I thought it was totally awesome and I wish people would stop complaining about it. It's not like he got up in the other team's grill and began thumbing his nose at them. Yeah, you can talk about honour, respect and dignity, but come on. Let the man have his moment.

I can absolutely see where people are coming from in that they don't want this to turn into a regular thing...but I have ZERO problem with people pulling stuff on milestone moments. It's about doing it when you've done something momentous...and how many other hockey players have has 3 consecutive 50-goal seasons in the last decade? I don't think anyone's done it since mid-90's Selanne.

Here's a thought..let's ask all the other 50-goal scorers this season what they think of this. If anyone else who's scored 50 so far this year has a problem with it, AO should apologize.

Not that I disagree with what you're saying, but Ovie has had at least 50 goals in three of his four seasons. Big Ovechkin fan myself, I love the way he plays the game along with the theatrics. Wishes he didn't sign his contract so that there would be hope of the Bruins or Canucks signing him, but good for Washington.

There is a difference between a player having fun and celebrating and a player showing up the opposition while celebrating. IMO Ovie was having fun celebrating his third 50 goal season.

Yeah, but some people don't like him so they act like nobody has ever celebrated a goal before let alone their 50th goal.

You don't wear a helmet when you play goalie, do you. You've got 4 from the Shootout era (Avery, Ovechkin, Malik, Hejduk), one of which doesn't do this at all otherwise, since he doesn't score all that often (Malik, 33 goals in 691 games, which is part of why that goal was so highlight ready). You've got Theo Fleury celebrating, as a Calgary Flame... in EDMONTON... Wayne Gretzky after he becomes the all time leading NHL scorer, Tiger Williams scoring one one of the few shifts he might not end up in the penalty box, a rookie Teemu Selane in Winnipeg during the year he set the rookie record with 76 goals, and then a European team.

I stand by my earlier comment. And I've got my shiny hard elbow pads on, though I'm not sure you'd feel it through that thick skull of yours. Leafs fan?

You don't get much showing off in hockey after a goal is scored. A fist in the air, or arms raised, a gathering of the on-ice players, coming together in solidarity to, erm, hug the guy who scored, maybe a bit more depending on the emotion going through the game. You definitely don't get little dances that appear choreographed, no matter what the goal signifies. This isn't the NFL, where it's so common it has rules around it now. It's not European soccer, where you have to do a lap of the pitch, pull your shirt up over your head and then skid on your knees from the 18yrd box to half, or else you get a yellow card. It's not even close to the NBA, or MLB.

So yeah. This is getting people riled up. Just like the touchdown dances got people riled up in the NFL what, 15 years ago? 20 years ago?

I'm conflicted here. I like seeing a superstar player who has loads of personality (unlike many of his Russian comrades) and clearly doesn't give a shiat about what anyone thinks about it. But if he did that against my team, I'd want him embedded into the boards the very next shift.* Considering Tampa's coach is Rick 'The Gambler' Tocchet, I'd expect that to happen in their next game. Thankfully, I have NHL Gamecenter to see that happen.

*considering the goal he scored a couple of years ago against my team, he'd have a right to do that stunt.

50 goals? Big deal. I don't remember Gretzky going all "TO" when he scored 52 goals... with 163 assists. Or how about the time he had 50 goals... on Dec. 30, enroute to 92 goals, with 120 assists to boot. Players hit the 50 goal mark every season. He's got 6 more seasons of 50 goals a year before I'll even be a little impressed. Or he can win a few championships. All the goals scored in the entire world don't mean a thing if your division rivals are hoisting the cup at the end of the season.

Techhell: /Get off my rink.

And then you have AO after his 50th goal. AO's celebration wasn't even that elaborate. You'd think he actually started a bonfire behind the rink the way some were outraged. Face the facts, old school, some people just don't like the guy so they'll cut him down.

I'm not equating Ovie with Gretzky, but it's juuuuust a tad harder to score 50 now than it was back then. Check back at how many guys have score 50 recently. I'll give you a hint: not many.

The guy is the best thing in hockey right now.

Setting a career record is very different from repeating something that has been done 184 times before this season. Brodeur deserves all the celebration he wants for his achievements.

He'll also say that the net cutting is just peachy during coach's corner because Brodeur is Canadian.

It isn't "my thing". It's a sidenote on every hockey site I have looked at. Brodeur going for 553 has more webspace than Ovechkin scoring 50 goals. He might not even win and people that know hockey are talking more about that than 50 goals.

Unless you meant "look like an egotistical ass on the ice". Nobody else really does that right now, so you are correct.

I'm just pointing out that 50 goals isn't a big deal. It's barely half of the record, and it's barely half of the number of people that have done it. Sure, it's a single-season milestone, but so is making the play-offs, and in the end it doesn't mean a thing unless you win the cup.

You guys are making it out to be the best thing ever, it isn't even front page news. At NHL.com. Or NHL[nospam-﹫-backwards]NPSE*com. I am certain I'll have to go to the 6th or 7th page of the sports section to find it in the paper.

Whatever. Go Caps! Win another early out in the playoffs! Score a bunch more goals that don't mean a thing as another team wins the cup! I hope they win the cup so I can hear how it wouldn't have been possible without boy-wonder, because it wouldn't be. They suck outside of him. They have 2 20 goal scorers besides him, and he almost leads the team in assists too. Not to mention the he leads the league for forwards in ice time.

OV is fast and strong, not easy to get to him, even if you do he's going to take it. Try anything else you'll take a penalty and he'll pot one on the PP.

I like Ovechkin as much as the next guy and I think his usual celebration of jumping into the boards us pretty cool and brings excitement to the game, but this celebration was just lame. Even his teamates didn't want anything to do with it.

He should have taken a beating on his next shift. If you're the opposing team, you have no other option than to take him out.

I dunno. OV has less points despite playing with much better line mates (until recently) in a weaker division, not to mention taking over twice as many shots on net.

They are both amazing but they are different types of players, and the most knowledgeable hockey people (NHL GMs) would take Sid over OV as a first pick.

As a fan, ha ha, its funny. Good for him, would have maybe saved it for 60 goals, as I feel 60 goals is the new 50. Not as bad as Avery's pushups, and a little less lame than Selanne's glove. Also much better than Ziggy Palffy & Travis Green's kiss.

But as a Tampa Bay player, I would have come over and beat fire out of him. Especially in my arena. You think people in Tampa care AO just lit up their team for his 50th? It's a great big middle finger. Ryan Malone's comments said it all. He'll get his later. Thing is, AO never gets crumpled anywhere. He's one slipppery mofo. Therefore, he can pull celebration stunts like this and not really worry about retaliation. And if he does, Brashear will step on the ice to get knocked out for him.

Long story short, this type of behavior usually comes around to bite you in the ass in hockey, and most hockey players know that (Mike Green did). Rest assured when AO is some old geezer, he'll get his nose rubbed in it by someone better than him.

2009-03-21 02:54:35 PM
That's one of the most appalling celebrations I've ever seen in the NHL. Get excited, raise you stick up and celebrate with your teammates. Don't do crap like this. Ovechkin better realize he has a bounty on his head now if he does this again. This isn't Euro soccer where a bunch of prettyboys dance around every time they score a goal. Act like you've been there before and nobody will ever have any reason to criticize you.
