"I have made it clear to our students that possession of Smarties (or similar candy) will result in a Class II offense," which usually means detention, the note said.

OH NO!!! Not a Class II offense. This principal sounds like a retard. Are the subjects of his little fiefdom required to wear uniforms and goosestep to class?

/CANDY??? IN MY SCHOOL???

I was so hoping they were smashing them and snorting them like coke.

Big deal, in other schools kids are doing actual drugs.

Wiseass? check
Attempting shock value with known audience (Parents/Teachers)? check
Something a clique of students are doing to be cool? check
And yet be different? check

Sounds like grade A teenage behavior here.

For the non-Americans, Smarties in the US = Rockets.

Jody Puryear, whose son Grant attends the school has the IQ of a god damned carrot, says smoking Smarties could be a gateway leading "to smoking cigarettes or pot or anything else like that."

Jeremy Froncek, 18, says smoking Smarties is a 'cultural phenomenon' and he likes it because 'it looks like you're smoking something but you're not.'

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. As a former smoker, I couldn't have given a fark how smoking "looked;" I did it because I enjoyed it. This kind of insecurity is why I hated high school and the farking idiots whom I went with.

GAT_00: I was so hoping they were smashing them and snorting them like coke.

There were kids in my middle school that would snort packets of kool aid. Gave you a sugar rush like you wouldn't believe.

I bet. I think I actually did the Smartie/coke trick one time, or the same thing with a Pixie stick. Burned like hell.

If we're going for absolute stupid, I actually got a friend of mine to willingly pour salt in his eye in 8th grade. He's a Marine now.

FTA: "Oren Friedman, a Mayo Clinic nose specialist, cautioned that frequent use could lead to infections or even worse, albeit rare, conditions, such as maggots that feed on sugary dust wedged inside the nose."

AAARRGH!

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the kids are doing this because it pisses off their parents.

2009-03-21 12:12:39 AM
If you want to see the future leaders of America go to YouTube and type in Smoking Smarties to see the coolest kids on the internets.

I had never even heard of this until today.

GAT_00: I was so hoping they were smashing them and snorting them like coke.

That is what kids in my school used to do.

Seriously, that and huff white out. Was the "rage" in middle school/junior high.

They are all dumb now, just like they were then.

This whole "new drug" thing isn't new to me. It just must have finally gotten out from the West Coast, if nowhere else.

Kids today and their new-fangled fads. Back in my day we smoked dried banana peel.

2009-03-21 12:17:22 AM
they do know that no one actually "smokes" them right? They basically suck the dust in and blow it out.

So stupid.

GAT_00: I was so hoping they were smashing them and snorting them like coke.

FTFA: The fad at Summit Middle School died down after a few days and some harsh words from the lunchroom staff. But at other schools and across the Internet, "smoking Smarties," as the activity has been labeled, is gaining popularity. Some children have even taken to snorting it, all to the horror of parents, teachers and the 60-year-old company that manufactures the candy.

Beeyoutiful.

Down here they snort Lucas Limon Salt and Lucas candy on dares all the time. I can understand that a little bit, mostly for the macho factor.

I've never heard of anyone rolling it and "smoking" it. That's just stupid.

I had a friend some years ago, with whom I'd have the most wide-reaching and intelligent conversations. Until we drank. For some reason both of us thought that squirting lemon juice and Tabasco in our eyes was funny. It was part of shot (take shot, dumb mixture in eye). Farking batshiat retarded.

Would probably do it again.

When I was kid, the neighborhood wastrels (myself included) went through a weird flavored-snuff phase.

What a Victorian way to act out. I'm suprised we didn't start powdering our wigs and repressing our folks.

2009-03-21 12:50:57 AM
I used to crush up a bunch of them in a can and shake the can really hard to create a dust cloud of em and inhale through both mouth and nose... Tasted awesome.

