats said.

"I can screw you over," Officer Powell said. "I would rather not do that. You obviously will dictate everything that happens; and right now, your attitude sucks."

Twice, the hospital sent nurses to try and get the officer to let Moats go.

"We're blue coding her for the third time," the nurse said.

Even a Plano police officer stopped to make a plea for the officer to let Moats go.

"Hey, that's the nurse," the Plano officer said. "She says the mom is dying right now and she wants to know if I can get him up there."

After 20 minutes, the officer ticketed Moats for running a red light.

However, by the time Moats made it up to the ER, she had already passed.

"I went up after she passed and held her hand, but she was already gone," Moats said.

Dallas police have apologized, dropped the ticket and launched an investigation.

"When it came to our attention, we immediately called for an internal investigation to be done," said Lt. Andy Havey, Dallas Police Department.

That being said, I wonder how many times "My momma is dying" gets used as an excuse for speeding or running red lights.

Even if it's true, I wasn't aware of any exclusions granted to common law.

Even if he has heard the "My momma is dying" excuse a million times I doubt it was at the hospital with nurses begging for the person to come in because the mom was blue coding for the 3rd time.

RTFA. She saw her mother, he just didn't get to. There was no endangerment of anyones life or person which is the spirit of the law and if that is not broken then there should be no ticket.

Yeah, he did. He could have taken 2 minutes to go into the ER with the family. Or he could have listened to the nuse the first time. Or the second time. Or the officer from Plano.

I'm really surprised Moats didn't just take off for the ER door at any point after the officer made it clear he was going to be a dick - though he was probably thinking he'd get tazed/shot.

This is but one example that seems to be the result of the zero-tolerance,
one-size-fits-all policing that has been pushed over the past 20 years.

When I was but a wee lad, 3 to be exact, I fell on my head and fractured my skull.
I know, ha-ha, I got dropped on my head as a child.

At the time, my family lived near Va. Tech., and the nearest
hospital was in Blacksburg, about 30 miles away from our home.

I understand that my dad was driving in excess of 90mph to get to the hospital.

He was pulled over, explained the situation to the officer,
and we were given a police escort the rest of the way.

wmoonfox:

Care has nothing to do with it -- he was talking about going above and beyond the call of duty to make an officer's situation more bearable. Since that's not a requirement of any oath or expected from any job description, there really isn't a problem here. There's no "lower standard of care" involved with denying somebody the use of the copy machine, or refusing to get them a coke... they certainly aren't going to die sitting in a waiting room, in line to be treated for a minor injury like everyone else. Lack of preferential treatment does not equate to a lack of care.

Hey, thanks for your input. And, since I'm sure you're an ER nurse yourself and have an intimate understanding of triage, you can explain

How that passage is not a failure to treat. Do you even have any concept of how filthy a humans mouth is? In your expert medical opinion why don't you go ahead and explain how a yeast infection rates higher than a laceration or bite on the triage scale. So, we either have complete incompetence or malicious failure to treat.. Or maybe you have a better defense?

Actually if you read what I read, you would understand that cops get special treatment in the ER room. In other words they get the VIP treatment, they get in and out fast, what he's trying to say is, if you're that much of a dickhead cop, you're going to get treated like everyone else. You're going to wait wait and wait some more, you're going to understand the term 'Patient', and then you're going to write a novel about it while waiting. The moral of the story is, don't bite the hand that will one day feed you. If you're too dense to understand the underlying message, maybe you should apply to the Dallas Police department, they may have a position open sometime soon.

Bender The Offender: Hey, thanks for your input. And, since I'm sure you're an ER nurse yourself and have an intimate understanding of triage, you can explain

Obviously not, since only the input of an RN is accepted. Maybe I was too quick to judge on the similarity between the asshole-ish natures of cops and nurses... at least on your part.

