(Some Guy)   When the government gives you condoms to protect you from AIDS, don't use the lubricants for your hair and beauty regime, nor should you cut them up and use them as fishing lures. "If they're fishing, they're not f**king."   (watoday.com.au) divider line 43

AIDS is a very low risk if you're not in sleeping with someone in one of these 6 groups (new window). Graph breaks out the DC AIDS numbers by race and transmission vector it is safe for work, but site name might not be. Good book incidentally.

Is it really wise to spend much effort boosting condom usage to prevent AIDS amongst the population that has exceedingly low AIDS incidence?

They're probably working on the logic of nipping it in the bud. I mean, if you wait around and it becomes a pandemic a la Africa, you're going to look mighty dumb for not investing in a few million dollars of condoms and education ten years earlier.

Well, someone's a racist. How about instead of stereotyping, let's focus on trying to solve this problem?

THIS. Imagine if Carter had been President to fully fund AIDS vaccines, instead of Reagan and his "let them die" attitude.

How is it racist if one refuses to have relationships with white women that have gone black because of the much greater STDS exposure risk? You're still only discriminating against white women.

In parts of South Africa, efforts to make ARVs (AIDS meds) freely available have been thwarted by the fact that some of them are hallucinogenic when smoked.

How does some being misused stop us from keeping Big Pharma from their next generation of dependent users? Even if they are all thrown away, the fact that Big Pharma suffers should be enough reason to do it.

I fail to see how statistics, in this case, can be racist. In order to get a meaningful analysis out of data, one needs to specify different categories to place the test subjects in.

Without sufficient and meaningful data, it is impossible to "[try] to solve this problem." Outreach efforts for white, female IV drug users would likely not have a major effect on HIV/AIDS in DC, but outreach efforts targeted to black, gay males just might help.

The Pope called this one. Condoms are not miracles people. Personal responsibility is the way to be safe. Keeping it in your pants is the safest way. We never had these problems when most of the population realized that there were things that you just did not do. Ever figure out why most responsible people didn't do them. Because there were prices that you paid.

Remove all Republicans: You are discriminating on the basis of race. That's racist.

The two are not equivalent. "racist" implies discrimination on the basis that one race is superior to others. discrimination on empirical factors is not the same thing. Otherwise, picking a group of "people most likely to have sickle-cell anemia" would be racist.

Pointing out that there is a statistical probability of something being true about some race or ethnicity isn't racist. It's Math.

nelsonal: Is it really wise to spend much effort boosting condom usage to prevent AIDS amongst the population that has exceedingly low AIDS incidence?

Yes, because those are the people still need to know to not have promiscuous sex.

And as for the whole race debate going on, the race issue for the most part is a distraction. The AIDS problem is two-fold. First is poverty, which breaks up families and studies show children in poverty are far more likely to be sexually abused and these factors lead to more promiscuous behavior. The second problem is the treatment of gays by many religious and government institutions. Instead of being encouraged to have safe sex and finding long lasting relationships, these organizations force gay people underground where they have promiscuous sex because they can't get it any other way. The black churches are probably one of the biggest offenders in this respect, but there are many white churches that aren't helping the problem.

1234567...

It would be interesting to see these same statistics grouped by poverty level rather than by race. My guess is that the AIDS numbers do follow poverty closer than race.

I don't know that AIDS is particularly of a threat to any one race over another. (I haven't downloaded my genetics degree from the University of Phoenix yet.) But if a particular race is more susceptible to a given disease I do not feel it racist to point it out and develop effort to address the situation. If any thing it is the opposite. It is applied compassion. Focusing your efforts whey they will do the most good - REGARDLESS of race.

Racism would be to know the susceptibility exist and then to do nothing about it.

I don't see anything wrong about this. If they so impoverished that condoms are more useful as fishing lures, it is still probably helpful, and presumably while they are fishing they are also not getting AIDs. You can't blame an NGO based on what the people they're helping are doing with the help.

It's your choice to do the analysis. It's like claiming that Social Security takes money from black men to give to white women solely on the basis of their life expectancies. It's just wrong and it's clear what your intention is when you examine people by race or by gender.