When I was a kid, we even had candy cigarettes. I remember two kinds, one was a hard candy that was a white stick with a red tip, the other was bubble gum with some kind of powder on it, wrapped in paper, and when you put one end in your mouth and blew, the powdery stuff would fly out the end like smoke. Big whoop.

OMG!!!

Liquidate them all and start over! They are ruined forever.

When will our long national nightmare end?

2009-03-21 03:16:20 AM
We used to do this when I was like 8 or 9 years old with smarties and pixie sticks. We even had the candy cigs that would look like a cloud of smoke when you blew through them. Talk about over reacting. This is just a bunch of kids that found out that they can create a powder cloud. Once we did dare somebody to snort one. He spent about 20 minutes sneezing, coughing, eyes watering and slobbering. Needless to say I didn't try it.

GAT_00: Burned like hell.

I did that too but I don't recall it burning too bad.

ottosmom: some kind of powder on it

that would be either corn starch or powdered sugar, if I remember right and I can't remember which.

The true idiots are the adults that are actually shocked and concerned by this. When I was a kid the ice cream truck sold candy cigarettes and no one gave a shiat.

at least they aren't smoking dope

/btw anyone selling?

Mr. Froncek calls smoking Smarties a "cultural phenomenon" and says he likes it because "it looks like you're smoking something but you're not."

While he's working on a perfect exhale, he won't try blowing the powder out his nose. "That's pretty hard core," he says. "That's like going to a whole other level."

Smarties: The New Gateway Drug

2009-03-21 06:55:56 AM
ottosmom: When I was a kid, we even had candy cigarettes.

You can still get them. My wife and I give them out for Halloween.

When I was in junior high school, we smoked real cigarettes, used real drugs, and had real clumsy, inexperienced sex. I'd tell you more about it, but I'd really prefer it if you just got the fark off my lawn.

I was going to write that I prefer M&Ms. Then I got confused about the talk about crunching them up up and making powder.
A quick trip to wikipedia solved that.

Now, now, there's no need to go off insulting carrots like that.

2009-03-21 07:09:08 AM
A friend of mine did something similar back in high school, he decided to snort a line of powdered altoids. Obviously he started screaming his head off afterwards, all I did was laugh, and the teacher just shook his head in disgust.

GAT_00: I was so hoping they were smashing them and snorting them like coke.

I remember a kid doing this with Bottlecaps in high school like 20 years ago. Got caught and we had to endure two days of lectures about the lining of the nose and how important it was to the overall health of the body. And we couldn't buy bottlecaps in the cafeteria anymore.

smarties? how the fark do you smoke smarties?

Do you smoke the red ones last?

Where i come from the candies they are smoking are called rockets. And kids didnt smoke them for show. We crushed them and snorted them.

2009-03-21 07:23:19 AM
I also remember the red-tipped minty and bubblegum candy cigarettes. I really liked the mint ones. They tasted pretty good and lasted for awhile if you didn't chew 'em up. The bubblegum ones, though you could blow "smoke" out of them, weren't that great. Not too long ago i actually saw the mint ones at a dollar store and bought a pack for old time's sake.

/ yep, I ended up smoking the real McCoy, and other things. No, I don't think those had any influence, more like my peers, poverty and general red-neckism influenced me.

Yeah, they don't sell those kinds of Smarties in the US. They don't sell Kinder Surprises either (unless you're in a European specialty store.) Anyway we're left with chalky, pressed sugar tablets that taste like crap. No wonder kids are smoking them instead of eating them.

2009-03-21 07:40:37 AM
I did Smarties so often I got Maggots. And then I gave it to my girlfriend so now she has Maggots too.

Just remember kids, if you're caught with Smarties they can take away your college financial aid.

2009-03-21 07:47:15 AM
Something tells me these kids would bowl somewhere near a 129 if they put down their smarties and tried.

2009-03-21 07:57:06 AM
I may have to teach my kids this trick. We get so damned many of those stupid rolls at every friggin holiday, birthday party, doctor visit, etc. They taste like shiate, so the kids won't eat them. We usually throw them away, but this might be fun.