I mean, only an RN could possibly understand the difference between emergency response and full treatment; only an ER nurse has ever been in a situation where somebody in the waiting room was bleeding all over the floor, only to be quickly bandaged in lieu of stitches, which were to come later; only somebody with your level of intellect and experience can relate to the experience of having a human/animal bite cleaned and covered, then sent back into the waiting room for another three hours.

Yeah, go eat a bowl of dicks, you self-righteous twat.

The cop should have tasered Moats. And the two nurses. And the Plano police officer. And fired his gun into the air just for good measure. This is Texas, after all.

Yeah because that shiat would NEVER happen any where else right?
Like cops have NEVER done anything dicklike in sophisticated places like LA and NY right?
/dumbass

Take that chip off your shoulder and put it back where it belongs.

I live in Texas, so I made fun of Texas. Big deal. I have learned some important things, though:

1. If I single out Texas, as in the example above, somebody will take offense because "that shiat happens other places too! Texas ain't special!" Well, you can be special too if you want.
2. If I mention any place other than Texas, somebody will notice that I'm in Texas and angrily point out that "that shiat happens in Texas too! Texas ain't special!" Goody. I'll make you an honorary Texan if you want.

Enough ranting. We now rejoin your regularly scheduled program, already in progress ;)

Reading the original post, I was imagining the Simpsons Texas guy shooting his guns in the air and saying "yee-haw" and I thought it was hilarious.

I've lived in Texas my whole life, and I think the stereotypical caricatures are hilarious. Come on people, learn to laugh at yourselves.

abigsmurf: Wonder what would've happened if he'd hit another car running that red light...

/just saying

But he didn't hit anyone. All we know is that he ran a red light. He might have stopped at the light waited for traffic to clear and then went through it. Or he could've been doing 90 and just flat out went through it. But since there was no high speed pursuit or mention of speeding by the officer, I'd guess it's closer to the first.

Ya know, Moats deserves a ticket. And from this video, I would suspect that he wouldn't really argue. However, all the officer needed to do was let them into the hospital. He can actually write the ticket without having Moats around. Moats doesn't actually need to sign it. There are plenty of ways that the cop could've still given the ticket (and raised needed revenue) without hindering Moats from entering the hospital.

So you're saying that you're going to deny or delay medical care because you get butthurt?

Yeah, you're who I want working in our hospitals.

Idiot.

It made perfect sense to me. I don't know, maybe some folks haven't had their coffee yet this morning and are a bit slow on the uptake?

You would've also thought that, with the number of times cops have to take someone to the ER, the cop in question would at least have a passing familiarity with the nurse staff... then again, he was a traffic cop. Sounds like the sane-cop might have, though, and maybe he had a larger stake in keeping good relations with the ER nurses too.

Speaking as a Texas Citizen and noting that it was a cop writing up an african American.....This guy is lucky he didnt just get farking shot, just for shiites and giggles. Texas Cops are the scariest angriest most psychotic group of law enforcement in earth history, they will tase your ass for doing whats expected, they will shoot you for having down syndrome.

This is not a troll, this is a farking warning.

The Doubting Apostle: Cops never get fired it seems. The only way they fire them is if they steal from the department.

You mean like this cop, who only got 20 days in jail (^) for stealing over $8,500 from the evidence locker?

nopokerface: That does suck. No one should miss the chance to watch their mother-in-law die.

...and out of the dust storm that is this thread, a diamond emerges.

Well done.

wmoonfox:
Yeah, go eat a bowl of dicks, you self-righteous twat.

You didn't hesitate to throw your ignorant opinion in when the assholes where conspiring to triage maliciously, now you want to cry and act like a retard when called on your ignorance? How about you keep your farking mouth shut when someone who knows a whole lot better than you what is and isn't considered malpractice calls the dicks out that are conspiring to commit it and you can avoid the little butthurt, profanity-laced temper-tantrums?

Let's review, shall we? You don't understand triage. You ran your farking mouth, acting like you did. I correct you and you got butthurt and responded like a pissed off 3 year old. Did I miss anything?
